Put some netting or a sponge over the inlet, now your fish list is back to normal. You're welcome
  4. They look so out of place, not to mention ugly

    German Blue Rams

I believe the strain was developed in Germany.

 Still mucking around with the CO2 cylinder, the connection between the adaptor and the regulator is hopeless, will need thread tape or something

I have platys dyinh left, right and centre for no apparent reason. It sucks!
  8. You find things like this everywhere, let's hope some newbie doesn't buy it! To be fair, it does have very nice ventral fins. I've seen tanks for sale recently for about four times what you'd pay for them new, some people just don't understsnd the idea of devaluation. You fill a tank and it loses half it's value, picking your favourite fish, plastic plants and decor does NOT make it more valuable

Keen for an inline diffuser, they're about $50 though.

Hahaha almost worth a name change if it wasn't so ridiculous

Yeah without the spiral in the centre. It broke at the curved part of the stem, not the ceramic disk. Single piece of glass, I don't know my own strength

I forgot about it  Does bleach weaken glass??

    The What's Up? thread.

Broke my spare CO2 diffuser after soaking it in bleach for days. Fitted it onto the hose and when I pulled it off it popped into two pieces. Had to cut the hose in the end. Cut up my thumb too

    is this real???

First is shopped, forgot the name of the effect but it's common.
  15. I think it's probably too high in iron and would cause an algae bloom if not properly capped. I can't find ANY information regarding iron sand and planted tanks though :-?
  16. Not always possible with international competitions, the logistics and expense of that would be crazy. There have been a few (rare) cases of people editing their photos, not just colour balancing and light correction either, adding more plants and/or fish which is against the rules.
  17. Not that I know of. It's very difficult to transport established tanks without disturbing the layout. At the aquascaping parties they simply display the photos on a large screen and sometimes have hardscape layout competitions for fun.
  18. Most are home aquariums but there are a few professionals that do it for a job alongside their aquascaping business, Takashi Amano, Oliver Knott, etc.
  19. Most enter with the competition in mind and try to replicate a nature scene found terrestrially. Then about a month before the competition they make sure the scape is looking clean, trim the plants back into shape and wait for them to grow a little so it doesn't look too artificial. There's a rule in some competitions forbidding photos of the aquarium to be reproduced before the competition which leads to much secrecy and ruins the fun of aquascaping IMO.
  20. Remember that the even more popular one "Glosso" is actually a NZ native, Glossostigma elatinoides.
  21. I agree with both of these. We have a sufficient range of plants in NZL, any plants you see overseas can be substituted for one from our local range.

    Project AA

Today I got a wee package in the mail from N1CK containing a few emersed plants to get me started. Plants as they came. Clockwise from left: A tiny spring of stargrass, narrow leaf java fern, dwarf sag, assorted crypts and my favourite, Glosso! I thought it doesn't look like much at first but once I got chopping and sorting, there was far more than there appeared. How to hold Glosso for planting. Asst. crypts. Foreground. Glosso all planted. It filled the foreground nicely, can't wait for it to grow! FTS, excuse the reflection I was in a rush to get off to Bunnings before class started
  23. The sand I have is Results Builders Sand and it takes a while to get the water to run clear but it's good stuff when it's clean.
