  1. bugger thats what i thought, but was still hopeing i was wrong anyone know where i can get a replacement hood then, or will i have to replace the whole tank?
  2. well i turned on the light on my jebo tank for the comp today, and a few minutes later it stunk the house out with a nasty burning electrics smell and the light turned off. Now i'm fairly sure the bulb is ok, is that what happens when the starter thingy needs replacing or is it more serious? The hood is really banged up and old, came with no bulbs second hand, and i only put one of the two bulbs in, that wouldn't cause it would it? Anyway where do i go from here, bother replacing the starters and trying or do i need to pull it to bits and look for something else wrong?

    OH DEAR!

thats awful i'm thinking about getting a big tank for my lounge sometime, having read this i'll be asking for expert opinions on how to get the safest tank when i go to buy one now. Never imagined the glass could be so dangerous
  4. what temp is the water at? sound like they could be infertile, but you'd think he'd have eaten them if they were, might just have to wait a bit longer and see
  5. bet you had fun chasing them all  lucky they've got somewhere nice to go though we had to catch some dumped roosters that were living on the mainstreet, took a few weeks to catch all 5, even with a big cage trap setup, darn sneaky flying things lol. *added in light of your post - thats sad put down because they weren't cared for? would love some parrots again one day, had cockatiels years ago but the kings are awesome
  6. yeah well, unscrew an end next time and see how long it takes i could have done it quicker, but the man came along and took over for an hour and a half, once he finally gave up i got a good look at it and figured how to balance it all upside down lol
  7. sorted :bounce: why thankyou neon i tried fiddling with those last time, but it didn't move of come off so i thought it was for something else, this time i jimmied it off with a screwdriver and it was so easy to change bulbs lol
  8. model is AL-20D, and have some of the AL-20's too, same thing but one tube. Its the freestanding light hoods, not part of tank.
  9. A few months ago i changed a bulb on a double tube aquaone lighthood, and it was a horrible 2 hour mission. There isn't (as far as i can see) anyway to get the cover off without unscrewing the end cap, and once you do that the parts that the tubes go into move around, so its near impossible to get it back on with everything in the right place balanced carefully. So now that i need to change another one, is there some proper way of doing it? I'm sure its not supposed to be as hard as it was, but i couldn't for the life of me see any other way to do it. They're such common lights someone must have been through this?

    ponds!!!!!

i made two a few months back, one is a hole in the ground with a liner - about $20, the other is an old bathtub dug in - try the local dump/noticeboard for a free one
  11. its freezing here today, wind feels like ice, so i imagine they're in for a good dumping of snow
  12. from hamilton by chance? He looks alot like my newest edition lovely fish :bounce:
  13. i think some of the others are lilac too, but that one has got alot darker this afternoon suddenly, deeper purple now. Its strange how they change colour so much, between morning and evening. When they're ready to go i'll post up pics of the ones i want homes for and hopefully there'll be one to suit you
  14. the lilac-y one is missing them, but the rest have them, they're just flicked back when i try to snap them. The lilac one is a funny fish, doesn't seem quite right, so he/she might have to stay as a pet with our other few munter fishes. But there are some nice normal ones that colour if you want one when they're ready
  15. here's an update pic they are 2 1/2 months now, still little, i think i fed them microworms too long, but was worried about killing them off with too many bbs or something, thought it better to have small surviving fishis for my first try. Will be loading them up with novotom and bbs next time there are a few of the dark blackish green ones, 4 or 5 white ones, and lots of these pale green and lavender ones, only two blue like dad. The one on the top left is still my favourite, he's got a good spread to his tail now and looks like he's getting the butterfly edges. Their tails are branching off lots now too, they seem to grow longer and wider every time i feed them. White ones fins have got a bit darker, they're pale first thing in the morning but by afternoon they are grey and black, and their bodies have a pale blue irridesence, strange. I think i can pick the boys out now, at least, half of them have much longer tails and especially bottom fins, the others are still short. The girl up the top right is pulling faces
  16. the blue ones look big already, how old are they now?
  17. i have australes in a community tank with bettas, guppies, rainbowfish etc, they get on well.
  18. bettas do a fairly good job of keeping the fry numbers down, provided there's not too many floating plants.
  19. you found your way here then have you checked the bulbs to make sure they're not blown? Beyond that, wait for the experts...
  20. or a black pond in full sun over the hottest part of the year = at least 24deg
  21. lol, true true i learnt all my maths at school, but there seems to be very little call for it in real life.
  22. happy birthday :bounce: thats a very cool cake
  23. probably depends on the fish too, some might be more prone to it, like the doubletails. I dropped way too many bloodworms in the community tank once, and the female bettas in there ate most of them before i could fish them out, then looked horribly bloated and uncomfortable, sat in the corner looking sad all day. I was really worried but i just waited two days without feeding them and they were fine.
