Oh, does anyone have any suggestions on what plants I could add that are low maintenance and don't require loads of light? Seems the current plants I have (no idea what they are) aren't liking it in there as they're dropping their leaves (believe it or not, my silvers don't eat them - probably because they get a lot of lettuce to eat regularly) I have a lilly-type plant in there which seems to be doing ok, and some java fern but the rest drop their leaves.

It's an Eheim Classic external filter - so is fiddly to take apart to clean out. I do have a new internal sponge filter I could try - I originally bought that for my small tanks but run them without filters instead. It's just that internal filters look ugly - but I guess I could hide it somehow so will give that a go. Thanks for the advice everyone

It's a pain because it doesn't work properly - it's always getting filled with air and I'm tried of fiddling around trying to get the thing to run properly. I had to add an oxygen stone because the filter is not generating enough movement. And, they are a pain to pull apart and clean out. I would prefer to do regular water/gravel cleans than muck around with it anymore. I don't think I need plants if I have an oxygen stone. *ignores Snookies comment*

Believe it or not, the dollars don't eat the plants much, the plants tend to die as they don't have enough light/CO2 whatever to grow I think - the leaves drop off and float around the tank. I should probably get some plants that are hardy and don't need fussing with CO2 and bright lighting - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Anyway, I wouldn't get rid of fish, I love them all - they're my babies @ Kiwi - I have sand as a substrate, not gravel though

The filter works fine, but they're a pain - much easier and quicker to simply gravel-clean and water-change. My filter doesn't provide enough air-flow so I have to add an airstone to the tank as well - then thought I may as well get rid of the stupid thing  I have 2 smaller tanks with fish with no filter or airstone and they're fine - just wanted to check it would be feasible for a bigger tank with more fish.
-
Would it be feasible to run a 3 foot tank (about 180 litres) without a filter that contains: 2x silver dollars 3x angels 6x khuli loaches 6x cories 1x BN If so, how often would I need to do a water change/gravel clean?

I went to the gym, came back and the eggs had all been eaten (didn't move them from the main tank so Mum and Dad must have got stuck in) Might have to see about getting another tank because I can guarantee this will happen again! Damn fish breed like rabbits!
-
The first batch didn't work out as they weren't fertilised. The angels have laid eggs again but the only spare tank I had before to put the eggs into is now home to 6 baby guppies. I could move the eggs into their tank but would the guppies eat them? I bought the guppies to put with my baby platies but the guppies were smaller than I thought (food size for the plating) so had to have their own tank

Can you please explain the difference in the body shape.?

OK, done - but I had to add tonic as I don't have any meth blue per se, but tonic has meth in it so should be ok? I have microworms but have diminished my supply so will try to get some more or find some brineshrimp - I'll check with my lfs. So, no feeding until about a week after they hatch, when they're free swimming - got it. Well, now I just play the waiting game..... Thanks for your help

Thanks Ryan, I'll move the heater and the parents to my 65 litre tank and see if the eggs hatch at all - if they do, I'll have to buy a bigger tank for them! I'm sure the golden is male and they are fertilised - one or two of the eggs have turned white and he's eaten them, but he stays with them constantly - whereas the female stays nearby but is not so attentive.
-
Thanks Mark - that's very helpful The parents are guarding their eggs fiercely - the other fish in the tank have been herded to the other end of the tank, away from the eggs and the parents are being very aggressive towards them if they swim near. So, should I move the heater and the parents into another tank? What happens when they hatch? What about feeding them?

Black and orange striped goldfish lose the black as they age (they only have the black stripes as juveniles) I had a blue fan which went white - must also be an age thing.

I think my angelfish have laid eggs on the heater in the community tank: I think the Golden in the pic, plus my newest addition to the tank (only had it a week!) a Clown Black are the culprits. I have an empty 65 litre tank available but have no idea about raising fry etc. - what's the next step? Any help would be appreciated

That's just sacrilege to even suggest it! If you don't want avocado - give it to me! :bounce:

He said please so what's the issue? Not sure how longevity on this site means one should instantly incur respect? I love Pixar, though have to admit this didn't quite grab me as their other movies. It was certainly great and they used a different formula, but the different formula didn't sit well with me either - maybe because it was different. Unlike their other movies, it's not one I'd see again. Would love to see RocknRolla as I'm a fan of Guy Ritchie movies (bar the one starring his ex-wife which I haven't seen)

By removing them (filter, pipes and all) from tank and separating them from the filter. I do this too but strong water flow doesn't loosen the crud so will have to buy one of those metre long pipe cleaners too.

I've recently found out (thanks to the lovely and helpful people on this site) that you don't actually need a filter or even air stone/oxygen flow for a tank. I have a 40 litre tank set up in my room and was also concerned about noise of filters and pumps etc. but it's not required so long as the balance of ammonia/nitrate etc. is right for the fish. The only thing I have plugged in for the tank is heater (as I have tropicals but you wouldn't need that for goldfish) and light for plants (which you may be also able to do without if your room is light enough). 2 goldfish in a 100 litre tank should be ok for this set up - give it a go Just make sure you do regular small water changes and you should be right.

Goldfish are little piggies - they do always look hungry but don't let that fool you - they will follow you around the tank when you walk past - not necessarily for food but could be out of interest as well. I'm wondering if, because they're only fed flake now, they're lacking from their vege diet they would have received while in the pond: algae and any other plant life growing in the pond. Goldfish are omnivores and need a balanced diet like we do: meat and vege. As goldfish are omnivores, they will eat anything: frozen brine and bloodworms, plants, veges, flakes of all kind etc. You're only feeding them flake at the moment - it's like you only eating bread - that can't sustain you and you'll have problems if you don't get all the nutrients you need - same for fish. They're lacking in veges: peas are the most likely option: soften the peas first by cooking a few in the microwave for about a minute until the shell can be easily removed. Let them cool then mush them into the tank. You could also try doing the same with corn kernels and even try soft carrot (pre-frozen stuff you get in vege mixes which is already soft and just needs eating) - but I find goldfish tend to love the peas best.

I haven't done anything like this before but have dabbled with html. With your guidance and some help from others who have created board styles before, I should be able to get there - not sure if in time for the Feb 7 deadline though but I'll do my best I look forward to receiving your email *insert thumbsup smilie* - incidentally, any chance we could also look at adding some more smilies too?
-
OK, I've never done it before but I'm up for the challenge :bounce: I'll need access to your server though as I don't have one. @ K1w1, I completed missed that setting  Thank you
-
Oh, and while I'm on the topic - any chance of getting some more board styles? There are only 3 and they're all blue and well..... *snore*

I'm damned if I can find that setting in the control panel. Why can't I view other members' profiles? I get this when I try "You are not authorised to view the member list or profiles."
