  1. I was wondering if higher nitrates could have an effect on the blue, as it seems quite common for them to get at least some blue when in home aquaria. I saw mine today and she still has the sore
  2. Got the torch out and had a look for her, and she is still quite blue. She has a score on her carapace before the molt, it will be interesting to see if it is still there - the only problem is she is nearly never out while the lights are on
  3. Hi and welcome As Mark said water changes - I would try 30% every day or two to keep the ammonia down, or ask on here is someone local to you can give you some filter washings ie they wash some of the bacteria off their media and you dump that into your aquarium...
  4. She has stayed quite blue for the last several molts, just did another moult yesterday and I haven't seen her yet to see what colour she is atm
  5. Could you set up a timer and relay, or even a raspberry pi and a relay controller to 'press' the sunrise/sunset buttons? EDIT: I see that it is a remote control unit, could probably still use a pi to run the internal control?
  6. Nice bit of wood The only Sulphur Point I knew was the one in TGA
  7. Impressive numbers. I have only really spotted one coastal stream with giants and saw about 10 in ~100m, and only managed to catch one of them. Well done.
  8. two vids for you: http://youtu.be/cFUbo3eWw0U and http://youtu.be/ahLUjYG0zjM. Smelt in spawning mode?
  9. are you worried about the tannin? the sulphur? or the shipping waste? I wouldn't worry about the first two and a good scrub should help with the last...
  10. I didn't see this when posted but I'll reply now for reference. for ease of use 1ppt = 1g of salt per liter of water I have had a goldfish in a tank with ich. I treated with both 3 or 6 ppt rock salt (3 or 6g per L). You don't need to raise the temp for goldfish and I would think that if you brought it up to the temps needed to halt ich it would also kill the goldfish. If you keep the temp at room temp them you will have to keep the treatment up for about 3 weeks, this will be a week or so after the last spots. Mix up the rock salt in a 2 or 3 L bottle with hot water and slowly add this to the tank over a day. Keep up water changes, and only replace the salt that has been removed ie if you remove 50 L of water them you will need to add back another 150g salt if you are treating at 3ppt or 300g of salt at 6ppt. at the end of the treatment just keep up you water changes and the salt will slowly exit the system. Most fish will cope with 3 ppt of salt, hardy fish can cope with 6 or more ppt. Cories, cats, pleco? are much less tolerant of salt and I believe that the mac for these species is only 1ppt.
  11. once torrentfish get used to manna from heaven they will swim up the water column to grab food. I think that they would be easier to adapt by themselves or with another acclimatized torrentfish or maybe a a single bully. Mine started taking beef quite fast and granules soon after.
  12. I guess they will eat worms, but none of the ones I feed ever make anywhere near the bottom. Beef heart's not too fatty if you trim it (and I suspect that it's a lot less fatty than US beef). I feed beef heart, shrimp/prawn, mealworms, earthworms, waxmoth (very fatty), pond life, commercial granules, etc for all my natives
  13. One of my commons (found 160km or over 200km inland, not sure what site it came from but probably the first) has a fin-ray count that could suggest a giant.
  14. Stella, by wave maker we mean flow pumps, high flow with low presure. they don't put much heat back into the system - the one that I have to hand is 5000 l/h at 12w My torries are such aggressive feeders now I just about have to make sure the bullies are getting their share :fshi: I'll have to find it... no riffle tank in the index, I give up... Then when I do find the page you don't mention turnover :cofn: The riffle tank I had was doing about 50 - 70 x turnover per hour, 3200 or 3500 l/h external pump on a 50 l tank.
  15. torries are neat :f77: I have 3 adults in my native tank and the more or less ignore the bullies. There are two wave makers in this tank, a 5000 and a 5000-15000 l/h. The othere way to do it would be like the riffle tank I had set up for a while: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=59465
  16. I'm sure I read .2g in wellington CBD

  18. There's something about Mary... :digH:
  19. seen a similar article, head pores can be used to tell the different populations within the same community.
  20. and remember that basically you cant bring any thing that 'has been wet'. eg plants, fish, fish foods, used aquarium things etc...
  21. Got those two when I went in to the LFS and asked if they had kuhli loaches in stock. Unfortunately the smaller one died after about a week or two, I think it got damaged when being caught as they were in a tank with deep substrate and it took ages to catch one of them as it kept disappearing into the substrate. I think I'll order a few more as they are cool even if you only ever see a nose sticking out of the substrate.
  22. I like how the ticker on the TV says Wellington Quake... unless they mean this little 4.0 http://www.geonet.org.nz/quakes/2013p543901 <- edit well one map places that quake in the harbour, but the page for it places it 45 km south-east of Seddon. I now don't know if I should believe any thing geonet say...
  23. http://www.geonet.org.nz/quakes/region/newzealand/2013p543121 4.9 Edit I missed this one in the list http://www.geonet.org.nz/quakes/region/newzealand/2013p543121 reviewed to 5.8 at 7:17:10 am
