  1. It is legal plant (came out of the waterway that runs through the middle of the town). The bath is 300mm deep. Over 450mm and it requires fencing according to local bylaws. It ices over in winter but this is Marlborough so it only gets about 5mm at its thickest and thaws out quickly as the bath gets full sun most of the day. We are planning to landscape the whole front yard at long last and the planned pond will be about 5 x 7m. I will, of course, be taking photos of the whole procedure and doing an article in the Aquarium World 8)
  2. Welcome to NZ forsterfish. Sounds like a nice set-up you have there. Plenty of fellow cichlidiots here to talk to!
  3. Early2003 we dug a bath into the ground outside and filled it with water. When we set up the African tank, we cycled it using 4 goldfish around 8cm each. When the tank had cycled, we added the thermostat and threw the goldfish out into the pond (it was April and the outside water temperature was the same as that of the tank inside) where they have been ever since. They have lots of oxygen weed, green water and insects dropping in. We have never fed them. At the height of last summer we found 1 dead and suspected lack of oxygen but the others were OK. Yesterday I looked outside to see quite a few good sized fry basking at the surface! Guess I'd better look into getting the main pond built - we have been talking about it for about 20 years now  and this is part of mum by the looks of it...
  4. Gee who's counting the fry before they're hatched?
  5. I see no reason to split this. It was your thread to start with, your original request was addressed and now you are in discussion about the consequences - sort of
  6. Hi and welcome to NZ 8) . No flying snow here at the moment I can often be found in The Tropical Tank too - an excellent UK based forum.
  7. Very nice! I am sure it won't be long before you have bred them as well. I can see a new winner for the breeding trophy next year!

    Hey all

2 thoughts on not being able to get into chat... 1. You have to have Javascript installed 2. You may be trying to use a name already chosen (although I assume you used 2manytanks and there isn't anyone using that name.)
  14. An official welcome from me to you simfish, even if we have been chatting elsewhere in here for a while  You can still have an African set-up - get another tank!! 8)
  15. What about it being a small piece of Java moss looking pale and weedy from lack of light?

    MINI Moss

Depends on what you call mini moss. Do you mean Java moss, Vesicularia dubyana?
  17. When they are ready to spawn the males will get small white spots on their gills. Look down on the fish from above. The females will be fatter and stick out slightly more on one side so the tail looks like it is slightly more left or right than centred along the spine. The males are slim and their body even on both sides so the tail looks centred.

    Stringy poos

If you are talking poos then you are talking s**t  I thought fish poo was supposed to be stringy but if it is slimy and stringy it indicates a problem. Add sunken bellies and I would suspect internal problems. White or yellow and slimy indicates intestinal flagellates and ciliates If the fish keeps trailing around a long slimey thread it can also be the flagellates or worms. Have a close look at the poo under a microscope and see if you can see worms or eggs in it. Ain't fishkeeping fun? 8)
  19. Yes kermit, I snorkelled every day plus we went out on the semi-submersible (and saw the same sort of fish in your pics) and did a day trip on a yacht and, once it anchored, leaped off and had a swim in the bay.
  20. Bula kermit. We too loved our time in Fiji. We were based at Plantation Island and would recommend it to all. Love your pics.
  21. What sort of algae? I have a Chinese algae eater in with bristlenoses and have never seen them take any notice of each other.
