  1. i think because you asked if the *male* was pregnant. ant, do you not know that male sea horses get pregnant?
  2. true that. i got a little centipede farm going up here if you want me to post any down.
  3. i had a theory that i haven't seen mentioned yet. which involves pumping water through a long length of tubing which is coiled up inside a fridge or freezer, then back to the tank. water passing through the tube will be cooled down during its journey through the fridge. similar to the solar heating systems people use on their swimming pool with the coils of black hose on the roof and water pumped through that. anyway. just an idea in my head, thought i'd explore it at some stage in my life.. i miss keeping natives but i want to sort out a chiller before i attempt to keep them again.
  4. i'm gonna take a guess here and say mash - the stuff they give to baby chickens
  5. ultimate culling machine
  6. you guys can edit/add columns to the spread sheet. hopefully nobody messes with it too much.
  7. that makes it sound like i went off topic... but what i'm saying is.. anything eating whitebait is bad.
  8. i personally have enough proof to believe that there is "something" killing my fish - enough proof to actually consider culling my babies and re starting. you guys seriously, after all of the people contributing to this thread, still believe that there is probably no problem at all and in fact it is mere coincidence or a batch of faulty heaters?
  9. if you eat their babies, then there will be less adults. follow?
  10. nothing. eating baby animals has totally no effect on the adult population at all.
  11. keeping spreadsheets, logging fish deaths, all sounds like quite an effort. i would rather put the effort into starting over - culling all my fish, cleaning/sanitizing all my gear and surrounding areas, and fix the problem for myself, or i could just stop keeping fish.. because at the end of the day why should i care if anybody else is having the same problem as i am.. if i can fix it for myself then i can bail from this issue and let all of you deal with it. if there is a bactaria/illness/disease or whatever, it's mafs problem in the long run, not mine. my point being, i think that MAF, or any of you master fish keepers, business owners, aquarists, should be more concerned about this than i am. why should i make the huge effort just to get them to do something about it when in the long run it's gonna end up being their problem, where as i can just bail on it if i choose to...
  12. sounds about right, but you know what my memory is like... it's why i relate to fish so well
  13. if this was the case wouldn't all the fish die at the same time? instead of fish randomly dying at random times and all the other fish being totally sweet?
  14. over the year that i have had this issue i have checked literally everything to ensure that the issue is not an oversight. it's hardly likely that all of us coincidentally have exactly the same technical issue....
  15. sounds expensive. if there is enough evidence that there is an unknown issue and it is killing fish, will MAF or some other government department look into it, as in pay for the autopsy? disease on a large scale should be concern for MAF or whoever is in charge of ensuring disease doesn't spread to our native fish? imagine this breaking out into our native fish... i'm gonna guess that most of these 50+ dead fish have been flushed down the loo or buried in the garden.....
  16. very true. but it is important to gather all the information we can on this issue, and here is the place to do it.
  17. neither because for now the issue is still unknown and involving fresh water fish so title is appropriate
  18. it has to have a good abbreviation. how about "fish unexplainably car king it"
  19. that's a great idea caryl. how would someone go about that? i'm sure it won't be long until i lose my next fish... was keeping the RTS as an example but it got smelly...
  20. we are speculating, not accusing. like when you suggested that this issue could be due to our poor management of fish, for example.
  21. unfortunately no business or company is going to admit to possibly having a disease whether they know about it or not. it could put them out of business. in fact, the fact that fish keep on dying is probably giving them more business eg. our fish die, we buy more.. cha-ching!
  22. WCMM are not native to NZ. there are not many people at all breeding natives, but plenty breeding WCMM. whitebaiting should be banned!! i have even stopped eating whitebait, even though i loved it, once i found out the ugly truth behind the effect whitebaiting has on our native fish i won't eat it or approve of anybody eating it any more.
