I am up super early for me atleast, been awake since 5am. Cleaned my house, packed my kids school lunches and caught up on all my mails and stuff on the internet, Now why on earth would I be up if I could be snug in my little bed. Well I have a loving kitty cat that stood on top of me meowing for some food, when I turned over she jumped on my beds headboard and insisted on some food. So I dragged myself up poured her some whiskas milk and some fresh pellets. She took one pellet in her mouth ONE and then dashed off. I dragged myself to my room to find her sleeping on my hotspot and refusing to leave, how cheeky is that

So hubby decided to change his mind again, I will update the thread name again. He wanted to know if a colourful fish like for instance discus will be able to live happily in there, then all he wants to do is fill it with water, build a special box for it similar to the one Fishguy posted and we will hide the filters inside the fireplace, there will be only a paper background in the back and gravel to give the fish their space, he wants to put a moon type light thingy in so the colours of the fish are more vibrant. I told him I would run it by you guys and see what you think, we will deffinetly need advice on bracing though, that tank bowed like no tomorrow when we filled it up to check for leaks
-
Oh wow that would have been very helpful, but hubby changed his mind again LOL Post to follow this one. :nilly: Ooooh perhaps a nice plumbob floating in the middle of the tank :sml2: naaaaa my sims are supernatural at the moment, I am playing a werewolve family and they would eat my poor fish if it was a full moon, so no fish for them LOL
-
LOL at the Zombie Cat So we want to start by making a thin but rather rocky looking background perhaps with holes in so that the plants can be put in it that is above water so their container thingies are not as obvious. Is there a specific type of polestyrine that needs to be used or can it be any, reason I am asking is we were cleaning out the garage for inorganics and we have found 3 large expols we never used. We bought them from bunnings, they only sell the one type in different sizes, can a person use that, and how would be the best way to cut it?

Happy birthday Donna, hope you have a super duper day :happy1:

Thank you I might in the future, we are going to drive around this weekend and just look at all kinds of stuff out there. Looks like this project is gonna take forever to set up LOL
-
Rasbora sounds interesting, I have had bad experiences with Danios I will look at the tetra types a person get too Hubby thought of this, will it work? He said we could paint the back with a layer of cement and then add pieces of polystyrene which we can paint with the cement as well, so its like a super thin home made background. We will ofcourse use the right type of stuff, like the ones that is used in the diy background threads. Yes and with how the ligthing is in my lounge it should get a lot, but we will do tank lighting too sounds nice, but it looks like I will be aiming at schoolfish this time round Yeah Beachlands get very hot and humid in summer. I think with doing the riparium I will look at filling it at the most halfway, looking at more one third like the pic, we are going to try and do somthing like the pic. Will drive around this weekend and see what type of goodies is out there. THanks so much for everyones ideas so far, I appreciate and read every single one

Been looking for one for a while, but they aint come cheap and if they do I always get outbid grrrr. But I could look out for one, why not :slfg: editted to add. Just spoke to hubby about native and he shook his head. Gotta keep the hubby happy so. So far its a tropical Riparium he decided that he likes that idea
-
a native tank is super tempting, especially since I read Stella's book every spare minute I have, but because of that I know it won't work I will never be able to keep the tank at its required temp cause Beachlands get pretty warm, I always freeze bottles of pump water in summer and have my aquaminder warn me when the temp goes over 28 degrees. But that would be super duper awesome
-
Yeah we got a pretty big fright when it bowed like that. Was suprised it did not burst open. I will show hubby your pics, that looks very cool edit. Just showed Hubby and he was super impressed with the first pic, looks like you got his attention  So what type of fish for a Riparium?
-
Ok, so it looks as if the canister way is the way to go, Hubby agrees with you too. Hubby said if he had to make a boxframe he would use stainless first to brace the tank, and it would be a glove fit then build the box around that instead. We still need ideas on how to brace though, we are a bit silly in knowing where to brace. Will Angels be happy in that tank, the width is a bit tight for them. Hubby said we would like to avoid drilling for now.
-
My husband said we could hide it inside the fireplace, that could be an option if I had to go the cannister way. Hubby also said he could build a box frame thingy for the tank too, he is very very handy  I am so happy about this, Hubby told me I would never have a second tank LOL and just look who dragged one home himself
-
Any ideas on bracing, we nearly had a heart attack when it bowed out like that at the top
-
Yes something similar to that. I have never used the others so won't know how to upkeep them. Guess I could learn if they are the only option
-
Great idea SamH, the plants will be nice and sturdy in a thick layer of gravel, I am thinking midnight gravel like my other tank, since its in the same room. Can a person buy those other filters like the blue planet tanks have, I find those easy to keep since its all I had, have never used the outside types before, a large school would look awesome, I currently have a 40+ harlequin school in the other tank and it looks super
-
I prefer ottos too They are hardworking and so cute. I might get a nice golden bristlenose just for some colour. mmmmm driftwood will be a problem, perhaps I can get a nice big one in size and then take the skillsaw to it and get it the width I require LOL
-
To clean it, I allready have a deep tank 60 cm so I have the appropriate long gravel vac. I also thought of little school fish, I am all for putting fish in the right size tanks. I have some beautiful well established ambulia that would reach all the way to the top. Its all the way to the top in my current tank and its bending over and floating at the top of the tank, so plants should be ok too. I thought of adding some ottos as the cleaning crew, not sure if Bristlenoses will be happy with that width
-
No we have not used it for a year now, we installed a heatpump So fire won't be used, its purely decorative
-
Hey that is something I did not know, so its all good :slfg: Sorry I meant that we are going to put it against the wall since its not as broad as other tanks. We don't want to put it into the wall. Imagine it sitting on the wooden mantle part of the fireplace. Its about the same width
-
The glass is 6mm thick for the tank and the plates glass is 10mm thick and they are siliconed tight. The plates are 26cm by 35cm

Hubby came home with this fishtank, he picked it up at our local inorganics LOL. Its measurements are 140cm lenth, 71cm Hight and 20cm deep. We filled it right to the top, no leaks, but it will deffinetly need some sort of bracing as the glass at the top was bowing out quite a bit, enough to frighten us and empty it out quickly. So here is the tank and this is where I aim to use it. We will of course strengthen everything to be able to hold the tank. I want to put it above my fireplace just against the wall, not in the wall. This is my first time ever attempting anything like this. So could you guys please advice me if it will be worth it, or will it cost me an arm and a legg. My hubby is very handy with welding and that sort of thing, so that is not a problem. What type of fish would look nice, I take it, that it will have to be small fishies because of the depth. How heavy will this turn out, I know its 198litres from a volume calculator All in all I just need tons and tons of advice please, I feel super dumb in this whole process, I don't even know what questions to ask, but excited the same time :nilly:

Thanks, we got the idea from that new cat programme on animal planet

Our cats special cat tower we made her so she can survey over the lounge or snooze high up safe and sound from little hands Here she is giving us I love you eyes. Yes that is a saw in the background, we bought it at Clevedon farmers village to support an artist Roxy is stalking a pair of ducks that comes to eat bread from the kids everyday Nap time, but oh the sun is in her eyes Roxy loves my daughters, hand chair Watching a birdy I need to add a second bell to her collar, she figured out how to stalk and keep the one bell quiet. I don't like my house full of bird feathers
