Bought some thread tape today, $0.95 at Bunnings but I paid with a dollar coin so got it for just $0.90, what a steal! Wrapped the thread of the CO2 adaptor that meets the thread of the regulator about a dozen times with the teflon tape and what do you know? My leak issue has been solved! I think that's all of my equipment sorted, I'll connect all the glassware after I fill it for fear of breaking the diffuser, bubble counter and/or glass check valve. The glosso is growing super fast, I could almost sit here and watch it grow 8)
  2. I'm currently working with some of the JBL substrates, Aquabasis and Manado which are much cheaper. I find the Manado a wee bit light but it looks good. I'd just cap Aquabasis with sand next time.
  3. If it was me this is what I would do. Filter - Hang on the back filter, 500lph roughly. Heater - Jager 50W, aquaones are good too but Jagers are the best. Lighting - Depending on your budget and length of the tank, perhaps compact fluorescent/energy savers 6500k so you can grow a most basic plants. Substrate and decor - Sand is a cheap option, can get 25L for around $7 from most hardware stores, it needs a good rinse and you'll want about 1-2cm at the front sloped up to 5cm deep at the rear of the aquarium. Natural rocks or wood look good. I kept puffers for a bit in a planted tank, they loved plants and got on well with each other due to the plant cover I believe.

    boyu canisters.

So get the cheap Sun Sun HW-302, they're decent mid sized filters. And spare bathroom sink?

    Or Hamburg Mattenfilters?

What sort of a turnover would he be looking at for a 600L tank? I would think at least 2500l/h if lightly stocked.

Some pond filters come without pumps so be aware that you might need an external pump to drive them, best to ask questions. I've found Sun Sun canisters to be reliable, never tried Boyu. There's no reason a sealed pond canister filter can't be used on a large aquarium.

You're going to buy a product based on what the seller tells you? The one I linked is $29 cheaper and has a higher flow, it will physically filter more water per hour, it's that simple. I'd definitely get a pond filter if I were you, look at the turnover per dollar, $0.025 for the pond filter vs $0.2 for the original (rough math of course).

http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 175105.htm Far more flow, similar price, still not suitable for your sized tank. Looked at Pond Filters such as this http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 956409.htm ?

    boyu canisters.

Why would you pay $279 for that when Sun Sun HW-302 filters go for $88 + shipping? :-? I don't think 1250l/h is enough for a 600L tank.

    "Out there" fish tanks

Maybe that's how they make money? All the rooms are full of fish nuts :slfg:

You must be the fourth person to ask that, I'm surprised with such demand that no one sells them locally :-? I ordered mine from Aquaessentials.co.uk, cost $110 all up and was at my door in roughly two weeks. And thanks for the compliments guys

I'm used to untangling glosso  It's plenty dude, once I top it then I'll have all the cover I need. Then I'll be kicking myself for choosing such a weed  Half of the crypts seem to be doing well, the rest look really dry or melted :-? Thanks Joe! 8)

Here's an update just four days on. Over the weekend I installed the inline heater, ran the filter pipes and moved the T5HO ballast to below the cabinet. Excuse the mess, it's mostly CO2 stuff, and the tripod I'm doing a time lapse photo series with. Also, I'm surprised that in just four days I'm getting so much new growth from the Glosso, by this time next week I should be topping it. New glosso leaves, the original leaves should die off. The new cupboard internals. 6 way surge protected multiboard with light timers, T5HO ballast behind. Filter pipes held on with pipe clips I painted black, inline heater somewhat hidden by the tripod.
  15. I agree. Plants are natural filters, if you have enough plants and you don't overstock, water changes become few and far between.
  16. I can see it :-? Very in depth video Likoma!
  17. Is it just me or does it look like Naseby is frozen in time? Two old skool cars Another old skool car Old looking hotels Looks so nice though! I can only imagine what living out of the way would be like.

    Heater upgrade.

Heaters aren't on all the time like lights, if you have the time just watch how often they switch on or get a power meter to read exactly how much it's costing you.

    The What's Up? thread.

More hassle than it's worth really, better off with a filter for each.

    The What's Up? thread.

Wait why do you need double taps? :-? Whatever media you want to put in it, stock it with Eheim media if you like. I feel that enough of the beneficial bacteria exists in the substrate so the canister filter's job is more mechanical. I just load mine with standard ceramic rings and more recently pumice. I don't know if flow is the right word, you can have high turn over with little current if you set it up correctly. That's my plan on my AA project anyways, high turn over but not a tornado in the tank.

    Heater upgrade.

300W Jager heats a 1000L tank apparently. Do you have a well insulated fish room? If so, the heaters will hardly be on.

    Heater upgrade.

Jagers are hands down the best heaters, I've never heard of one failing and mine is still going strong. Quite a bit of $$ though.

    The What's Up? thread.

Why not get a Sun Sun HW-302 for $88 + shipping? It has a bigger capacity and higher flow. Spend the extra money on lily pipes 8)
