  1. probably time for a vet check.. at that age she will need more regular checkups. Any sort of blood in the number 2's should be checked out - just in case.
  2. what would you call the colouring on that? he's gorgeous
  3. In NZ a few years back someone bit the head off a pet mouse in front of the kid.. now that is sick!
  4. there were 18 members this morning when I checked, and now there are 32 . Good to put faces to some of the names.
  5. Caryl... it has it's own page. 7. i recently joined facebook and was having a look around. I found the FNZAS page and wondered how many active members here are on there. There's only about 18 joined the facebook group.
  8. what sort of fry are they? do you have any other reason to believe they have flukes? I think fry will grow at different rates becuase some are more aggresisve at getting their food than others!
  9. fast him for a day then give him a chopped pea (deshelled) ! My betta would keep eating too if I let him.
  10. there's something special about the classic VT though , i think they're rather graceful.

    Whiptail ID

cool , thanks. I bought his as a black whiptail. He won't accept any vegetable matter at all.. have given him zucchini, peas, pumpkin, carrot, silver beet, brocolli, - won't touch any of it. As soon as i feed the baby platys brine shrimp eggs he's out scrounging! And that's the only thing I'ver actually seen him eat. (besides putting holes in the plant) .

    Whiptail ID

Can you ID this whiptail for me.. I know what it was sold as but I was wondering what other people think .. He does have a long thready bit at the end of his tail but its not showing well in the photo. That plant in the background left was nice and healthy until the whiptail, came and made it his home and is slowly eating through the leaves - maybe that was just coincidence, maybe I don't have enough light. The whiptail won't accept any other vege matter and loves decaps brine shrimp eggs.
  13. i think my male has an egg spot too .. but he must be almost 8 months old now. Blurry photo but you can just make it out: and here's a non blurry photo but you can't see the egg spot in these pics.. but i wanted to show he was def male:
  14. aaaw the Cambodian is pretty , it's what we are looking for
  15. the very first guppy I ever got developed a bad case of callamanus 3 weeks after I got it .. it was going into a tank without any fish so was unquarantined and must have come already infected from the LFS. But after that I have avoided LFS for my fish .. they are a last resort.. but i did get two platy from a LFS and quarantined them for 4 weeks. From now on, 4 weeks is my quarantine period for livebearers .. just to be sure. I would tend to setting up a separate small tank if you can and if space is available. I would worry about cross contamination otherwise.. even a drop of water can spread worms around! Could so easily happen during a water change in the little floating 2L.
  16. cool - thanks for that. We'll keep our eye open for one then, are they more expensive than normal veil tails?
  17. My daughter is wanting a female fighter for her guppy tank and likes the look of the Cambodian but I think i remember something about them being more aggressive than your avg fighter.. Our sweet and quirky red girl has passed away and my daughter wasn't going to replace her but decided the tank just isn't right without a fighter in it.

    Sore Betta?

my female betta is now looking like that - maybe worse ! I quarantined her about 10 days ago because she had a broken ventral fin and was looking a little patchy. 1 week with added salt and she was doing great then yesterday her body condition looked worse with more patchiness and it looks like she's been eaten by something! Just like the picture of Sams betta. I added acriflavine yesterday, today she is worse and didn't want to eat. She has wedged herself above the top suction cup of the heater so she can get air more easily and I don't think she's going to make it :-( Before I euth her I want to know if Bettas can make a recovery after looking so near death or is she pretty much a goner now? I do have furan but will it be too much after just being in an acriflavine bath for 2 days. I pulled up this thread becuase I wanted to compare notes and look at Sams girl again.. and yep almost the same - so that will give you a reference to look at.
  19. "Blue circle" white spot cure is what I hear recommend the most , though I haven't had the need to try it myself. My betta is developing a different problem which I'm not sure how to treat.. in the quarantine tank with salt for a week but she's looking worse.. white patchy bits and a few loose scales. It looks like a little fish took a few tiny bites out of her but there's no fish in with her. Acriflavine??
  20. there is Life but not as we know it! hehe.. I'm actually from the BOP myself but somehow ended up in Auckland.
  21. I had lovebirds yearsagoand one got free and flew away..cat found it and bought in back to us .. lifeless :-( We did get another lovebird and they didn't get on near as well...but i thinkit was better that the one remaining had company.
  22. at what age can you tell male and female apart? are they like guppies and the males slowly grow a gonopdium from one of their fan fins? Any other tell tale signs because I can't detect a gravid spot on the adult female.. let alone looking for one in fry!
  23. get similar sized girls if you can. My males always go after the biggest girls.
  24. haha cool aye. You'll probably find that after a few pen flares he'll start to do the same to your finger too.
  25. my male betta doesn't need a mirror to flare although it does get a feistier response. He flares at my finger on the glass and follows it along , the whole time flaring.. and the end of a bic pen works equally well (the click bit part) .. especially a black one! - I got that trick from an obscure site about betta training.. it's a makeshift "angry stick" .. people who fight their bettas (bad them!) get a stick with a black dot on the end and train their betta to flare up on demand.. so I got a black pen and got an instant response from mine.. weird aye!
