  1. UG's are very underrated, try linking the unlift tube from an undergravel to a canister for ultimate effect. btw im running 70 odd tanks on UG filters atm, most would be called overstocked, no problems. agree with planting problems, but then again some plants like the flow past their roots. many people pass over old fashioned ideas but I can easily set up and run a tank for less than $30 (stock not included) and have no problems
  2. should be able to scrape the outside of the stone, they don't often block on the inside (although it does happen RARELY) also had a few faulty new stones recently. people!! Blow through your airstone before leaving the store!!!!!
  3. pH is not too much of an issue as long as it doesnt reach extremes. sounds like the filter hasn't aged properly. even water changes shouldn't be an issue unless nitrate it topping 30-40ppm if ammonia is the cause keep up water changes and IME add some live bacteria, try TLC super pond treatement (the owner is gonna hate me for recomending it) but adding 50ml should remove all of your ammonia withing 12-24 hours
  4. hrmmm...... I thought this was a german thing oh well go kiwis!!!! this is the sort of topic that gets people banned
  5. :sml1: also we can't control the spread of the worst exotic species. humans
  6. parameters?? sounds like ammonia damage to the gills to me
  7. laguna's are good if you can get them (fixed up a 15yr old one with the original impeller only a bit of gunk in it!!) but make sure you can easily get parts for them as well just in case, Aquaone are a good brand (65% worldwide marketshare last I heard) a bit pricey but reliable and easy to get parts for. or the marathons are good too, german build, good quality, hard to get parts (dunnno if they still make them)
  8. once it hits the caudal peduncle (the fleshy bit at the base of the fin) it tends to not grow back. im sorry but it would be better to knock it on the head. it is commonly caused in barbs by a small bite to the caudal peduncle just in front of the fins, sometimes it will heal but to be honest chances are very slim. if you want to have a go though, try treating with methylene blue at a concentration that makes the back of the tank hard to see, and make sure you remove any carbon from your filter first.
  9. hrmmmm.... will have to look aroud, seem to be a few around if animates have them. last lot looked like they might have the gene, but would love some really nice ones for the display tank
  10. definately invest in a good heater, especially with a small tank. undergravels work really well with puffers especially with cone snails inhabiting it. HOB's are very good too. lighting if you can get a good 15000K they rock, make your fish shine, well the reder ones anyways., unless your trying for a planted tank then don't worry too much, one in a more yellow spectrum might make the puffer colours show better
  11. see page 1 of this thread, easy to tell
  12. the air curtain design should put out mirco bubbles, also the flexible airstones (when clean) do a very fine bubble, and the ceramic variety claim 1-2mm bubbles smaller bubbles also move slower increasing contact time. btw airstones can be cleaned easily by boiling for a few seconds.
  13. I see why you bought it, it seems to follow the same rules as fish keeping
  14. would love to, but not enough time or money to do it
  15. so in general, your lucky bamboo might turn yellow for a number of reasons or absolutely no reason, and that they like rich/poor wet/dry soil and lot/little light and warm/cold temperatures is it called lucky because if you get it right your damn lucky???
  16. at the moment he is more of a Krueger
  17. F15hguy

    is this real???

they are there, but if you see them your either searching or lucky. for some reason most people don't know they exist. plus their really tiny, less than 1cm would make a better pet than an ant farm
  18. see them in retail stores for around $45-65, put a bit of growth on it.....still nowhere near $130
  19. gas exchange does occur within the bubbles, but the surface of the tank far exceeds the bubbles for the gas exchange due to the fact the air is also constantly refreshing itself, that is why you get almost the same amount of as exchange from a powerhead breaking the surface than as from an airstone. if gas exchange did not occur in the bubbles then the CO2 systems would have a bit of trouble
  20. ooooh, you have to be german
  21. that would have to be looked into....., might suit parrot cichlids though
  22. ooooh, in a big tank you could use a toilet!!!!! now your thinking.
  23. or damn I soooo am going to build one, now where did I leave that spare tank......
