  1. We are shifitng next month so don't really want to add any more fish and I won't have the room for another BN anyway. But if the consensus is that he needs a female we would look at doing something at the next house and get my bigger tank sooner rather than later. Have had to use the tank budget to fix the sons Les Paul guitar so having to save up again! It's very odd and comical and I haven't heard of this before, it's almost as if he thinks he is a kuhli and he will sit on them sometimes. I just don't think the kuhli appreciate it!
  2. I have had my 3 kuhli and BN together in the same tank since April. (along with a few guppies) Over the last couple of months the BNs bristles have become more prominent and he sometimes has his ododontals out. But now, every evening when one particular Kuhli comes out lookign for food, he immediately goes over to it and tries to swim with it, quite funny when the kuhli is doing his/her figure 8's and the darn BN is trying to go with it. The Kuhli gets a bit fed up and goes back into hiding. I wondered if the BN was just being friendly but now he tries to hog the food as well.. is he being territorial , should I shift him to another tank or look at rehoming him ? The Kuhlis are becoming more shy. I don't have room or the inclination to try and put a female with the BN. is he lonely?

    Fly Control

we're moving next month so don't want to bother with the expense of flyscreens but i was worried abotu using flyspray. I have been using tiny amounts in the kitchen but not in the lounge where the tanks are. Our small home is open plan so was worried about spray drift into the tanks. In previous years we have sprayed the long term surface spray (ripcord) onto the the ceilings but it would be a mission to move the tanks for the application, even though they are only small.

    Fly Control

What do other people do to keep flys under control when there are tanks (and birds) in the room?
  6. maybe another 1-2 female guppies to give the gals a break - those male guppies are relentless!
  7. I used JBL filter start with one of my new tanks and never saw any spikes either
  8. oh that's awful.. i had that happen 20 years ago and it put me off fish keeping .. till recently. I think in my case water got in to the heater.

    Quarantine?

my very first guppy had callamanus worms and it didn't show up till the third week. By the time I noticed the threads he was unwell and don't last while I waited for the medicine to arrive by mail order. .. then i had the tedious task of treating the rest of the tank for several doses to make sure it was clear. by the time the worms showed they were already releasing eggs. I haev quarantined each and every fish since then for min 4 weeks and dose any live bearers for callamanus if they're from a petshop.

the other tanks are a similar size , and contain fighter, small whiptail, two platy and a quarantine tank filled with young fry .

the 3 kuhli are in a small aquaone tank (34L) .. so it would be ok to leave them in that? that would simplify! Just have a bristle nose which we might rehome and four guppy also in that tank which could be bagged fairly easily.
  13. yes, that is why i thought i would ask first. JAE has a good name generally but I wanted to check up on the specific product fibergaurd which is advertised to do the same thing as soilguard. I was quoted $260 vs $414 so that's a huge difference, was just wondering if Harvey Norman was just putting on a huge markup for essentially the same product. I'm sure the don't apply it themselves so if I can find someone to do it for me and cut out the middle man .. it's quite a big savings to me . Was hoping to get bigger tank in the new house so trying to save $ wherever we can so we can still make it happen. Barrie, my husband sells high end solid timber flooring so i totally get where you are comign from with $$ vs quality and longevity. People just are not going to get a solid timber product for a veneer or vinyl price lol.

ok,. thanks for the replies. We're moving just a few streets over so the fish won't be too long in bags and containers hopefully. The chiliibin sounds like a good idea.. do they splash around much though? Wondering if I should bag them in the chillibin or just have them in water only. It's going to be fun trying to catch those Kuhli!!

    moving soon

we are moving homes in January and I will have to consider how to move the fish. Staying in the same suburb, so that's a plus but what advice can you give me on how best to go about it.
  16. Buying a new lounge suite and got a quote from JAE services that as a lot cheaper than what Harvey Norman quoted me. Has anybody used JAE fiber guard? ... is it as good as Soilguard offered by HN ? Every bit of savings will help right now!
  17. i use the non hatching decaps for guppy and platy fry . They love it and it's light so doesn't all sink to the bottom. My whiptail and kuhli clean up the rest. Brings them out of hiding every time. I soak the decaps for just a few minutes before feeding to fry, 3-4 times day for the first week and then I scale it back and start substituting with crushed flakes. By 3 weeks they just get the crushed flakes with the occasional decaps.
  18. where abouts are you? I'd be interested in buying some offspring if you're in Auckland. I have been looking for a nice male red or blue tux.
  19. thanks cesarz the one I have that's going back tomorrow is similar to your one on left ( with a humpback of course) but he has black side fins and his tail is full red.
  20. wow they are sooo beautiful! did you breed them yourself?
  21. well i've only ever treated the amount being changed , but then again I treat it before it goes into the tank . I like the idea that you turn off the filter during the change so at least teh bio will fare better until the dechlorintaor does it's thing. It would get expensive to treat the entire tank each time and it seems pointless dechlorinating water that is already dechlorinated. But perhaps it makes a difference when the water is being added straight to the tank before treatment.
  22. if you mean monochloromine, stress coat removes that too. "removes chlorine & CHLORAMINES"
  23. well we have decided to take him back to the breeder and keep lookign around for a red tux elsewhere. Will just be easier starting with a straight back! Just wondering though, what would my yellow tail tux and neon blue female produce? Could I get neon tuxedos from that mix?
  24. oh well.. have talked to my daughter and we're going to take the fish back and look elsewhere for a red tux.. our very first guppy was a beautiful red tux and he kind of set the bar for what we want! pity he came with callamanus worms from animates!
