Finally got the 4ft up an running, been cycling for 3 days now. Filled it with water from my w/c's and used media from well established tanks to get the ball rolling faster. Plans for stock are 1x Fire Eel 1x common pleco 6x pictus catfish 1x senegal birchir 2x ornate birchir Im wanting to add another couple of fish to this list, I want something that spends alot of time near the surface. An oddball fish is best as the tank is already headed in that direction. Stocking calc's only problem was making sure tank was lidded for the fire eel, and there was driftwood for the pleco Any idea's?

Im currently setting up his large tank so he can grow out as big as he can, Im wondering what would be the absolute best substrate for a fire eel. Gravel is too course and heavy for digging. Silica sand is too sharp and scratchy River sand, which hes in now is the best Ive seen these guys in and hes loving it. But I cant help getting the feeling theres something better still, like a finer, softer, more mud or dirt like substrate. Any info or photos of them I get is in an aquarium, I presume being a river fish they have a fine sediment to dig in not unlike in alot of our larger rivers. I want to get the substrate as close to what he would have in his natural habbitat.

Lol, I know what you mean, trying to take a photo of one of my more shy fish but rams keep sticking their big heads in the way. Nice idea on the vinyl, black backgrounds are my fav, specially when I get nice algae growing on top of it. That whiptail keeps making me jelous, his tail string thingies are much much longer then mine.

yeah Im thinking something like would do the trick. As long as they are well faster then a fighter, because they can be cunning little snots. 50 ltr tanks, well established lots of plants, UGF. Ill be going away for 7 - 9 days at a time alot this year getting ranger experience, so no nasty mirror fish and no horrible blue bic pen's coming by to play a game of 'im stauncher then you'.
-
They both have a 50 ltr tank each, female has always lived with other fish, Zev has always lived alone. Recently I've moved alot of fish around and now both are on their own. They each have a baby BN but its not interesting to them at all. The female isnt her usual self, she mopes around and seems starved for attention, shes on a diet at the moment too, so she doesnt get to perform her jumping trick for visitors. Zev is acting similar, im not 100% suprised considering hes just recovered from terrible constipation and a swim bladder issue. But he too seems bored and lonley with life. They get the tank background pulled out from between their tanks some times so they can interact with each other but since yesterday they are not interested in each other at all. Just sit on opposite sides of the tanks avoiding being seen. I just wondering if they need something to chase, female used to love chasing my bolivians but they are either spawning or raising fry and got too intollerant of her and wouldnt leave her alone. Zev is a very aggressive lil man, I dont know what could be kept with him other then something he doesnt really know is there (the baby BN) but that still doenst solve the lonely problem. Guppies dont work, they both have a burning hatred for them. In the wild, do fighters have other fish species around? If so what kinds? I hate seeing any fish unhappy but these guys are really special. So any suggestions as to what I can do for them??

I think I mean the stick eels, they look kinda fuzzy tho as if theres some sort of fuzzy frill to them, they could have been plants in my eyes I WANT! -

WOW! What are those black things in the bottom pic? -
As long as your happy with that reality, the most important thing is to be happy with yourself, as long as you dont hurt anyone in the process dont let anything stand in the way of you happiness. Growing up means more conforming to what it means to be an adult, I love hanging out with my lil nieces and nephews, I can be a kid again!

hehe aww well the powerpoints I have a pc, tv, stereo, and 4 fish tanks with heaters/filters/lighting running off 1 powerpoint, multibox on multibox on multibox lol. As for tank stands, if you have, or know friends or family that have, those cinderblocks, they are strong/cheap and make great bases for tanks. And the room problem, you could try sleeping on the floor, removing the lounge suite or dining area
-
hehe yes sam give her your tanks! shes doing amazing work lol! we got a few month before a heater is needed anyways I think, well at least I do here, and my last place in aucks. Was hard to keep the room temp below 25'C

LOL Its sounding more and more like an aspect of my life where I havnt grown up yet haha! If I grow up then I wont be able to return to the land of make believe! I still have some yugi cards too, never knew how to play though. I'm currently looking for a publisher in japan to help me release me manga I wrote, based it on maori legends, its awesome! Look out for it in future, problem is its all in japanese at the moment, and hand drawn, once I get a scanner Ill post a saga or two up for reading.

Heheh yeah I guess if you dont understand then its not for you DBZ was a very famous manga (illustrated novel) in Japan. When its animated its called anime. Japanese verions of anime are usually alot more adult orientated. Infact, they watch more of them then the western world watches weekly drama/soaps. yugioh was american/japanese production, sorta the same, but then again not. Pokemon, as Kiwi's know it, was an english dubbed version of a shounen jump (anime for boys) edited for age group 8+ for a western audience, but its more authentic anime then Yugioh, if that gives you an idea. If you havnt seen good anime, watch the ghost in the shell movies, ninja scroll, evangellion, any of the gundam movies and you'll be sold. (thats if it fits your genre) Spirited away was also a famous anime that was english dubbed, although its not my scene, childrens or girly movie, but well written and drawn none the less.

Those splish splash fill with plants quickly specially with that black silica, mine has no lighting, no CO2, inidian fern and java fern goes nuts in there. Not alot of room for fishies
-
WOW! always blown away by your fighters! Love the dark purply one! Keep up the good work, and keep in mind, I still desperatey want a pinky blue female

good idea Sam, my experience is guppies need a fair bit of room and hiding places for the young to survive the male guppy. 100 ltr + really. Although, my 38 ltr I managed to get 10+ guppy fry survive with no intervention. The teeny fire eel ate his share tho. At the moment I have mine kinda cramped, well not cramped just not 100% ideal for breeding, I only get maybe 1 out of every 10 fry survive, lack of room and hiding places for them, I only let em breed for fire eel food tho so I need some control.

any less ? I thought it would make us more indervidual, well it depends how you look at it I guess. I think inderviduality is a good thing, it means one is comfortable with themself, and if they are honest with themselves then theres a very good chance they will be honest with you too. But your right as always LA, its amazing how different people come up with the same solution to a problem through completely different ways. P44 thanks for that info, I wasnt aware there was other terms, I was tested young for dislexia and put in "cabbage" class all through school, with the exception of biology aced that one. Also, sorry about a post I made in another topic, that may have sparked this thread, I most likely snapped a bit This topic is great, as it was unfair of me to snap, I should have been more involved in helping them understand why some people have difficulty spelling rather then getting worked up about it. So apologies all round

can only comment on corys, mine breed excessively in 100+ ltrs, never seen them spawn in less.

This wouldnt be a bad thread to keep going. I have a snail issue. My tanks I dont have plecs get full of them, others they still hang in their but plecs eat too much of the snails food. The tanks that and riddled with snails are too small for plecs, or loaches. I have the cucumber in there and pull out 15+ snails daily, I was seriously thinking about getting some puffers or something to eat em all up, specially in the AR380 it would look beautiful if snails wernt eatin all my plants.

Mine effects me more when it comes to leaving my body, for example, school cert maths, 48% both years I tried. All my answers correct, the way id written down my working was wrong, most cases Id just put numbers back to front. My sirname is spelt Riedl, I often write down reidl, its not that I dont know how to spell it, something goes wrong on the way out lol. I have a piece of paper some where too, not the best confidence booster lol. Good idea throwing this up Caryl, dyslexia is nothing to feel ashamed about, some of our greatest minds have been dislexic, its a different way of thinking, I think of it as a gift.

Managed to get some of Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish, bought 2f 1m but plan to go back and get another 6f and 1 more male, they look so nice schooling. These were an excellent suggestion, they're always active and almost love being chased by the other fish, Im sure I even caught the male provoking one of the kribs to chase it, very cute. Just wanted to say thanks, so.. Thanks

Your not wrong at all there matey, I think the biggest part in his recovery is that he has been comfortable and happy. Over the past few days hes been pooing alot, I havnt fed him, and his tummy is getting slightly smaller every day, because the tummy is flatter, his swim bladder has relaxed too, so that bump over the swim bladder is normal, apart from the scales still sticking out a little but I presume this wil return to normal with time. When I do feed him its small amounts of flake, colur enhancing seems to have to most fibre out of anything I have so he gets a tiny bit of that and a tiny bit of shelled pea, he'll take epsom salt crystals orally so Ive been giving him 1 of those a day too. Thank you very much to you all, its really nice to know there are other people out there with genuine concern for a little life, Im sure all the well wishing has played a part in his recovery.
