  1. When I refer to jars, I mean cut up coke/juice bottles floating in a larger tank of course.
  2. Looks like Hydrocotyle but click the image to go to the thread it's in 8)
  3. The very nature of a hospital tank or container is that it's a temporary place for the fish to recover. I love seeing fighters have a whole 60x30 to themselves but I've seen them just as happy in tanks half that size and in coke bottles too. It would be cruel to keep a neon tetra in a coke bottle, they love to swim but Bettas are less fussed about having room to move.
  4. I agree. So long as the water quality is good, Bettas, and most sick fish for that matter, are okay in a smaller space. It's easier and more cost effective for the keeper and the fish is only there for a short while.
  5. I'm glad someone pays attention to my thread  I can see potential here! That initial dusty water always gives me the shivers, hope it clears soon!
  6. I dosed salt and meth blue daily in a small jar/cup to save medication, changed all of the water once daily and it worked for me.
  7. Naww I'm good  I used to bury all of my fish in the vege garden out the back, now I just chuck them in the compost bin or similar.
  8. If the 1.2 million people in Auckland just paid for Auckland roads, Auckland would be fine. But what about rural townships with less than 5,000 residents? How would they support all of the roads in, out and around their town? We're a country, I don't understand this division.
  9. Wait, you're arguing that car drivers should pay for motorcyclist's injuries. But then you're against people outside of Auckland paying for Auckland roads. Pick a side dude.
  10. It's mostly ACC levies. If a car hits another car nose to tail then the occupants will likely suffer a bit of whiplash at worst. But if a car rear ends a motorcycle, the injuries sustained by the person driving the motorcycle will be far worse. Hence the higher price, it just covers treatment of the injuries. There is reason behind it, they don't just do it for fun.

Thanks Joe! The issue isn't really getting hold of these fish, it's more to do with the price per fish as I want to end up with a school of around 30. I might just have to stock it over a longer period of time. Today is rest and water change day, already done two 30% water changes in it's 7 day life and about to do a third.
  12. Island style, I like it 8) Are you going to have a foreground plant for the front and sides or just leave it bare sand?
  13. I've found Bettas sometimes get finrot for no real reason, despite great water conditions. I just used Meth blue, a bit of salt and kept up the high quality food to aid recovery. You're doing all the right things

Ember Tetras and Mosquito Rasboras are definitely on the shortlist now 8) Would Badis be too small? I want a larger feature fish about twice as large as the schoolers.
  15. I know this is way off topic but do you understand the logistics of all of that? It's bad enough trying to get the mongrel dogs registered, what makes you think that getting feral/rural cats (the ones who do most of the damage) registered is going to suddenly make them stop killing? That's if you could even get them registered in the first place, many cats won't even wear a collar. Sure, slap an extra $90 or so on the people whose cats lounge around inside all day and night, that'll fix the wild cat population. In fact, why not introduce a mouse and rat registration fee? Then billions of taxpayer dollars can be spent on getting little plastic tags for all the mice and rats in New Zealand and fix that issue too! Genius. And on the original topic, it's pretty appalling that they wouldn't make it clear that only dead fish should be thrown in the trash. Yeah people do let their fish air drown but saying it's okay is a different story.

Threadfin rainbows? Do they stay under 30mm??

Yeah they're about $15 a pop though so breeding them would be even more awesome I want a fish smaller than neons cause I want to make the tank look larger than it is. But I have a soft spot for neons too :nilly:

That's such a nice way of putting it! :') I sat and watched the tank for ages tonight, that dead moss is really bugging me but if I take out the rock it's attached to, my whole slope will come down Good question! I was thinking a shoal of ottos 6 to start off with maybe cause cories will dig up my glosso. Then a big school of tiny fish, maybe 20 of whatever HFF has on special to start off with and build it up. And then a feature fish I need to decide on.

I have some others I can use if I really miss them but I like my lawn and stems enough  Heaps of the java fern is dying off and I didn't quite realise how much of the moss was dead or dying before I tied it down, now most of it looks horrible and I know it's really not good for the tank either Thanks CC! The next 7 days should be even better. It's not the scape that makes the plants grow, it's the hundreds of dollars you spend on fancy gear  :nilly:

Here's the tank after 7 days of growth. I need to have a good play with the camera to get the balance right but really not bothered after work. FTS. Glosso growing in nicely. I'm really pleased with the growth so far, the polysperma is shooting up and although the Rotala is taking it's time, it's got nice pink tips already. Trying to balance the CO2, adjusting it a bit everyday but I seem to either have not enough or far too much but today it was sitting at green so I hope it holds :nilly:
  21. I've used JBL Manado on top of Flourite before with great success in terms of plant growth, Glosso finds it a little bit hard to spread through the Manado though as it's very light and easily moved. Ideally I'd use Flourite on it's own or something like Aquabasis under a decent layer of sand.
  22. Do a quick Google of "planted aquarium ph controller", the links I looked at said it worked but timers on their own or timers with pH controllers save a LOT of CO2. Tom Barr only uses timers and he has no issues.
  23. With a timer too yeah? Be interesting to see how that goes.
