  1. just pulls water from the bottom of the tank into the overflow box where it drains via a beananimal overflow? Sort of make sense to me anyway
  2. Cool as man You may find that aeration over summer will be a big help
  3. There will be shrimp in the waikato in Hamilton, I have seen them in streams that flow into the Waipa at Pirongia, but I have always found better numbers nearer the coast - as per the link LA gave I've had them survive in tanks for over a year at 24deg. They always get eaten in the native tank at temps that they normally live at (native tank is at 14 in winter and 18 in summer)
  4. They are called freshwater shrimp for a reason :bggrn: Try any of the streams that drain into either the harbor or directly into the sea, looks for places with lots of plants in the stream and drag the net through them, good luck. binu, they do ok at 24 if there is plenty of dissolved O2. they start to die at above 25 deg.
  5. Public Id: 2013p614135 NZST: Friday, August 16 2013 at 5:31:15 pm Intensity: severe Depth: 5 km Magnitude: 6.3 Location: 25 km east of Seddon edit: deleted by GNS
  6. yes, if you have all the bits...
  7. Didn't feel any of them but was busy at the time, interestingly though a large box of plastic mats did fall off a pellet during one of the aftershocks around 4pm
  8. They cant be sold (well they probably could be but there are dozens on hoops to jump through) so they are all wild collected by us that keep them. Have a search around the native section for more info about them and where to grab some.
  9. take them down to your local engineer and get them to drill and tap some hanging holes?
  10. Long time no posts on this tank. It has finally finished its cycle with nitrates now reading 0 - around 6 months, as I was told by LA :sage: The diatomes have gone, as have 2 of the shrimp and the mud crab. The snails have grown heaps and so have the whitestripes, one of the macroalgae has has taken over any rock that gets sun or us under the 24w CFL. The other macro has vanished but there looks to be another that looks a little like BBA. There is also a touch of what looks like it could be cyano on the rock that gets the most sun.
  11. They don't look good If panda cory are the most fragile of the cories then I would err on the side of caution with any salt.
  12. I would treat with salt (tonic or rock) at only 1 or 2 g/L, they should be ok with that as long as it is added slowly over ~24h. I have treated whitespot in a tank with corys at that rate. as for other treatments I'll let others put in the 2 1/100 of a euro in
  13. My Giants decided that the inanga and bandeds tasted good only one banded left out of the ~1/2 dozen whitebait I had to replace the ones that died of old age last winter. I wonder if we need to have a "Show us your native tank" sticky thread?
  14. :gpo2: I have always thought it an odd statement as well, they can't build up a huge population without excess food (from feeding or light). I note that the population of snails in one tank has dropped since I added kuhli loaches and 2 red whiptails.
  15. Thanks Alan, I know how they work but hadn't thought about them using up all the O2 in a box
  16. those snails can breed like nothing else, well maybe like trumpet snails
  17. We have them, but want something to stick in a poly box and chuck on a courier. Then they cant forget to plug them in and we don't have to pay for postage both ways for the cell box. It will be from the waikato to wirarapa probably on net day postage. For overseas the queens go as mated queens with a thousand or so bees, so not so much of a problem. We can send cells in a box of bees but for some reason couriers don't seem to like packages marked "Live Bees" that buzz :slfg:
  18. What I (work) want them for is to transport queen cells at around 33deg. I was thinking that using a body of water as a thermol mass would be the best bet to keep a stable temp in the package. I might have to do some testing...
  19. What temp do they sit at? How long will they keep that them? What volume of water are the designed to heat? How much do they cost (and from where)?
  20. lets all sing a long, you know you have to ding-ding ring-ding-a-ding-ding...
  21. did you post on naturewatch, or just look? I would also post the aquatic plant for ID aswell.
  22. try http://wwwold.landcareresearch.co.nz/da ... egory_ID=3 or http://naturewatch.org.nz
