  1. oops my post went in twice so I'm editing it !
  2. I just use mafia wars.. I found the others too monotonous sorry.
  3. ok thanks.. I'll just carry on with the salted water and increase to daily water changes. I have acriflavine and furan if things start to get worse. I hate using meds unless I really have to. re food.. what would you suggest? He's been getting tetramin tropical flakes and decap brine shrimp. I have frozen bloodworms if you think he needs more protein, and nutrafin max shrimp flakes.
  4. what colour are the mollies?

    King Killi

neat looking fish. I almost started out with Killi but daughter wanted betta more than killi and well the two just wouldn't mix I suspect!!!
  6. MY golden girl guppy decided she'd had enough of the male and took some bites from his tail. It looks quite tattered . I didn't see it happen but i have observed her chasing him the few days before the torn tail. I don't want the tail to get worse or develop into finrot so what is the best treatment for this?.. I have taken him out and put him in a lightly salted quarantine tank (2teaspoons to 20L) with some stress coat. He's been there 5 days and has not got worse but doesn't seem all that happy, not as active as he used to be . Will the tail grow back? I'm changing some water every second day to keep it extra clean for him.. it has been cycled with platy fry and there's still a few left in with him.

    King Killi

Do you have a photo of him Barrie?, I'd love to see a pic
  8. I'm not sure what is wrong with your goldfish as they are not my specialty lol, we only had them for a few months before giving away and getting tropicals... .. I'm still learning about tropicals. But i do believe Goldfish prefer a higher pH .. more alkaline., .. perhaps the drop in pH has stressed them.

    School holidays

can't wait till Easter... it brings the start of the school holidays and also my birthday! I work at a primary school also (Teacher aide) so the hols are great... don't even have to do much planning like the teachers do. Hoping to get a couple more betta settled over the hols.
  10. that's amazing.. what a survivor. I've had newborn platy fry buried under gravel for a week that when found was so skinny I thought could not possibly survive, but did and is the most beautiful of my platy today!
  11. well nothing came of that pairing. One of the females must have got sick of that male becuase he got a peice of tail bitten off! The female platy was just plump I guess... have since cut back the food a bit.
  12. thanks everyone! your replies have given me the confidence to give it a go. I forgot to mention we also have an HRV system but I'm pretty sure the previous owners also had a robocan working. My tanks are am AR380 and a hexy blue planet and a splish splash in the office.
  13. thanks heir.. our tanks are covered although the lids do have air slits in them (all in one hooded tanks) .. how well covered are your tanks? I have done a quick google and have got conflicting info.. most sites say not to use around fish tanks but some fishkeepers are reporting they do use it. Our tanks are in the main rooms not far from where the robocan would be. (open plan)
  14. OK.. well we have moved and I am now back online. Anyway... I would like to use some form of fly control that I can just forget about it. Before fish we used to get the house treated with a mist of ripcord but am wanting to use Raid Robocan this time round... is it safe for use with fish and birds?? Can anyone here vouch that they have used it with no problems.. thanks in advance., I need to get onto this soon! I used to be hesitant about using robocan because I didn't like the thought of breathing it in on a constant basis... but the flys have got the better of me so am willing to look at options!

    TEMPS

mine got up to around 29oC, a rotating large fan has helped a lot.
  16. I have a little snakeskin male guppy who has taken a real interest in a young platy female. I am sure I saw him mate her more than once too! Is this normal? will anything come of it? She's lookign rather plump now and is the only platy in the tank and was raised from a fry in there because she was trapped in the gravel for up to a week in the other tank so I removed her to quarantine and then put her in with the guppies so she wouldn't breed. She's a good size now but still young. There are enough female guppies in the tank (4 females, 2 males) but no - he wants the platy!

    tanks and HRV

we're told it's a HRV but we'll check when we move in. It is what it is and it's not a heatpump so just need to work with the existing setup. Heating is gas.

    tanks and HRV

thanks. I'm looking forward to a drier home and maybe even an improvement in my allergys.
  20. Our new place has an HRV system (heat recovery ventilation) which will be new to us. Do these affect the tanks much? Those of you with an HRV system, can you tell me what sort of maintenance is needed on them and do filters need replacing etc? The system if it's as old as the house would be about 4 years old. We're moving in next month.
  21. cool, thanks for taking him Sam. I'm sure he's going to be really happy now. He will probably lose that blotchiness overnight wheh he settles down. He can change his colouration and pattern daily! Thanks for sharing a pic!
  22. got your message Sam check your inbox, can do tonight or tomorrow morning. :-)
  23. Hi Sam, that would be great. Where abouts are you? we might be able to bring him around tomorrow if you were available. My daughter just wants to find him a new home but doesn't want any more BNs because we might end up with the same problem in another few months!
  24. that's what I was wondering. My daughter is worried he will hurt the Kuhli and is wanting to rehome him.. which is why i came on to ask opinions. Could he kill them? If anyone would like to take him let me know. I'm not in a position to start a bigger tank just yet. We're in Wattle Downs, Manurewa but could possibly drop off if local -ish. We thought he would help algae control but it's still all over the glass anyway. The idea was we would have him in there until he gets too big and then put him into our planned bigger tank (which hasn't happned yet) or swap for a smaller BN. ... he's grown quite fast though! Our tank is just an AR380 .. so maybe it's already too small for him?
  25. Sam, is that your betta in the pic? he's very nice!
