If you start separating them you will quickly be overrun with baby guppies!
The males will chase anything - pregnant or not.
The female may take a day or 2 to drop all the fry and will immediately be pregnant again.
I would be happy too if I wasn't being bugged by males all the time
Why not just set up the existing tank elsewhere? Saves hauling out the other tank.
The plants will be fine for a few days without added light or heat since it will be January. I assume it gets reasonably warm then even in Dunedin
The fish don't care about light so it will not affect them at all.
Do you belong to the Dunedin Aquarium Society? I am sure they could help you - even if you decide to dismantle the tank and farm out the fish temporarily.
egg yolk is fine phillz but be careful not to over-use it as it pollutes the tank very quickly. Fine flake is ok too.
If they are happy in the moss then leave them there. That is what it is for.
It does not necessarily belong in the livebearer forum as he was asking a breeding question.
I don't keep fry in the traps either. In fact I never use them at all except to separate an injured fish to stop it being attacked.
But there is only one saltwater forum and all the rest are freshwater so you can't compare just the two without taking the others into account.
I am pleased to see how well the saltie side has taken off though and also pleased to see a lot of good advice from you all. I am sure a lot more people have ventured into marine after reading some of your posts and seeing the pics.
I personally don't like to do that shiuh as I feel the fish may build up an immunity to whatever you have added. Never add anything to your tank unless you have to is my motto.
I like your "I only have medium sized tanks 600 - 1200L". The trademe sales offering LARGE TANK! which turns out to be 60cm x 30 x 30 make me laugh.
Will want to discuss filters, and glass thickness, with you when you arrive Warren
Thank you from one who is almost to 4,000
Did you notice an improvement in print quality Warren? Put the Aug and Nov together and I am sure you will see the difference. Very happy with the new printer. It is a bit slower than the other but makes up for that in quality and cost - cheaper to run so I won't have to put the price up after all. 8)
Thanks Kim. BTW, that CD has more pics in the 'shrunk' folders than are seen in the mid size as many went from large to small without that middle size.
What this means is they scatter eggs over several days so the young appear over several days as well, rather than altogether. If you have several females they can be producing fry at different times, hence 'breed on a daily basis'.
The gravel would have been 5 - 6cm I guess. Current tank is only about 4cm deep. Have grown a variety of plants with no problems. Never had a tank go toxic either. I recommend them as a cheap way to get started in the hobby rather than forking out big $$ for external canisters and the like.
I like the hang on type too and run a couple of AquaClear 500's, one over 10 years old and still going well.
I also have 2 Fluval 404's and an Eheim wet/dry on other tanks plus run a couple of Shark internals for use in an emergency if required.
