    driftwood

I have organised a high sided box with an open top so they can breathe but high enough so the more agile ones can't climb out
  2. I remember seeing the site where they showed how that pic was done merging two different pics. Until you said that I had forgotten they had also said it was a dolphin.

    driftwood

Most definitely Judy! We have our driftwood trap ready and will post pics when we return  You should have been in the chat room for the discussion on how to sex driftwood, when their hibernation season was over, and the best way to catch them  Some people's sense of humour is a worry
  4. I don't use the carbon and replace it with extra sponges or stuff like Siporax or other bio media.
  5. Good start. I think the placement of the plants will eventually hide the heater and filter successfully.
  6. I find freezing small amounts of things is easy if you put them into mini plastic ice block cubes, available at shops like The Plastic Box. Stops them sticking together. Might be worth checking out the $2 Shop or similar too. The ones I have are in trays of 15 squares. Each one is 2cm square.
  7. Hi Graeme. Would you like to post the recipe in a thread of its own for anyone who would like to make it? Better yet, email it to me and I will put it in the next Aquarium World
  8. Graeme dropped fish off to us on Sunday night. He is in your Year Book under HBAS.
  9. It isn't the breeding that is difficult shae, it is breeding in large commercial numbers that has been the problem I believe. One of our former members took a video of their seahorse giving birth and it was fascinating.
  10. There has already been quite a discussion in here re native marines but usually to set up as a rock pool and easy to do if you can keep the tank cool enough. I would not like to see snapper and kahawai kept in a tank as they are meant to be able to swim quickly in large expanses of ocean.

    driftwood

Our club is doing a day trip to Hokitika on the 10th Oct (next Sunday) to see what we can find in the way of driftwood. The river mouth often has some nice pieces of already waterlogged rimu and rata.

    Daphnia?

Luke I just caught some in a white container and took a pic with the digital camera using a cheapie close-up lens
  13. Are you volunteering to organise one luke? We have been asked to do it again next year but I think it may be too much work and perhaps every 2 years might be more manageable.
  14. They are also good at sulking and not eating for a week or so when moved BG. Don't worry about it. As Kim said, he will eat something when he is hungry enough. Sorry I don't know who you got it from. Wasn't Graeme Antonievic was it?
  15. What a pity you didn't see them being born! A great sight. Try www.photobucket.com as a free hosting site.

    Daphnia?

Good researching fins. Here are some of my daphnia...
  17. Some fish travel better than others Luke. Considering what many pay for their discus, I guess they weren't willing to risk the stress. Discus are easily stressed. I know I didn't enter any of my Africans. Not because they wouldn't travel well but because I would have trouble reintroducing them back into the tank when I got home as they would have lost their territories.
  18. I used to have them years ago. A beautiful fish.
  19. The more food they have the faster they reproduce. Keep them under control by feeding them to the fish. You can also use dried yeast or blood to feed the daphnia.
  20. Not only should it work, but I have added several more albums so there are pics of the Napier Aquarium and Wet Pets shop in Palmerston North too.
  21. A day in which you have not learned something is a day wasted LB!
  22. It appears someone kicked the bucket! Some of us lost our albums - one of them was me. All those pics I uploaded have to be done again!!!! Please be patient as I reload them all in between blowing my nose, hoicking up phlegm and coughing my guts out
  23. All the FNZAS requires of a group is that it "has as its objects the assistance of those interested in aquarium or pond keeping or kindred interests". I think you need a president and sec/treasurer at least as you need to be contactable as a club. To affiliate to the FNZAS you apply in writing to the FNZAS secretary. She then informs all other clubs of your wish to join the FNZAS. If there are no objections within 2 months your club is afforded full membership - on payment of capitation fees and Year Book levy. The capitation fee is $5 per person. If you already belong to another affiliated society you do not have to pay this sub twice. The YB levy is $25 per club per year. It helps go towards paying printing costs. If you can get a business to buy an advertising strip for $25 this can pay your levy for you at no cost to your members. The YB lists all affiliated clubs and members with details of names, addresses, meeting times and places etc. It also details our trophies and competitions, club duties to the FNZAS, FNZAS duties to clubs, a list of retailers offering FNZAS member discount and all sorts of bits and pieces of helpful information. It also has our Constitution printed in it.
  24. If you threw a few daphnia into that green jar it would turn clear overnight and be full of fat and happy daphnia!
