  1. Apparently I had an bacteria bloom (or something) in the tank, with some stuff from the petshop this cleared overnight and the tank is crystal clear now, just purchased 6 tiger barbs and there sweeeeet!
  2. Thanks for all the replies, the tank is still misty and this does not seem to disappear. What should I do? Some say to do a water change, which I did on Sunday morning. It did not make any difference if you ask me. Every morning the first thing I do is look at the tank to see if the mist is gone but it hasn't.
  3. Hi Sunbird, thanks for that. Today the tanks seems less cloudy. I think by tomorrow it should be fine. It seems its getting clearer from the bottom upwards.. could also be my imagination though..
  4. Hi thanks for the great replies, I have turned down the outlet of the pump just a little bit because I can see the water flow gushing out of the outlet, the intake outlet is higher up the tank then it was before so I hope that is helping. Would it really help wrapping the intake with wool? I mean you want to get rid of the misty water so it has to go into the intake to filter it.. sorry if it is wrong what am saying am just a complete amateur..
  5. Hi Guys and Gals, :bounce: am a real newbie but wanted to ask some questions to the experts. I bought a hexagonal tank not so long ago (It is about 100 liters). 2 days ago I decided it was time to fill it up. I went to the pet shop and got all sorts of thing. I used fertilizer for the bottom then gravel (very fine black stuff) I washed everything by the way first. I filled it up a little so I could plant all the plants. In the process of filling it up completely I think I disturbed the fertilizer and the tank was mainly brown all day. Even with the pump running (Aqua One 1000 something) overnight it did not make any difference the next day. So I decided to siphon most of the water out yesterday morning, I left just enough water for the plants. I then put another fine layer of gravel down, firmly pressed everything down. Then I filled the tank up very slowly.. this took about an hour.. And since yesterday morning the tank looks white misty. The pump has been running ever since but even this morning it does not look any different then when I went to bed last night. Is this a normal thing for the tank to do? Am I impatient that I want to have it crystal clear?? How long would it take before it becomes clearer? Picture: http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b42 ... nk/001.jpg
  6. Just to let you all know it is clean! Water and a little bit of bleach went a long way. rinsed it thoroughly and dried out. ready to set up soon!!
  7. Gosh thanks so much for your replies! I will start cleaning the tank tomorrow, probably add water and start scrubbing, then let siphon everything out and repeat the process..
  8. My wife is pi**ing herself laughing after she saw that I had asked if you can buy elbow grease at the supermarket! In my defense, I am Dutch, never heard the saying "elbow grease". LOL
  9. Thanks for the speedy replies, I got it of Trade Me, it is a hexagonal tank.. just did a rough calculation and it is about 130 liters. Can you get elbow grease at the supermarket? And yes I want to kill any bacteria left in the tank! Am gonna start all over.
  10. Hi Guys, Sorry it is probably asked many times before but what is the best way to clean a secondhand tank I bought over the weekend? The tank is quite a big one, don't know how many liters, it has a lot of soap scum on the glass and algae and it stinks!! The guy admitted he had neglected it. I have read many pages after I googled it with some suggesting vinegar and other detergent, others say to get some stuff at the pet shop. What do you guys recommend?? Mark
  11. It seems to work and he is happily swimming today. He did eat some peas so lets wait for a while what he is going to do.. thanks for all the reply's
  12. Hey thanks so much for your reply, the fish get "Nutrafin Max" which I got from the pet shop, these are just dry flakes. Am looking at the fish at the moment and now that the light is off he is actually swimming. I will give him boiled peas in the morning and see if this clears it up in the next couple of days. How long should I keep feeding him these peas... and do you recommend other food I can give the fish? I only have goldfish. I do not know what he got fed before I got him as it was a fish from the pet store.
  13. So when they have swim bladder they are constipated... right? It sounds gross but his poop is sort of slimy! I will try to feed him some pees.. Does that cure him?
  14. Yeah, I wondered if it was that. Thanks, much appreciated.
