  1. we live in the age of pig flu, bird flu, mad cow... all sorts of diseases affecting animals that pose an insanely huge risk to the general population of the affected animal and just as much danger to humans as well. are fish exempt from the possibility of a disease such as bird flu arising?
  2. 8 including the three africans i had in a hospital tank for you - and all within the last 12 months. i have never had any fish die this way in the 4 years i've been keeping fish prior to this last year. as for the fish that don't die - TB has carriers which are generally unaffected by the disease, as do many other diseases. i am stunned at the attitude of some on here for what is quite a scary issue. imagine, if it is actually a new, strange, unidentified disease, and instead of dealing with it, we ignore it... it could spread to every tank in NZ in a matter of a few years.... could even spread to humans....
  3. one more person with "management issues"
  4. explain? we are quite desperate for a solution
  5. we are merely speculating, apologies if anyone misunderstood. i personally think it's important to get to the bottom of this issue before it spreads. i thought that notifying people that they may possibly have a disease is a logical step in the process of resolving and/or preventing this issue from spreading...
  6. quick look on trademe and they are sold for $1 to $3 fishguy usually gives retail price (and fair enough considering his job) maybe hit up one of these trademe sellers to see if they will ship you some?
  7. i'd prefer a fast painful death over several months of slow torture.. wouldn't you?
  8. yeah, same. doesn't really mean the fish are comfortable, or that it's not cruel to keep them in cold water. i also notice that guppies in cold water don't breed as frequently, take twice the time to grow to adulthood, and don't colour up very well either.
  9. i can assure you, i imagined a lot of weird and rather gory stuff based on my attempts to translate that diagram....
  10. sounds like the trees love it. you'd need all sorts of licences to distribute or use it as bait wouldn't you? red tape wouldn't be worth it...
  11. we haven't got either of those things sussed, hence, we cannot explain...
  12. what is the correct name for leopard fish? if you google it you just get ctenopoma
  13. going through a mulcher would be a pretty fast death i reckon... i'm very curious about the smell....
  14. no worries mate. there are tonnes of WCMM up here in auckland, couple of variations of them too. they'd make great self sustaining food colony for axys. they are usually on trademe, you would have to arrange shipping but being a hardy and cheap fish then shipping is a pretty good option for you.
  15. they eat native fish alive, what's the difference....
