    Yummy live food

I put out a bit of cats meat (meat for the cat not meat from the cat) in a container covered with gladwrap and sat in the sun. Maggotsville!

Cool pics Ira! Nothing eeew or yucky about them at all. They feel nice in your hands (so do maggots actually - tickly)
  3. If you hang on a bit the site is about to get an upgrade and will be able to host your pics here.
  4. My 4ft community has 4 daylight fluorescents and the African 4ft has a double fluorescent (probably daylight or bright white). Any tanks I have that are 2ft or less I use those short fluorescent bulbs which just lie on the glass lid with a piece of plastic guttering over it for a reflector.
  5. Have a good holiday Alana and safe driving to you.
  6. I agree with Alan. No chance. If MAF found it you would be in major doo doo with fines of up to $10,000 I believe.
  7. I need articles desperately melanotaenia as I haven't started the Feb AW yet . If anyone else has some articles to offer it would be much appreciated! Gareth is coming up from ChCh on Thursday so I will need to know about the plant ASAP (assuming he is willing to go and get it)
  8. Echinodorus tenellus - mini chain sword. Organism in ChCh had glossostigma recently. My son is coming home from ChCh for Christmas and I could see if he has time to pop in and get a pot of it for you if you like. It was $8 something I think. I will be in Wgtn on Jan 15, 16 so could bring it with me.
  9. Have you tried Dick Smith or Jaycar? Otherwise, an electrical wholesaler should have them.
  10. I can see them all. Perhaps your glasses need cleaning Alan
  11. We used to buy them from the pet shop for $10 but I would expect they are more like $30 - $40 if you can find one. They used to be used when heaters and thermostats were 2 separate bits of equipment but went out of style once heaterstats came on the market.
  12. I don't think anyone in here gets bored with other people's fish pics.
  13. Depends on the size of the fish. You will get a lot of algae growth on the glass and keep an eye on water evaporation. It is amazing how fast it evaporates in the sun! As inside, make sure the base is stable and level. Of course, cracks on an outside tank are not as costly as having a tank crack when inside.
  14. Silver dollars grow very large and rip all plants to shreds.
  15. Hi Fay. You have several choices depending on whether you are able to attend meetings. If not, choose a club with a good, informative, regular newsletter. Hamilton has the Waikato Aquarium Soc. Not sure about their newsletter as I do not get one. Contact Rob from in here as he is the president. Auckland has a choice of 3 clubs; Auckland Fishkeepers; sec is Piet [email protected]. They have a good colour newsletter. North Shore Aquarium Soc; contact Kim in here as she is their president. Don't know anything about their newsletter either. Sth Auckland Aq & Watergarden Soc; meet occasionally for dinner I understand and do not have a newsletter. There is a group of marine keepers in Auckland who have met a couple of times and talk about starting an official club but not sure how far along they are with that. They send out the occasional newsletter. They are not affiliated with the FNZAS at this point. If you are unable to attend meetings but wish to be affiliated to the FNZAS to get the Aquarium World magazine etc. you could join the NZKA (NZ Killifish Assoc) as they are postal only but specialise in killifish. My own club, Marlborough Aquarium Club, has members from around NZ (and overseas) and we have a full colour newsletter too. The choice is yours. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.
  16. Well I hope it doesn't grow to 260mm!!!

    Hi there

    Welcome aboard critters
  18. Most fly sprays use pyrethrum. I spray for flies at the opposite end of the room to my tank and don't have any problems but my tank is well covered too. If you have external pumps (like you attach to box and ugf's) they can suck the stuff in through their vents underneath. Can you get one of the auto things for a trial? Make sure it is as far away from the tank as possible. For the amount of flies he has Shae I don't think a room with venus fly traps on every surface could keep up with the numbers! They are a cool plant though.

    New tank mates

Plain silver or black does not indicate a more 'pure' strain than the marbled varieties.
  20. The bigger the fish the more we get attached. Sorry Ira
  21. Put the peat in some old pantyhose
  22. I also meant to say I buy wallpaper scrapers for getting algae off the glass. They have nice wide blades in them and a handle so are easier to use than razor blades. You can also buy them in packs in some $2 shops or they go on special for $1 each in Mitre 10 when they have their big sales.
  23. That's why I have left things alone. Late afternoon and they are still guarding. I am feeding a little more to the others in the hopes they lose interest in the eggs.
  24. They are still guarding eggs this morning. I am leaving the lights on 24hrs so they aren't fighting off raiders in the dark.
