  1. Thats so awesome, I just never realized that we have fish and coral that colourful in our waters
  2. There are harder degrees to get into, for example; Architecture, engineering, biomed etc. If your as good as you say you are, I reckon you will be able to get into Bsc
  3. Do you know if it matters what degree you apply for? I assumed you pick Bachelor of science which normally isn't too hard to get into. You could try apply for another degree like bachelor of arts (not fine arts unless you want to) and do some papers related to science and then cross credit it back BSC the next year when you get in. But don't take my word for it, check it up with the university, they have advisors who would be happy to help you out. Otherwise just go through yr 13, I did and it was the best year of my high school life :bounce:
  4. I think the eheim classics would be quite kid safe. The 2213 I find quite hard to disassemble! The flow knobs are hard to turn, as well as the twist caps for the pipes and its so hard to get a grip on the head of the cannister when taking it off. Even if they did manage to loosen everything and unclipped the cannister heads, the water shouldn't leak out due the the really tight seals on them
  5. Just do the water changes, regulators. Skip the water tests and it is fun. I find the flourite black sand and onyx sand is fine for catfish barbels, I've got 6 happy pygmy cories with intact barbels in mine. Only thing is that khuli's cant burrow into it like normal gravel.
  6. Man do I feel sorry for those guys....
  7. I'm doing architecture, finishing in a few weeks once I finish writing this thesis  ! Almost totally unrelated to fish keeping apart from where I find aquascaping to have elements of it such as Form, concepts, proportion and aesthetics :bounce:
  8. That's a nice dedication! Might do something like that for my thesis... In my tank I've got good surface movement, so it may help with the oxygen bit...but it seems shrimps in generally may also have high sensitivities to PH swings with Co2, but so far so good..They really like the tetra colour bits, they'd grab a whole pellet, hide from other fishes then take their time eating it My 1kg Co2 bottle costs about $17 to refill, so its pretty cheap. I'm not sure what bottles they can refill, but my one is an UP AQUA branded bottle from Asia
  9. Here's my lucky red one 26.4 degrees, pressurized Co2. This is just after a water change btw, so lots of bubbles on hair grass
  10. I seem to have a redish one among the ones I have..the rest darkened up as well In terms of breeding them, I haven't done it, but the first batch of shrimp I received was from someone who said that they received 2 pregnant shrimps and lucky enough, the babies survived and grew up...which I ended up with.. The babies grew up in 25 degrees water, but I dont know if they added any salt to their tank, may be a possibility as they were keeping mollies I'm keeping 10+ shrimps at 26.4 degrees atm with pressurized Co2 and they have done well these last few weeks though I did have an adult gold ram hunting and eating them...now relocated to a different tank anyways, good luck :bounce:
  11. I find cars pretty addictive too  If only I had more monies maybe I should try out gambling........jks

    Grape Vine

Awesome, thanks for the thread! We have an old grape vine that we don't take care of very well, hence it has dead dried up vines on it from last summer lol Will be giving it a go, once I get some time
  13. wow, thanks for all the experiences! I honestly can't imagine not keeping fish, but yea I guess if I end up not giving them the proper care, then I will be giving up the hobby for a while...will have to see where I end up, so many decisions to make! I will be starting my architecture career soon and I plan to do it well It's great to see that people are still able to get back into it after many years though!

    Grape Vine

Has anyone used dried grape vine in their tanks? I'm gonna be setting up a nano planted tank and was thinking of using grape vine for the hardscape. Reasons; 1.Because shops don't have very thin stick driftwood 2.I live in Auckland, so its hard to nice driftwood (apart from Rangitoto - too far) 3. I have access to dried grape vines 4. Grape vines already have very interesting shapes and don't have excessive bark on them I've started soaking some vines for testing for a week now and they don't seem to want to sink, so will need to tie them down in the tank. Anyone else tried this? or any alternatives? Cheers
  15. Who has taken a break from fish keeping? Why, What did you gain and was it worth it? I'm at a point in life (finishing university in a couple of weeks) where I'm thinking about what to do next. I want to travel outside NZ, so it may mean I wont be keeping fish for a while, unless fish can go on trips too I've heard of people taking breaks from the hobby for long periods i.e. 5 years + So, why did you do it, what did you gain, and was it worth it/did you need to stop keeping fish?
  16. Nah, the weipro cost me about $50 for one of them. I got moisture in my jager as well, though there is a possibility thats its not actually water?
  17. Maybe try a UV? Im not sure if that will work though...otherwise I'd move the fish to another tank then treat. Also up your temps if you can
  18. Between Fluval and Jager, I'd go Jager personally just because of all the excellent reviews and people who swear by them. Although I've had average results with my one! But they worked really well in the shop I used to work at. I've broken 2 fluvals, but haven't broken a Jager..yet. The aquaone's seem pretty good for their price, I brought one recently and its temperature was calibrated perfectly But make sure you get one rated 1 and half times the wattage versus your tank volume in litres, otherwise its not gonna be able to heat it in winter In my 100L tank I'm using two Weipros with digital thermostats that i brought off TM a month ago, So far I'm loving them the most Stainless steel and perfectly calibrated as well
  19. But if you cant sell koura or shrimp without a permit....then would it go the same for daphnia? lol
  20. I think they look good I was wondering how big are the holes in the netting?
  21. Takashi Amano's tank What CAD program are you using si?
  22. Personally I'd say the eheim 2231 external filter would be better for the job. If you want your water to be clearer, you could put in finer filter material or clean out the filter more often. I have a 2224 and usually clean it out once every 3-4 months Alternatively you could run them both though the aqua clear is an excellent filter, it will require more maintenance IMO
  23. Are the metal ones made with rubber internals as well? I cant imagine what else would work.. :bounce:
  24. Been using a plastic one I got from HW for while now,did fine last time co2 canister backflowed, though that hasn't happened in a while either. I wonder if anyone knows how much co2 affects plastics/rubbers?
  25. because im a dreamer....... of fish tanks
