  1. Thanks for all the support, Im sure its helping it his recovery. hes doing great today, every day is huge improvement from the previous. Got in the pool all by himself for a swim and spent most of the morning preening. I had thought about the moulting it its a big possibility, the problem was his location, generally they burrow as a last resort if there is no where else to hide, Matata is a huge long, very busy beach, not a good place for a little guy like kahu. Especially in the condition he was in, if the gulls didnt get him then a dog sure would. exhaustion and very skinny so nothing a few days rest with some good food wont cure. Aside from talking all night every night, only stopping for 4 - 6 mins sleep before another 3 hours talking as well as power pooing a fishy smelling mixture 3/4 of a meter away from his bed on the carpet, god bless rug doctor! to that, we need to clone them tho, they are spread to thin. It can be a tricky situation with all the laws and things, lucky I had Mark and Caroline but it would not have changed my mind had I not known them. About 4 years ago I was walking my dog on the beach and I noticed a gannet sitting on the beach out the in open, I approached it and just like Kahu it made no effort to defend itself. But being weary of the laws, I decided against taking action myself and called DOC. About 20 minutes later a dog chomped it, Ive never gotten over that. DOC arrived about an hour after that, scooped up the mangled corpse and left. From then on I decided that I wouldnt let anything like that happen again.
  2. First of all hello again to all, its been some times since Ive posted on here or even had a look around. Hope everyone has been keeping well and you all had a great xmas and new years. Now on to Kahu's story... I was fishing with my brother at Matata beach on saturday night, it was getting towards evening time and we were looking forward to great fishing on the change of light. We set up a spot near a tuatua bed and got under way. The beach was busy, there were lots of dogs, fishermen, long liners, and fishing boats not too far off the shore. As I was looking around I noticed a little bluish blacky thing sitting just out of the water, there were big black back gulls making a hell of a noise around it. I thought it was a fish carcass and went to check the possible free bait that was waiting for me. When I got closer though I noticed it wasnt bait, but a little blue penguin. I approached it slowly and it made to attempt to escape or defend itself. I realised the poor little thing would no doubt die out here on the big open beach all alone, as tired as it was it would make no effort to run from the ever approaching dogs. I made the choice to do something to help him, so I slowly covered him with a towel, picked him up and moved him to where our gear was. Things seemed pretty hopeless at first, so I kept it covered with the towel and kept things quiet so he could just relax without any fear. When i arrived home I tried feeding him but I had no success, by this time though it was about 10:30pm at night so I decided to just let him sleep some where quiet for the night. The next morning I took him down to living art to see what is best to do to try help him get back on his feet. Caroline and Mark had great advice as usual, he got some food down him and a swim in the salt water pond, but soon got tired and just wanted to retreat back to somewhere dark and quiet. Today hes a different bird, I dont need to force feed him, hes alert, can give a fair nip if he wants to, and had a much longer swim. I dont think it will be too long and he can go back into the wild all strong and healthy, and carry out his life. He still tires out very quickly, but if he keeps up with progress from yesterday, Im sure he'll be back out in the deep blue sea catching fish in no time. I feel its very important to try and help creatures such as Kahu in their time of need, and Im hoping by sharing my experience, it may help others if they ever encounter a similar situation in the future. This past few days have been a real eye opening experience for me, its something I will remember forever. I'm looking forward to his return to the ocean, as much as I'll be sad to see him swim away, I want nothing more then for him to return to his life as if nothing really happened, happy, healthy and full of spirit. Ive got a few pics of him, the quality isnt great but it gives an idea at least, my computer is still not working right so Im using a laptop for the night, Ill try update this for anyone who wants to know how hes doing.

  8. WHAT!!!! LOL you mean hes acually as scarey as he tries to be?
  9. Should really make a new topic for these I guess, These are the best I can get of the bestest fighter there ever was or will be
  10. I can send you a plant with a fair few snails there, they will all be small too, as I dont let them live to a point where fish wont eat them. Pm me if you like, they came on my Cabomba so Ill send ya some of that with snails, Its all clean as this way at least, I let them grow in one tank, as emergency algae cleaners, but they never get bigger then maybe 2 - 4 mm before I get rid of them. There are much biggers ones living and loving it in my Daphnia tank though, but I get more breeding from the smaller ones that sneak around in my tanks. Let me know, Ill post em to ya no probs, festive season too, I can spare a few bob for another fish enthusiast
  11. Thanks Jenni! and im sure the Pun was some what intended ! at least I hope so because my stale sense of 80's humor is still laughing lol. Put it this way, spent 4 hours last week with a friend who was bored to tears in the first 10 mins, trying to photograph my fighters jumping for food from my hands, and the ol kissy fishy! I think a big hairy bogan receiving a kiss from a tiny fishy is like melt the heart material, at least my gf thinks so lol.
  12. Well thats where I made sure I was saying if you want purely a cell phone, for calling and texting, then nokia or SE. But if its doing much much more then that I really dont know, Samsung seem to be up there in the market for a reasonable price, but this is technology I really dont have time for....If you want a Phone, for calling and Text, my statement still stands, old nokia or SE. If your after the everything in the palm of your hand then I really dont know, none so far are reasonably priced to withstand a bushmans lifestyle
  13. Thanks Sam, as that webby was a huge inspiration for the photography but I lost the link. Either way, specially reading this, its either a fault of the camera, or much more likely a fault of the user. Once photobucket pulls finger Ill post a few more here, All of Zevvy, but he deserves only the upmost attention anyways, hes a nationwide celebrity fish! Naaah lol, just a FNZAS celeb but hes my special guy, and I would love to have some great pics of him, I cant produce them myself so Im wanting help. Pixiphoto said they can garuantee good photos for $800, thats about $780 more the I can afford
  14. Damselfies are like Dragonflies though, the larvae are easily distinguished as they are highly predatory and look the part for the job they are suited.
  15. Hmm yea my experience is bloodworms are mozzies, midgies breed out of water I think. If they are mozzies, shortly before they turn into full blown mozzies, they will get kind of a white fuzz on the head, they will wriggle with more purpose and try find the surface, you can see them start to split as they feel the pressure difference the closer they are to the surface. They are red and kind of silvering just before hatching, if they were mozzie larve I think you would have seen this by now. Its hard to catch the metamorphesis but you should see the newly developed mozzies on the surface and a silverly clear husk left floating near by.
  16. my room smells bad since I got fishies spawning, infusoria stinks, like a sweet kinda sick smell.

    Some pics

Looking forward to seeing what you get Adodge! Keep us posted!
  18. Hehe I know what you mean there exactly, and Zev is about the best model Ive seen as far as fish are concerned. 7 MP is far far beyond this 3.2. He'll pose like that for a few mins and loves picking on those nasty cameras, that pic is 799 out of about 1300 I took that afternoon Its the best one! My fish are so tame they are perfect models, even my bol ram Marco, in all his fathering duties, will bring the babies up front for a chance at more attention then the other fish, getting a photo how ever is a completly different story. Ive tried every option possible on the camera, at every time of day/night. Without flash there is limited colour and even more limited detail. With a flash the background is missing, and blackness shrouds everything not in focus. All I want is a clear pic like the one I just posted here, when hes looking at me, 800 pics of one fish with very little winnings
  19. Size of the tank wont outside wont be alot different to a smaller thank, the larger the tank the larger the surface area exposed to external resourses.
  20. I think if the worms are causing the lck of flow then maybe you do need to do something. Is there alot of algae in the tank? or alot of left over food? Those worms need to be thriving off something, and obviously, your fish are well fed, so perhaps the worms are a result of overfeeding? (dont worry this is something Im very bad for, specially during spawning) The whole lawn thing has confused me a lil sorry, (been drinking tonight), is this a tank or a pond? And what do you mean by rinsing on the lawn? I wash my filters only in tank water or the Daphnia tank outside. I get numerous Mozzie larvae in my tanks though, but i keep a portion unlidded for just such a purpose as my fighters and guppies love the live food. Also how much plant life is in your tank, for example. My snail stowaways havnt been able to get a foodhold because of the plants efficient work. Do these worms live souly in the substrate and filters? Or do they freely move about the tank? Have you seen where they congregate? Mainly around sources of algae, food or waste? Perhaps the bacteria in your filters isnt quite coping with the resourses, so something else has founds a niche Remember Im NOOBIE!
  21. Im looking for someone to take some pics of my fish/tanks for me, This is not for any photo of the month or any competitions, purely for me and my family/friends enjoyment. As the photographer you will have all rights to the photos. Ill just be making xmas cards and framing a couple. My camera just doesnt cut it! E.G. below Just imagine if I had a slightly decent camera My Baby Boy Zevvy! Isnt he the cutest!
  22. Id watch the worms closely, see if they are a larvae for something else, or that is their final form.
  23. You dont have a garage to consider? Im moving all my tanks bar 1 to the garage next week, hows this, I sold my targa tuned 81 golf gti, not for the money, for space for blinking fish! What on earth is happening to me, there should be a vacine for MTS Im blaming all of you! lol but thanking you at the same time!
  24. If I were you I would stay with either nokia or sony ericsson, and usually, when TSP's provide cheaps phones its because they have lots left of a model no one wants. If you dont use pix and video phoning, if you have a camera already, I wouldnt go there tbh. Better off with something more fuctional and reliable, nothing beats the ol nokia BL range, 10 years and still in production, must say something. Dont fix what isnt broken!
  25. Eww! I have had, lately, bloodworms, well mosquito larvae thriving and hatching in my tank (ones without fighters), but they have never grown to that size. That hook makes them look kinda parasitic too Im very very interested to see what these are, Talking with a lps owner the other day he was telling me about a species of worm that acually helps tanks with ugf, as they further break down rotting food and poo. And as poor as my memory serves me I think it was some kind of australian worm. While we are on the topic of worms, potentially is there much harm to be done from fish eating local live bloodworms or mozzies? I really couldnt control it if I tried, aside from netting my tanks, but my fish love the hunt for the fresh mozzie or newly hatch larvae, and NZ is reletively free of disease as far as I know.
