  1. Welcome chuckles. What size is the tank and how long has it been set up? Is the pH usually that low in it? Does it have live or plastic plants and is it well planted or quite bare? How often do you do water changes? What are the ammonia nitrite and nitrate readings? What else is in the tank (eg decorations, driftwood etc) and what filtration are you using? I would suggest you find the cause of the problem rather than mask it with products to raise the pH.

    Hello

Hi and welcome. I am a bit concerned about the number of fishes you already have in the tank. Did you cycle the tank first? Adding that many fish to a new tank can cause problems.
  3. They are probably very fine and clear. The fry are very hard to see when first hatched as they are so small. I found shining a torch down from above helped as their eyes reflected off the light. One of our members successfully bred hundreds of wwmm years ago in warm water but I always kept mine in cold. Both of us had successful spawnings.
  4. You can go rockpooling any time Andrew. Come and join the party! Dark, we will be gentle - at first.
  5. I rarely fed them at all to be honest. From memory (it was a few years ago) algae grew around the sides of the container so they browsed on that. I think I occasionally added a very small bit of fine fish food but can't remember sorry. They must have reproduced because 12 months later there were large and small ones swimming about. They need a lot of surface area I think which is why they tend to die in small containers (eg bottles for feeding fry). If we got a bucket of live shrimp from Grassmere, you had to get it back to town ASAP ( a 30 min trip) or most would be dead. Adding a battery operated air stone helped a lot with survival rates. Of course, there were hundreds in the bucket whereas I had relatively few in my container so they were not crowded.
  6. I had them growing in a plastic container. They grew a reasonable size and reproduced. I just used a square container, put some sand in the bottom, added sea water and brine shrimps then left it in the sun. It got topped up as the water evaporated. I only grew them out of curiosity, not to feed the fish as I was told there is little nutritional value in them once they are more than a few days old.
  7. Hi angie. I could not get your link to work. As far as I know there is no such thing as a true 'cold water guppy'. Guppies can live in cooler waters than a lot of tropicals so many say they can be kept in cold water. "Cold" refers to the average room temperature in a well insulated house. These are just guppies which have been raised in cooler temperatures. Have a look through the threads here talking about line breeding guppies. This is where you breed mothers to sons etc to get good colour strains. Incest seems to be desirable in guppies A heater is usually suggested for guppies and you will need a reasonable sized tank to breed them if you leave the fry in with them (but they usually get eaten) plus tanks for them to grow up in. Too small an area slows their growth. Depending on how many you plan to raise you can have a few, or many tanks.
  8. Grant and I will be there I gather Janey (unless you get us lost).
  9. Introducing a young male might make the older one try and prove he's still got it with the female, I did not suggest him as a mate!
  10. Between Hawkes Bay and the Blenheim sunshine coming up with us, Wellington should get a heatwave!
  11. Perhaps the novelty has worn off for the older pair Introduce a sexy young male and see if that makes the old fella a little more interested
  12. Please Janey. I don't think our visit to Janey and Mark includes a trip up as far as you Andrew
  13. My husband and I will be at the BBQ too so look forward to meeting you dark! I would be keen to know the flavour of the cookies too
  14. Size has nothing to do with sexing angels and you can have 2 females with one, or both, laying eggs. Had they been producing fry before?
  15. I know of people who just cut large sections out of the bottom and sides of an ice cream container (empty of course) then pull pantyhose over it. Works the same way.
  16. And you will be bought by someone setting up a male only guppy display tank
  17. Err, your arowana has fingers?
  18. Thank you both. I hope all those who are impressed with it will take the time to write something for it
  19. We could all do with improvement and a little refinement I am sure
  20. How excellent! Thanks Rob. I know you have been working on getting the breedings on-line for some time now.
  21. You may subscribe by sending me money  Subscription will have to go up with the increase in postage $21.80 gives you 4 issues per year. I am also going to have to review printing costs soon so the price may go up more for subscribers only. Most clubs do not meet over the Christmas New Year period and will be having their meetings soon. I believe the Hawkes Bay club is nearest to you? They meet in the aquarium in Napier.
  22. Thanks for letting us know about his passing Dr.Felix. He certainly had a wealth of knowledge and will be missed in fish keeping circles. I hope his stores are able to continue his work. RIP
  23. Never had this problem. Surely it will clear as the filter filters it over time?
