  1. Great, I think I'll get it next pay day then! Thanks guys! :happy2:
  2. Hi guys, I'm looking at adding an additional filter onto my AR850 (already has the built in wet/dry filter). Not looking to spend too much money (under $100) since its only for back up filtration. Would this be any good? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pets-animals/Fish/Pumps-filters/auction-392893013.htm Or is it worth the extra to splash out and get this? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pets-animals/Fish/Pumps-filters/auction-393297814.htm Do they come with all the attachments you need etc.? I haven't had a canister filter before so any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
  3. Wow he is big I hope he gets better. My fighter looked like that about a week ago and I got really worried. Turned out all that had happened was one of my guppies had dropped her fry overnight and he'd had a bit of a midnight feast
  4. An angel would quickly outgrow your 40L If I could fit more into this tank I'd have heaps lol Moved the guppies upstairs to my brothers new tank just before the pic was taken, they were only temporary anyway If the angels do start nipping it'll just give me an excuse to set up another mini-version for the fighter
  5. Well I certainly have enough noobish excitement to share
  6. Thanks Everyone! All the plants were given to me for free by some lovely members on here. Yeap, I've got 2 young angels (which I've trained to eat from my hand) and a young veil tail betta in there. They have heaps of room and are being raised with eachother so are getting along great! :happy2:
  7. I know I post WAY too much for someone so new, but I just couldn't resist sharing these photos! Here's how my tank has progressed over 30 days. Each pic taken only THREE days after the previous one :spop:
  8. Maybe someone with more experience keeping them can give you some more info, but from what I've learnt during my animal science cert at uni they can be more sensitive to poor water quality, fluctuating temps etc. Particularly in ponds :dunno:
  9. Ohhh those white clouds do look cool, but mums really keen on goldfish.. of all the fish out there  Algae would be a massive problem but to be honest I kinda like the look of green rocks so would just have to give the glass a clean before waterchanges :nilly: I want a pet cow
  10. I have a terrible case of MTS! I'm eyeing up the bay window in the kitchen as a place to put a minimalist hardscaped 3ft with a couple of fantail goldfish :spop:
  11. I love the blue ones too!! So tempted to set up a coldwater tank of my own! Careful with the fantail goldfish though, they are much more sensitive than commets etc, but as long as you keep up good water quality they'll be fine  I tried silica sand a couple of months ago ang got rid of it within a couple of weeks. It went all brown and clumped together like it was caramelised  If you want light substrate maybe try a white or light grey gravel? This would look amazing http://www.hollywoodfishfarm.co.nz/detail/view/glacier-4-6mm-25kg-sack/m/1123/ :happy1:
  12. I've been home full time doing pretty much nothing since March with my busted wrist and I'm going stirr crazy :nilly: Post op with surgeon on Tuesday so fingers crossed for some good news! Bedroom is also turning into a small scale fish room  Was brainstorming last night about bringing in a 4th and 5th tank :cofn:
  13. I'm not sure, I've never kept them myself but I can't think of any problems. (Edit: Just had a google and it looks like they'll be fine!) Maybe ask a mod to move this to the freshwater section so more people can see it
  14. Lovely fins!! I'm not sure how big they get, but a small school of 4 or so glass catfish could be very interesting additions to a classroom tank
  15. Like tanks, if you have live plants you'll probably get them whether you want them or not
  16. It probably would be, but not for babies. You can get a 2ft for about $40 new, less second hand
  17. A 64L plain glass tank should only cost you about $40 You should take a drive out to Hollywood Fish Farm, much cheaper than animates and they have so much variety! Well worth the drive!
  18. Just finished setting up my brothers first tank :happy2: Here's hoping he becomes addicted too, then we can have more tanks over the house  Also recieved my package from HFF. Brought my first test kit and its super fun to use! I feel like I should be wearing goggles and a white lab coat while checking my ammonia levels (all of which were perfect zeros) :smln:
  19. Fair enough, I'd be the same, I get very attached to my fish  You should keep an eye out for an Aqua One AR380 on trademe, it would make a great little tank for some minnows and you can get them second hand for around $80 They're 34L and include a light and filter too. I have 2 that I use for guppies. Great little tanks!
  20. If you wanted to move to tropicals you could alwaays sell the minnows in the private trade & exchange or animates might exchange them for store credit
  21. My guppy breeding set up is a 2ft tank filled with this stuff http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pets-animals/Fish/Decorations/auction-392130152.htm you can also use java moss. Stick in a heater set to 28 degrees, an aqua one clearview 300 hang on filter (with a bit of filterwool covering the intake) and about 1M and 3F and they will multipy in no time  Feed powdered flakes for the fry with a few larger flakes for the adults. Thats the easiest, cheapest option in my opinion. You can use a smaller tank but a 2ft gives plenty of room for the fry to grow out EDIT: I found with only 4 fish in the 2ft it sort of cycles itself quite quickly with no issues as long as you do a 20% water change every 3 or so days. Also a bare bottom tank is easier to clean for a breeding tank
  22. If you raised the temp maybe one degree a day I think the guppies would be fine. The minnows you may have to rehome though.
  23. I like that idea  I'm sure he has some boys toys, you should be allowed some toys too so go for it! :happy2:
  24. I'd say expensive ones are usually going to be better. Having said that, I have a really cheap trademe lighthood on my 2ft and the plants are thriving as well as in my tank with expensive lighting :happy2:
