    Discus

I am at work at the moment bart but will email you tonight the contact details of a man in Nelson who is trying to get a club up and running there again. He has joined our club in the meantime (I suggest you do too - I sent you the costs) and comes over here to attend meetings. Maybe you could hitch a ride with him?

    Swordtails

Changing sex is known in the fishy world although sometimes it may be a late developing male. You can keep 2 males together if there are plenty of hiding places as one will always want to be dominant. Just keep an eye on them and if one seems to be getting harassed, remove it. Always make sure there are plenty of females to share
  3. Bright red??? They are "Fantail Orange"! I have never seen an orange fantail but there you go. Warren we have had a couple pull out due to unforeseen circumstances. I will email you names etc over the weekend.

    Rainbow ID

The bottom one matches more, the top one is totally a different shape. Thanks for the help, I will assume it is the M splendida australis. If it isn't and the judges disqualify it I am not too worried. At least it is an entry!
  5. Sorry to hear the oscar died. Keep an eye out for early signs of illness on the other one.
  6. I used to use Adobe Photoshop but it was very unstable (particularly with XP) which is why I changed to Adobe Photo Elements.
  7. I would appreciate that Rob. Gotta enter my fish with the right name! I have tried to ID them myself but the pics I have found, all under the same name, are all totally different colours, stripes etc.
  8. I've done all that Warren but no one seems to be able to agree on the ID  . I know they are rainbows. I'm pretty sure they are both Melanotaenia but then I get stuck

  10. Adobe Photo Elements 2.0 Microsoft Digital Image Pro These are the 2 I use the most.
  11. immersion heater - I couldn't remember the name. Happy heating
  12. Getting better! As Alan says, resize the pics (640 x 480) before posting. Keep up with the practise 8)
  13. You can buy those little heater things to put in cups etc to boil water for a cup of tea (popular before thermos' became less breakable I gather). It would heat them quickly.
  14. Different photographer? Light is very important. Not enough light and too much movement in the tank (and of the camera) will add to fuzziness. That first pic has quite a lot of things moving and the light wouldn't be strong enough to allow the camera to decide on what to focus. The other pics don't have all that movement in them. Are they the same tank?
  15. What happens if we don't know what the fish is we want to enter? :-? Is it enough to say it is a rainbow of some sort?
  16. Lighting makes a big difference. You have also aimed slightly upwards so got reflection from the light above the tank by the looks of it. Get as much light into the tank as possible. Steady the camera with a tripod, or sit it on something solid and aim it slightly from the side and downwards from a higher spot than before. For every 20 pics you take you might get 1 that is good.

Doc that tank and those pics are awesome!
  18. Is it important to have surge protection for all aquarium devices? Only the expensive ones

    Rainbow ID

I know one of them is the maccullochi but I thought it was the top one :-? 2 claim it is the bottom one so I will go with the consensus
  20. The angels and the gouramis won't like too much current. As said, the direction you point them will make a big difference.
  21. I'm sure we have all left a heater unplugged at some stage. Keep an eye out over the next few days as you might get an outbreak of white spot. Then again, if the room temp wasn't too bad the fish would handle it as the temp would have slowly dropped and it is sudden temp changes that upset them most.

Pardon the spots on the glass I have looked on the Net but every pic I find is different!

    Rainbow ID

Can anyone ID these 2 rainbows for me? I am pretty sure the first one is Melanotaenia Maccullochi

    pond weed?

Pond weed could be anything. Assuming you haven't been using chemicals in the garden I would give it a go. If it grows floating in the yard then I would float it in the tank. If it starts to take over trim it back hard, or take it out again. Check it thoroughly for any sign of blanket weed or other algae which would be transferred to the tank.
