    Hiya

Hi Phillz good to meet you. One of our members is moving house and has spent the day catching goldfish and putting them in a paddling pool until she can get a pond built at the new place.
  2. It is my understanding that with marines you have to build your tank up slowly and can't even add fish for 6 months or more. Then, when you do, you have to be very careful what you add and the order you add them so they will live together. Someone might want that angel very badly but is unable to get it right then due to their tank not being ready or having to move another inhabitant. Overall turnover is higher for freshwater from a livestock point of view. Having read a lot of saltwater posts re set-up costs, running costs, and choosing inmates I am afraid I am going to have to be boring and stick with freshwater - no matter how beautiful a well set up marine tank looks
  3. Beaut pics kiwimeg! Thanks for sharing. Love the first one.
  4. SAEs are fine as community fish but make sure they are true SAEs you are buying as there is a very similar fish commonly available and also sold with the same name.
  5. Redwoods in ChCh have been getting a few killies I hear. Marty, in Dunedin,is breeding them. He is sometimes in the chat room after 9pm.

    Lazy Fin

Is he being bullied by the other males? I think it is too early to say there is no hope!

    Lazy Fin

Any other signs of illness? Looking thin? Lesions anywhere? Have you tested the water pH, nitrite, nitrate and ammonia? I would guess if all the other fish are fine then it is the fish, not the tank with the problem. Have his fins always been like this? Is it possible it is a deformity? Make sure he gets his fair sahare of food. I assume he is eating?
  8. Adding my 2c worth - I think they are males too

Clamped fins is a sign of distress.
  10. 50 minutes? Efficient woman! Congratulations to you both. I hope all are well.
  11. Tilapia, grown as food fish in other countries, are banned in NZ
  12. Sounds good mouse. The daphnia may have been too large for the fry and that is why they died. If you put pics in a yahoo album you can put a link to it but not add any of the pics into the threads here. If you want to do that I suggest you use a host like photobucket.
  13. Hollywood Fish Farm should be able to help you as they sell them.
  14. Stick with the first version guys, it's smaller
  15. A lot of people love them but personally I don't. They were very popular for a while with Asians as the markings on them were supposed to be lucky. As they grew (and often got vicious towards other fish) though their owners lost interest and parts of Asia now have a big problem with them breeding in the watrways and wiping out other species and decimating the plants. They were being sold for thousands of dollars at one point but the price has dropped a lot since the novelty wore off.
  16. Brine shrimp will grow to adults if you don't feed them to any fish Shiuh  . I too never fed my adult shrimps anything.
  17. How long has the tank been set up breakaway? New tanks can lack fertiliser for the plants so they brown off a bit until the tank matures more.
  18. 15 fish in 3 weeks - I'd do a water change now. 25% water changes will not affect your bacterial growth. Do it weekly. Have you tested the water at all? pH, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia? That brown can be common in a new tank. There is nothing for the plants to feed on at first. As the tank matures the plants will improve. Remove the brown leaves. Got any pics?
  19. I got my WCMM free as we had members giving them away at the time Cardinals I have seen from $6.95 - $8.95

    jellybean tetras

They are two diferent issues. Dyed fish are injected, it damages the fish and they die quickly so should not be supported. GE doesn't.

Yeah I figured they were Graeme's. As I said, a bit slow tonight. See you at the meeting. Perhaps we will have to have November's meeting at your place

Duh I'm a bit slow tonight. I think I just worked out who you are  . It's been a long day.
  23. Have you tested it from the tap? Some areas have high phosphates in their water.
  24. We do the rounds but Organism is my favourite. Redwoods, Critter Kingdom and Petworld also get a visit.
  25. I bred mine in ice cream containers but was told by an old aquarist that a wooden box was best, like an old tea box, as it breathes.
