  1. They are just a colour variation. Treat as you would any other barbs.
  2. One platy two platies as far as I know but have also seen platys. It is NOT platties though
  3. Thanks guys. That's what I figured.

    Hi from Wanganui

Welcome Shar. Unfortunately the club in Wanganui went into recess a few years ago. Ever thought of starting it up again yourself?
  5. Never had a problem with them in plague proportions but would suggest cutting back the food and doing daily water changes with thorough vacuuming of the substrate until numbers drop.

    Hello!!

Welcome Christine. Hope we see you in chat sometime
  7. They can be but then again... You can have a pair do nothing for a few years then suddenly go mad and produce spawn after spawn for 7 or 8 times then stop again. No apparent reason.
  8. No, I'm not talking about my trip to Fiji! Someone wants to change their coldwater setup to tropical. The tank has UGFs. Can he just add a heater and raise the temp or will it upset the bacteria and have to re-cycle?
  9. About 30 of us I gather. Not all belong to here though. Suemack is another, Janey, Jo (who isn't in here often) too for starters
  10. You must have something good in the water up there Kim!
  11. What else is in the tank? Perhaps other fish are eating the eggs.
  12. It might but if the females are close to birth shifting them will cause them to abort. Better to leave this lot and make sure conditions in the 2nd tank are ready next time the females are ready to drop. Make sure you have plenty of fine leaved plants in the tank and quite a few may survive. java moss is excellent for this. Test the water in the other tank and if it is similar, move the males and leave the females where they are - easier.

    Sword+white poop

If they are pooping then I would say they can't be constipated. Has their diet changed recently? Try feeding a few cooked peas with the shells removed as I am told this is a good way to clean out a fish's system.
  14. Remind me about it when we get back from Fiji
  15. Because of the affect they would have on our native fish and plants. Koi are banned here for the same reason.
  16. Oh I didn't realise it was a Tilapia. Definitely banned in NZ then
  17. Don't think I have seen one of those before. I had a Jaguar cichlid once who had a tank to herself for the same reason.
  18. Quite possibly Ira but time is the problem. Grant is so busy it might take a while to get it done! I know someone who used to make them too but not sure if he still does. He lives in Levin.
  19. I am sorry to see such a reaction to a reply. Our concern is for the inhabitants. Just because it is a fish does not mean it doesn't deserve the best conditions you can give. If the other fish die that's too bad?? What sort of attitude is that towards a living creature dependent on you for its quality of life? Although Alan was a bit harsh he made good points. If the infection now spreads to the other fish - and you - and you get sick and die I guess that's too bad too.
  20. I doubt it NPnewbie as it is specialised cable. We got ours from Argus Heating in Christchurch. The only one I can find now is a different address and phone number but I assume it is the same company but they have moved in the intervening years. 455 St Asaph St. Christchurch. 03 379 5100. They will need to know what you want the cable for, how many watts you need and the cable resistance to achieve this.

    Fisb TB

Here is an article about it. There is a followup one there too. http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/man ... umans.html
  22. I hope you have a bigger tank ready for them.
  23. If you turned the tank upsidedown I suggest you look under the furniture  It probably died and was eaten.
