  1. good idea, i've been wishing they did that  was browsing a few weeks before I managed to find the right one the other day, and i've still got a watchlist full. Two have identical 'large tank' titles, but one is 900L and one is 160L lol.

welcome best place to come with questions, I always check here first
  3. gorgeous kaoro :nfs: sounds like great fun I'm glad to hear that doc's keeping an eye on the aquatics of our local area Ohakune's just down the road, are you doing any in the whanganui catchment too? Would love to know what you spot if you do :bounce:
  4. Dinner time, they're all waiting for the smelts to drop the food down. Big new koura in the front and little girl koura at the back, once the big guy gets some he'll run away and hide with it and the other two will sit out there and eat.
  5. We see them in the river where there's a fair bit of current so I wouldn't think that's it. Do they have hidey holes scattered around they can dart into when they're out and about? We've got two girls we've had for ages who walk around all day and aren't scared by a thing, but the newest one only sneaks out to grab bits at feeding time, shoots back into his house if you move. Sure he comes out when no ones watching though lol.
  6. They'd be brilliant in a class Mine are really friendly, spend lots of time out and about and all come running when they smell food. Fascinating watching the way they eat, with all their legs probbing for bits and their hands picking them up.
  7. The best information for planning planting that i've found is the landcare research site, lots of good studies on there, and a guide to riparian planting prepared by niwa for doc which is getting old now but really in depth and usefull. The doc one wasn't working online properly anymore but when I rang them they dug up a scanned copy and posted it to me on disk the same day, brilliant of them I'm preparing a submission for local council on the long term plan, submissions close friday so working hard on that at the mo. Good support from some people on council so will be interesting to see how the rest take it. Also finalising people for the board so we can register as a charity, loads of different avenues to explore for funding once that's done. So things are happening and we will get there :bounce: Went to grab some pics of the last stormwater ditch the other day, and snapped one of the edge of the whanganui there too, rainbowy... :tears:
  8. what a cool idea the others are good too, cardinals and green neons
  9. it looks a bit like ludwigia but it's not red anywhere and has finer leaves..
  10. fallen willow leaves everywhere this week, koura will be pleased but that plant in the middle, grows on the river edges around here, submersed and emersed sort of flood zone plant. Love to know what it is but i might need to get a better pic.
  11. I do computer repairs for a bit of extra cash. Be interesting to see how many off here are computery-people :smln:
  12. This... And the one in the middle of this... if anyone knows? :bounce:
  13. here.. That girl with the blue tail near the top of the filter is lovely Two foot should be ok, just centre it over the plants. And you can always run that light that's on at the moment as well.
  14. Those girls are stunning, congrats Not often you see them with decent colour :bounce:
  15. Someone I know got one from the auckland city breeder on trademe, and was pleased You'd probably want to visit in person and see the set up and how relaxed the birdies are at home to get the best idea.
  16. we are I would have expected there to be a hundredfold or so increase, since at the start of the 70s plastic wasn't used much and must take a while to get from salepoint to floating garbage patch. And if we stopped using plastic tomorrow it'd probably still increase for a while as it caught up. But it's very sad that we're nowhere near thinking about it and probably wont stop the plastic littering until we run out of plastic I love the potato fibre stuff they use to make plates and cups and now meat trays out of, we ought to be demanding that everything possible is made out of it or similar products. Save the planet, and save paying to get rid of rubbish if you can just put the packaging into the compost :happy2:
  17. welcome There's nothing more theraputic than zoning out in front of the tank at the end of the day
  18. Thanks I can picture how it works now. I'm just planning what to do for filtering and layout on a new tank, managed to grab a nice big new home for the natives I might try running the pool filter with the intake on the left side and out on the right just below the waterline, with some media in it, to do some of the filtering and create a good flow. Then put my existing diy powerhead filter at the bottom of the left side also, and the outtake above the water on the right so it trickles back in through the plants like it does now.
  19. Thanks If i remember correctly when it was on the pool the intake was two holes halfway down the side, and the outlet was slightly higher, all below the waterline. So if I was to put the filter under the tank, with intake and outlet at the same level near the top of the tank under the water line, i'd get about the same flow rate? But if the outlet from the filter was above the intake and water line then it would slow down the flow?
  20. Excuse the silly question, but what's head height? The original filter cartridge is long gone but I figured I could just put some media in there..
  21. We've got one of these sitting around.. Thanks to naughty puppies chewing the pool Anyway i've been wondering if I could use it as a filter for my new tank. Either to return the sump water to the tank or by putting media in it and using it the same as how it goes on the pool. Looks like any other external canister filter to me and it's never had any chemicals put through it. Nothing on it anywhere to say how many litres/hour, but it makes a good current in the 8ft/2500L pool so it can't be too shabby.
