  1. One of the Kapi-Mana members is a very keen goldfish enthusiast. He even subscribes to the Goldfish Society of Great Britain (he is a Pom). Hawkes Bay also have a lady who regularly wins cold water fish and pond competitions and has bred goldfish for a number of years. PM me if you want some names and contacts as I would not like to name them here without their permission. I would imagine either would be happy to arrange pick up.
  2. My husband and I will be in ChCh Aug 1 - 2 for a computer show (go down Sunday and show in Monday. We head home that night). May we arrange a visit Layton? Would love to see your tank 'live'.
  3. They are great aren't they? I hope you realise it is illegal to take undersize paua . It doesn't matter whether you plan to eat them or not. Keep an eye on it in summer as they do not cope with warmer temperatures at all and if it dies out of sight, or you don't notice for a couple of hours, it will foul the tank very quickly.

    Mono

Hi and welcome kiwi. A tropical marine takes more dedication (and money) than fresh water.

    Mono

Welcome to the fishroom mono. A group of us can usually be found in the chat room most evenings from around 9pm. Drop in a say hi sometime. Love those scats! You don't see them in shops here very often these days.

    Hi everyone!

Hi and welcome Donna. There is a fish club in Wairarapa. They meet on the 1st Thursday of the month, 7.30pm at the MIS Environmental Centre, Masterton. I suggest you join as you will get good advice and help with fish and plants. I hope you know about 'cycling' a tank?

Not only does their pizza foul the tank but it leaves an oily film on the surface. The most annoying thing about them is the noise of little voices yelling "Cowabunga dude!" in the middle of the night

    New Fish on TV

They are lighter in colour when young and don't get their bristles for quite a few months - and then only the males get them. Bettas do not like strong currents so perhaps moving the pump will be enough. At least you noticed he wasn't getting his share!
  9. Moved this to the saltwater section Mitch where it is more likely to get an answer for you.

Matt is right. They are more often called dither fish and lots of plants makes fish feel more secure. Any small shoaling fish would do the job.
  11. To work out capacity, multiply the internal length, height and breadth in cms and divide the answer by 1,000. This will give you total litres. Don't forget to allow a wee bit for however far from the top your water level is and the amount of gravel and rocks etc added. 60 x 60 x 30 = 108 litres

Bristlenoses are nocturnal so drop their pellets in just before you turn the lights off. Guppies and platies are middle to top feeders anyway so the BNs should get their share. Have you any floating plants? Try feeding the main lot out the front and train the betta to come up to a corner separated from the rest by plants (like water wisteria, sagittaria, cabomba etc) so he gets his share tucked behind the plants and the rest can stuff themselves in the front of the tank. Rasboras or glowlights would be fine.

    cory pics

Excellent pics as usual suemack. Corys love being in a group and are a lot more active when there is 6 or more of them.
  14. We had a 3ft tank. We visited some rockpools down the Kaikoura coast and filled containers with rocks, water, and critters. Took them home, arranged all in the tank, added an AquaClear and that was it. Didn't do anything else to it. It occasionally got more sea water added to replace microscopic nibbles and we added sea lettuce every so often. We had shrimps, crabs, triplefins, starfishes of various sorts, a sea cucumber, anemones and an octopus (until he played Houdini and was found dried out on the carpet the next morning). We had to dismantle it though after a couple of years as we had trouble keeping it cool in summer. The room sat at 28 - 32C and they need to be 15C or lower. A chiller was required but we didn't have the $1,000 to buy one. All sorts of things were tried from running water through a chillybin type chiller to dropping frozen bottles of water in it.

    hello there

Hi and welcome neopole. Must be something to do with the tropical side as I too kept a cold water marine with nothing but an AquaClear filter. My problem was overheating during the summer months. Our cold water marine was the most interesting tank we have ever had.
  16. I think you will find Brooklands is wholesale only and do not sell to the public. Perhaps they have changed though.
  17. Oh to have space like that under your house I think we need to move.
  18. Are you sure that's what you felt?
  19. Hi spooky and welcome to the fishroom. I would suggest rummy noses and some bristlenoses for the bottom perhaps. There is a fish club in Dunedin too. They meet 7pm every 2nd Tuesday of the month at The Pet Warehouse.
  20. Thank you chimera. Ignore those others. You are right, just because it is old news to them, and they know everything, doesn't mean others won't appreciate it.

You need to talk to Peter McLeod in Rotorua. Not too far from the Waikato is it? Peter belongs to these forums. Look for him (under that name) in the memberlist and send him a PM.
  22. You are able to join a club even if you are unable to get to meetings fins. My club has members all over the country and it is fun when we get to meet some of them like we will when we go to Napier. Make sure you join a club with an informative newsletter though

    Sick Fish

I don't know much about disease but I understood loaches were very sensitive to white spot meds. I assume the new tank was set up using filters that had been running in the smaller one and some of the old tank water so you didn't have to cycle it? Were the clowns not quarantined first? They are very susceptible to white spot. Perhaps the behaviour is a leftover from treatment? Anyone else able to help?
  24. Tip: You need at least one of each sex  Welcome to the fishroom. Sorry but I haven't bred rams. Hope someone else can be more helpful. Perhaps we will see you in the chat room sometime? Several of us are there most nights around 9 - 9.30pm onwards for an hour or two.
