  1. I could move them to their original home tank - in a net box so I can keep an eye on them... or too much shock?

Happy Birthday Anthony, I wish you the yummiest of cakes and the most whippiest of pavlovas for your special (AGING) day.... :happy2: so, 53 years old then...?
  3. and there is a mosquito larvae in there doing fine - I presume because it can breathe above the water level? :sml2: I will know they have recovered when the larvae gets chomped
  4. It's looking better in there - the fish that was having the most trouble has regained some control and is now up the right way, just a little bit sunken in the tail end. The other 4 vary from being a little better than that to moving about almost normally. Have swapped out another 5-6 litres. It's about a 25 litre tank. Will do another one before I go to bed and check them again in the morning. Poor fish. This was because I was trying to give them more room to by dividing the tank but do it in such a way to seal it well so as to keep the fry together. I think I will have to revert to using the original divider with the sucky cups and content myself with roaming fry. :an!gry
  5. I'll do another 40% change or so in a little while after dinner. They have an airstone and a box filter going so there is air pumping in at both ends, it seems like heaps in a little tank. The snails were already starting to perk up after the change, and so were a couple of the others - hopefully as it took a couple of days to take hold it's not TOO serious. will update shortly thanks for the quick replies too

well that's good. Just make sure you remember her birthday and give her more kisses than usual, who knows what else you can wheedle out of her while she's in this vulnerable state :digH:
  7. On Sunday afternoon I made a divider for the CPD breeding tank using existing aquarium safe perpex and lining the edges with rubber to make a good seal. Yesterday my 2 fry had disappeared and the adults were not very hungry and a little slow moving but not altered enough for me to take much notice. Just now I have found the snails are at the waterline and the adults are definitely sick - almost stationary except for an occasional flaring of the fins and not moving away when I look at them. One of them is floating about without much control of herself. So I have removed the offending rubber and done a 40% water change with stresscoat added. I have moved the airstone into the breeding box and circulated the fresh water around very well. I was worried about shocking them further so am not sure if I can do a full water change or not - need advice on what to do next please, other than to stop slapping my forehead like this  :-?
  8. so sweet! You must enter some of those in photo of the month, they are very clear photos.

Sounds like little Squirty knows how to make puppy dog eyes and Mum is a secret softie :slfg:
  10. JaSa you could drop the missus off at Onehunga Dressmart and then pop off to HFF Mt Roskill and Aqua Village, then pick her up and go visit the others. By the time you pick her up she could easily be all shopped out and then only have the strength to sit in the car and nap while you visit the others :sml2: Graham, there are a few buses that go down Mt Albert Rd past the end of Frost Rd but is probably easier to rely on your own transport than use a bus service in an area you don't know.
  11. I just do the sand in the bucket thing, rinse it lots and stir it up like Zuri08 said, and then wait for it to settle a bit before pouring off the water. When it's clear it's ready and I soup ladle it into the tank.
  12. Well you know there is such a thing as google maps . Not the best answer I realise but there are tools available.....Mt Roskill is quite difficult to explain. Probably best to drive out of town via Symonds St, head down Mt Eden Rd till you get to Three Kings/Mt Albert Rd intersection (waving to Josh at Animates when you go past), then turn right and go along Mt Albert Rd till you see Frost Rd on the left and it's at the bottom of the hill. If you don't know Auckland it's possibly more straightforward to visit the Albany branch as it's straight up the North Motorway to Albany, turn left at the roundabout and it's a little way down on the right.
  13. oh, and Josh works there :sml2:

the other thing that might work is to get something bigger length and width across the bottom but if practical make it a bit shallower so Turtle has more room to hang out but doesn't have more water volume so costs about the same to heat. That's what I did with the loach tank, didn't upsize depth wise but they got more space to zip about. That sort of tank might be a custom build though.
  15. as far as the change over goes, if you have a huge filter it will suck the cloudiness up probably overnight, if not you might need to carefully put the sand in to minimise the clouding and having sand on everything. My tanks are small so if I want to add more sand etc, I usually fill a soup ladle, gently fill it with water in the tank and then hold it steady to the bottom where I pour it out. You can probably do the same on a larger scale with a plastic jug or bucket.

maybe she will let you get something bigger than what you've got but smaller than that after she has cooled down and you have entered into negotiations...
  17. This is my order of preference on this side of the bridge : HFF Mt Roskill, AquaVillage in Neilson St Onehunga, Animates Mt Eden just in case they are having a special, and they have a nice display tank. Bird Barn in Henderson has some interesting stuff too and lots of other pets. On the other side of the bridge there's Aqua World in Glenfield, must see if you like saltwater. Then HFF Albany and Pupuke Aquarium centre in Birkenhead. My favourites are HFF Mt Roskill for range, price and good staff, Aqua World for interesting things to see and do and some good prices, BirdBarn for same reasons, and AquaVillage as he has fry of various ages so again is nice to go there.

That'll be why the others let you break the news to her... :spop: in fact, I wondered what the noise was earlier on, must have been your mum shouting at you :nilly:
