  1. Yeah, and the armour on corys will be unappealling.
  2. Depends how big the cories are. I think if you have cories 3-4cm or larger you would be safe from all the bichirs except for the ornates. Thats my experience anyway, I had a bronze one in with some sens and stuff, he lived until the jardini thought he looked tasty :an!gry
  3. I dont think they mix very well in pairs, although I have seen comms of 5-6.
  4. BGK can hold their own. You do realise that you have fish with different water requirements? BGK needs acidic water whereas your zebras will need alkali conditions for better health. Also the dwarf gourami may be bullied by others.
  5. I did a shark dive in Fiji; dived with lemonfin shark, black and white tips, 3 bull sharks, giant grouper. Was the most epic experience, didnt find it scary at all.
  6. ^^ Boring tank. Nice fish, poor setup. Why keep such nice fish if your gonna keep them in a sterile box.
  7. Dont judge the safety of the combo so soon, many aro comms initially look fine but as they settle disputes may occur. Plenty of evidence on mfk.
  8. No. I have asked about it before. You would need the filter to be at or above the level of the tank. Installing it, maintaining it etc is just way too much hassle. FX5 does the job even better.
  9. I really like the look of the larger natives, tempted to setup a tank with them....better not.
  10. No chance of any channa ever coming in I think. pity, they are kickass. Still prefer bichirs though :smln:
  11. Plenty of them at HFF albany. Easy enough to distinguish males and females; males all bicker and the females just sorta just sit there lol. I think the males have more markings on the face than the rest of the body, females have stronger markings/barring along the body I think?
  12. Yeah, I would like the cubans to stay in the hobby here. Just need a hardcore breeder to step up, i dont have the funds or time to setup another tank for them. Wouldnt need to be large though, 30 gallon perhaps? Mine is smaller than the jurapari he is with, definately more dominant. Eats readily on massivore. This guy is destined for a cichlid comm though. I would get festivum but they wouldnt mix well with my more agro cichlids methinks.
  13. I got a Cuban cichlid from the last HFF shipment, I was wondering who else got these guys. How big have they got? Aggression levels? Anyone attempting to breed them?
  14. Thats good they eat that algae... handy since I cant really go for plecos. They look cooler with juvenile colouration and shape I think.
  15. I think the red eye strain looks better. Are they as brutal on chewing wood as some sources say? Plants are a no go I bet. What sort of size do you expect yours to get to?
  16. Do all Uaru develop the red eyes? How big are yours David? Full size?
  17. Neutral/6.5 seems to be the tank average, everything seems to adapt.
  18. So long as it doesnt compete for dominance, the geos tend to stick to themselves. Maybe the aggression will be distributed throughout the tank with all those cichlids. Im keen to get an Uaru perhaps?
  19. Yeah good point there. Will see how it goes I think, Cuban may choose to dance more with the dempseys or festae?
  20. Im not that much of a fan of the chocolate cichlids, they also get quite large dont they? My old male festae was fine with many of my other fish, maybe its as a pair they are terrors? Hopefully a lone female would be manageable. The cuban is with the jurapari right now, they seem to be fine? Are you suggesting the jurapari is not aggressive enough? Brasiliensis is not staying, I would rather another fish in its place. Its not aggressive at all, its a female I think too. Uaru is a good idea. I do like the look of them. Are the severums in HFF albany actually Rotkiel? They look good too I think.
  21. I think the cubans look good, plus they are a rarity in the market, Im sure they would be easier to sell than severums? A nice pair of jack dempseys look mint IMO, and they are excellent breeders.
  22. Heya guys, I have come to the conclusion that I would like some feature cichlids in my 6ft x 2ft x 2ft tank, the current stocking is: 2 ebjd (one 15cm, one 20cm), flagtail (16cm), bgk (25cmish), ornate bichir (40cm), 3 senegal bichirs (18-23cm). There is also 1 geo brasiliensis, 2 bala sharks and a pink chalceus - but these are most likely temporary residents. I also have a geo jurapari, cuban cichlid, 3 delhezis and 2 palmas buettekoferi growing out to put in the main tank. My idea is for a primarily medium sized cichlid comm with my bichir collection +flagtail + bgk. The stocking levels at the moment are suitable and nothing looks cramped which is how i prefer it. However, with the removal of the sharks etc I would like maybe 2 more colourful/characterful medium sized cichlids to complete the tank. 20cm is a good size; not too small to be eaten by the ornate, not too big that the tank is overcrowded. I was thinking perhaps a female festae cichlid and a red severum to contrast with the blue of the ebjds and the bronze/black of the cuban? Although I would like a jaguar cichlid, it would not fit in well with my stock, also no oscars (both get too big). Ideas?
