  1. They look good to me, definetly not skinny. They look happy too, you've done nothing wrong, he will have just thrown them in his tank without acclimatizing them properly. I think the only thing you can do it let him know what steps to take when he gets new fish in the future, so this doesnt happen again.
  2. Unfortunetly I couldnt get this to record, so I havnt managed to upload any videos. I will have a good scour around later for it. tvnz on demand wont have it uploaded untill later this afternoon, and that will be the entire show.
  3. Thanks for the concern smidey, checked it with a strait edge, its good. Will still add the cinders, better safe then sorry as they say. But 3 of us stood in the middle and bounced around a but before putting the tank on, its solid as. Always pays to be sure with this kinda thing tho huh. Made a budget reflector and light stand, added lots more plants too. Bad pic but gives a rough idea.
  4. Yeah its new, was $25 so I thought I would be still a good buy. There is an old rimu headboard between the tank and the saw horses, its solid as, got some cinder blocks arriving next week as extra strength in the centre although Im certain its more then strong enough.
  5. Got a light today for really cheap, tube it came with was a sylvania gro-lux f18w/gro * High level of blue and red radiation helps promote healthy plant growth * Strengthens the natural colours of aquatic plants and fish in aquariums Anyone used one of these before? Im not sure on any of the specs, looking for it all now.
  6. I can acually see this being a problem for me in future, there is no way I can stay detached from my fish, and sadly things die eventually even if they are in the absolute best of care. Having a huge love for all the creatures on this planet really is a double edged sword.
  7. He looked to have recovered from his constipation and swim bladder issue, then suddenly went very quickly downhill, wouldnt eat, just lay around on the bottom of the tank, all his spirit was gone. Possibly his internal organs were damaged from having a fat tummy, personally I think he just gave up. Perhaps L.A. can answer this better.
  8. My little boy Zevvy has been down with L.A. for a few days, last night it was decided it was best he be put to sleep. I stayed strong all day but im a bit soggy now its sunk in. Good bye my lil man, rest in peace.
  9. Well thats one night down, couldnt find any eels on the floor this mornin, mind you, I couldnt find him in the tank either but he'll be there. I figure, he only tries to get out when there isnt enough suitable hiding places. Grabbing a class cutter this morning so the lids should be all Iggy proof in a few hours.
  10. Sure do Stella, I was very suprised. I put about 8 of them and some guppies in my 4ft to help it cycle. Woke up in the morning to about 30 guppy fry. I decided to try count them all when I noticed one of the shrimp sitting high up on the driftwood, as I looked closer I seen he was eating something, as I looked closer still I could see what he was eating was moving. It was a guppy fry alright, poor wee thing still wriggling its tail as its head was being dismantled.
  11. Mine love hiding in the indian fern and cabomba, and they eat anything that comes within grabbing range, from frozen bbs to live guppy fry (which was really need to watch) I rarely see them on the substrate, usually on driftwood, rocks and plants. Im not sure what my flow is like, cf700 in 4ft tank, in the quarantine tank, flow is alot more, didnt seem to bother them, they are good swimmers.
  12. GES lamps put out very little heat and are recommended for propagation & breeding stock. thats good news, I had an old grow light I used when I was into carnivorous plants, it was like having a mini sun in my shed, I had the police turn up thinking I was growing something I shouldnt, they said my shed showed up on the thermal imager in the helicopter. $185 is a little steep though it is a very nice setup, specially that its marine blue. Im sure you could achieve the same or similar for less, with a lil more DIY.
  13. OMG! I LOVE SMOKED TROUT!!!! I havnt had it for years, pay all that money for a license then I dont catch diddly squat!

    New Fish!

Are discus aggressive feeders like angels?
  17. knife's (would I say knife's for a fish rather then knives? {confusing lisdexia}) are from southeast asia too aint they? Would be a nice biotope with some Bala, knife and a fire eel. I wonder if some larger loaches could avoid being eaten too.
  18. Thanks Barrie, and I understand completely about having the "quick" smoker. But money is always an issue, $60 might not be alot to most people but thats about what i get a week left from bills without considering diesel, any fish needs, dog food and internet. Those mussels sound yummy, Ill have to get some for my Nan she'd kill for those. Thanks bro, helps heaps that you mentioned the wildpork, I know exactly what to do now. I've done about 30 hangi to date, though last year at a party someone "accidently" took my rocks home. They we're about as old as me too, I remember getting them when I was about 7 yrs old, so thats a good 20 years Id had them. You must have some rellies in Kauwerau then? I grew up there and around, Dad still lives there.
  19. Wow Ive never seen him more active, he seems very happy! Ive been trying to get pics but hes shooting around at about 100 mph checking things out and hunting down guppy fry.
