  1. A sheet of glass shouldn't be too expensive it may be cheaper and faster to replace the sheet yourself if you are game enough. I only say that as a new tank will be soo expensive.

    Ammonia

Err, no idea what that is or how much, will the folks at wet pets know what I am asking for? It is a 200L, just sitting in my garage doing a fishless cycle with little ammonia in it I will give you a PM and discuss tomorrow or something. may bring tim tams and nick of with some plants.

    Ammonia

haha man I am glad somebody explained that, I could just imagine the look on his face when I turned up expecting masses of water. I think I will pass on the tim tams but I do have a cheese burger wrapper that still has some sauce and a bit of cheese on it? On another note, I would put some fish in it but I have no idea what I want to put in it. Can we get piranhas in NZ??? I can just put some goldies in it and then change it to tropical after ? All my time has gone into building the damn thing and the cabinet I haven't had a chance to think about what to put in it. Was kind of hoping to do the fishless cycle ( hence ammonia ) while I decide. Although I am sure by the time I want to put fish in it it will be too small. @josh: good advice, although my 50L is in a never ending cycle so I don't think that would help in my case.

Mighty nice of you Phoenix. Out of interest, how much water we talking? Just so I can find a solution for transporting water other than 50 pump bottles

    Ammonia

@ Sam: Yep tried there, they only have cloudy ammonia (home brand ) which doesn't have its ingredients but it bubbles up a lot when you shake it and I heard that means it has the cleaning chemicals in it which I understand are bad? I have tried a few bulk places, Mitre 10 Mega, bunnings ect but to no avail, just wondered if any of the locals had a secret supply store. @Ryan: My tank is 200L

    G'day!

    hey, welcome aboard.
  16. Anyone in Palmy/Manawatu region know where I can get Ammonia to cycle my tank? I can't find it anywhere. thanks
  17. Ha I had to go and double check  home brand "woolworths" Cat litter is 100% Zeolite about $3.00 for 6 litres ( no idea why it is measured in litres ) roughly 1 - 2 kgs If it reduces the hardness It wont help me much. And if it removes calcium and magnesium I don't see it being great for a substrate. I will see if I can find any other info before I go shoving it in my tanks. 8)
  18. Thanks for the feedback. I like the general consensus not to use the carbon as I am a bit of a tight a$$ The write up on the seachem purigen makes it sound unreal. Might have a look at it just for future reference. I also read today that you can use zeolite (which is used as kitty litter  ) as a substrate and as carbon alternative. I need more tanks so I can test all these things. Thanks for the input guys.
  19. @ Josh: I was aiming at what sort of media, I know there are more than just bio balls ect, I wondered what some of you used in place of carbon. @ Ryan: Thanks.
  20. wouldn't it then remove chlorine from the water? No arguments from me I am more than happy to leave it out, only thing is that leaves me with an empty tray in my filter. I have bio balls and the ceramic ring thingys will I get any advantage of putting something in the middle tray. Note: all trays have a layer of sponge.
  21. I have read that carbon needs to be changed constantly, does anybody know of any alternatives. I have no idea of the price of activated carbon but I guessing it is not cheap.
