  1. Can you remove any of the other fish? I suggest you leave a light on in the tank too (or a lamp near the egg end of the tank) as they haven't a hope of protecting the eggs in the dark. Both will protect the eggs hopefully. If you can get the parents to look after them it is good. It can be done! Sometimes takes them 6 or 7 dpawns to get the idea though. If this lot get eaten, separate the pair from the other fish and hopefully they will spawn again with more success.
  2. I get red xs too . What a tease!
  3. You can't sex them until they are a bit bigger. In males, the anal fin under the body is long and pointed but on the female this fin is short and round. Tail shape isn't an indicator of sex
  4. We had a fishtank sittng on top of one of our speakers for a number of years with no discernible adverse effects on the fish. The speakers are 930H x 460W x 420D and when you turn up the 1812 Overture you can feel the vibrations through the wooden floor! Fish didn't turn a hair (or a scale). They also take no notice of the Blues Brothers played at a loud volume to be heard over the vacuum cleaner
  5. Melanotaenia - I thought it was most likely C pontederiifolia too but wondered if anyone else had any other thoughts. The other plant is red rotala.

    OB Zebras

    what does OB mean?
  7. Here is my lounge tank. It was recently heavily pruned of plant and just starting to grow back. It is a 4ft tank with 4 daylight fluoros and no CO2 or anything added. If anyone can tell me what the last plant is I'd appreciate it. I have one or two ideas but...
  8. Not sure if they would be safe to use. What is the divider made out of? Could the netting be stapled to the frame? Freshwater only of course. Or stitched.
  9. Fish vary in colour depending on their mood and condition. Although the bars do not mean they are ready to mate, it might mean they are in better (or worse) condition that before so have coloured up that little bit more, making the bars more noticeable.
  10. PK - Yahoo won't let you link to other places. I use photobucket too - in fact I just bought their deal which allows unlimited pics. I can see imageshack being useful for those one off - what is this fish? or what is wrong with this fish? type pics Kim - I have seen that bathroom sink and thought it wasn't a bad idea. We will be doing up our bathroom and it got me thinking...
  11. I suggest the FNZAS survey has a spelling error as all my books have it the other way.

    Brown Algae

6 weeks isn't long Janet. Give the tank time to establish and the plants to grow and that algae will disappear.
  13. They'll start when they are ready wok The dads are good protective parents of the eggs but ignore the fry usually.
  14. It takes time for whitespot to go through their life cycle phillz. Have you tested the tank water? What are the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings? What size is the tank by the way? Keep up with the medication and siphon the bottom of the tank to get rid of extra cysts.
  15. I presume you mean only 4 of 20 survived and all males? I can only think of something in the water that affected the females who were more susceptible being pregnant. Other than that I draw a blank. Any other fish in the tank apart from the pristellas? Seems odd it didn't affect the females of them though.
  16. Not only did the anemone change colour but that shrimp changed speices! I didn't know they grew up to be clownfish
  17. Thanks for letting us know about it Layton

    Hey

Hi Nick and welcome to the fishroom. We have a few members from over the Tasman now. I think some of us already asleep by the time we get into the chat room
  19. Perhaps we could buy them all a dictionary for Christmas with the word TROPICAL underlined for their edification. :-?
  20. Sorry to disappoint you but 2 hot 2 handle is really for anything off topic  This section is just as good a place to put the story and may be read by others who do not read the other section. I heard the story on the radio this morning. Amazing creatures dolphins.

    WOW!

More likely the tank lighting combined with a bit of photoshop
  22. When you buy fish from a shop you take them home then float them for some time to equalise the temperatures. Remember 'cold' isn't that cold in your lfs. The tank will probably be at least 18 - 20C anyway so not truly 'cold'.

    moving questions

Has the tank got a flat 'foot' base or does it stand on 4 narrow legs? Put it against a load bearing wall and running crosswise to the joists then keep your fingers crossed. Hopefully the floor is already well supported. Surely the tank would be all right for a short while without a chiller? After all, rockpools get very warm in between high tides. It is constant warmth that is the problem. Good luck with the move.

    Hi!

That shop isn't marine only Ben, none of them are. Marines are very much the minority here due to the expense. Bring your wallet or mastercard with you
  25. I wouldn't worry about it Kribs aren't fussy.
