  1. yes I know.. but they pretty much have a gravid spot all the time as once one lot are releasd , the next lot are already developing. my females only stay clear in their gravid area for a few short days before the gravid spot is dark again and 3-4 weeks later I have new babies. So what I am saying is they will look gravid almost all of the time. It's not a good indication of how soon the babies are due. One of mine gives birth every 3 weeks. They get a very boxy square shaped front in the last few days and you'll see a white birthing canal when the drop is imminent. Separate the female when she is looking very heavy or starting to stay away from the other fish. She may swim up and down the sides of the tank if she is stressed or looking for some peace and quiet.
  2. could be. though the water is cold and only been off today. I checked ammonia .. none - but using prime in my water change just in case.
  3. An unknown electrical fault has caused all our lights and a few power points to cut out. My smallest tank (20L) dropped to 18oC (from 26oC) and no filter running today. Don't know how long but the trumpet snails were unhappy and all crawled to the top (yay - easy pickings to get them out) Anyway.. I have run a power lead to one of the points that still works and I'm about to do a water change. The question is how quickly to I bring the water temp up.. should I adjust the heater to say 22 first and then bring it back to 26 tomorrow.. or just leave it to reach temp today. It just has a couple platy and a whiptail in it. as for the electrical problem.. no idea.. the safety switch won't allow itself to stay on and I've turned all the lights off and unplugged the fridge which must be on the same circuit as also not going. We've had a random problem in the lounge .. every so often when a bulb is due to be replaced(diff lights each time) it would blow when turned and it would trip the switch, but in the past we just flicked it back to on and everything returned to normal but not this time. Electrician coming out tomorrow if we can't sort it tonight.
  4. In my tank which have nothing bigger than a dwarf gourami, after the first 7-10 days, any surviving fry usually stay that way. but 90 % of my fry are eaten in the first few days with the gourami and choc zebra about! I have two new female guppy in a quarantine tank at the moment.. one of the females was already pregnant and had fry yesterday .. they all still there as far as I can tell.. and because it's a QT .. there's barely anything else in the tank.. no gravel, a single tunnel and a small amount of floating Indian fern. somehow the fry managed to escape being eaten! It's always exciting when the first few batches of fry arrive but after a while when you get new fry every month you begin to not worry about saving them so much! I tend to let nature take it's course, it's good protein! (I have two guppy in the eel tank for that reason) But survivors are always interesting to watch grow up.. they usually turn out big and strong. Sometimes out of the blue I'll get a guppy coloration that I wasn't expecting .. like my sunset guppy
  5. lol.. both platys and guppys love to wave it about and will mate just about anything that moves. Glad to hear things are going well now Omaria.
  6. yes they could be ! especially as they are widespread in Auckland according to DOC
  7. one of the many ponds in Wattle Downs .. wattle Cove end. not sure whether it's grass carp but was hard to get a really good look.
  8. thanks Henwood .. good to know it can be used for emergency spikes etc.
  9. does anyone know the shelf life of Prime? I bought some for the first time today as people seem to recommend it. Can't believe what tiny amounts are needed compared to what i normally use. Literally a few drops in a bucket! Anyway, I probably won't use it every week , just for the big monthly water changes.
  10. we have thousands of the gambusia at our local ponds but lurking out just a couple more metres and deeper down are some other unknown fish. They do not look like goldfish or carp, haven't' manged to get a really close look. They are schooling fish of some sort about the size of a deeper bodied herring but with a stripe and a yellowish tail.. any ideas? I first noticed them, when something even bigger was chasing them and they were jumping. They will happily come in close when there is bread to be had. Plentiful Shrimp also in the ponds and eels. the pond may be brackish , not sure.. it's in a residential area but near mangrove sea inlets.
  11. yes, I did my transfers all in one go along with the fish... taking as much of the water, all the filter media and all the gravel. Didn't get any ammonia spikes so there must have been enough bacteria in the media to cope. I've done this for several tank changes and it's all been fine. I did add some TLC bacteria though , to allow for any that had died off during the transfer.
  12. i think you have to be careful using melafix on betta.. use half strength or something. there's a reason why they created a seperate treatment bettafix, specifically for betta. It's because they have a type of lung (LABYRINTH) that is affected by the treatment. The same goes for gourami.
  13. did you get it sorted? you're on the right page but you logged in with email instead of with the account . Once you log in to your profile with your account number/user ID , you'll also have access to the broadband usage meter.. it will show to the left of the email one that is currently showing. In my experience, telstra clear can take a few days to sort the details out. Keep on at them.
  14. I've always had plenty of guppy fry left with the 4 kuhlis in the tank. I've never seen them go after a guppy fry but the dwarf gouramis chase them. I noticed a big reduction in survivors after adding the dwarf gourami. But since adding the choc zebra there are even less each month.
  15. a cornered tom cat put my hubby into hospital and I was left at home mopping up the blood from the walls and floor.

  18. Hmmm, Zeb HAS been out a lot more than usual and my last lot of fry have all disappeared. Was hoping to grow up a female or two but they be gone, Thought it was the dwarf gourami snacking on them, but maybe not! Zeb is getting very brave and even chases off the gourami at feeding time. But he lets the Kuhlis slide all over him.
  19. lol. hardy stock aye ;-) one of the fry from the same batch swam into a cup when I was fishing out some water, was only a day old . Daughter wanted to have a closer look and dropped the cup - grabbed the fry and threw it back into the wrong tank with completely different water conditions.. (pH and temp different) ..it seemed ok but we left it there. That one is thriving well today and looks better than the other male that I kept.
  20. why did you take chem if you hate it?
  21. it's very nice. it's what i am on the lookout for at the moment.. that, or a metallic green one without red.
  22. try some decent water changes. I've had it happen on my male fighter and several good water changes and some salt and he came right.
  23. BikBok

    live bacteria

I use TLC and it's great. but I use it more as a monthly boost and after I've done filter clean or added new fish etc. For starting up new I think JBL filter start is the best.. it's a one off additive rather than ongoing like TLC is.
