  1. I have a question on Killi behaviour - I can't find much on the net. I have 3 young males in a tank and was watching their behaviour tonight, 2 of them seemed to be picking on one and one even "sat" on it and did a quick shimmy - is this a dominance thing?

Here's a pic of mine, you're right they are very similar - I googled the P82 and it looked like it had bigger spots but I see some are the same size as the blues. The seller described them as blues, her name is Karen. I resaved as 640 pixels wide and it still won't upload.

Nope, mine are definitely blue though (as pictured) - not P82s.

I have 3 of those pretty boys - the blue Gardneri, that is
  5. The male seems to have turned against the female as he's constantly chasing her about and she's hiding from him now - any idea why? I'm going to have to remove her I think so he'll have to take on the role of solo dad.
  6. I recently purchased a tank which came with a breeding pair of pink convicts - they just had their fry and the owner told me I don't need to do anything as the parents will take care of them. Is there anything I should do? I have microworms I can feed them.
  7. Where do you get the slate from? I have a tank set up just for my breeding pair - it's my first time too. Do you feel it's best to remove the parents or leave the father in there to do his parenting thing?
  8. I water change and gravel clean weekly - and always a good water change. OK, I'll do a good water change and will add them in, thanks Linda
  9. There's no filter in that tank - it's a small tank but will accommodate the new fish (only 2) until I set their tank up (also getting a tank with the fish). I really don't want to add a filter as the tank is in my room and couldn't stand the noise at night. I changed the water about a week before I moved the previous fish out (5 platties). I may have to add them to my community tank then - I have angels in there and am getting angels today, just a bit concerned about the room in the tank and possibility of fighting.
  10. I have a tank that had some fish in which I've since moved to another tank - so this tank is now empty - has heater still going, water, plants etc. just no fish for about 3 weeks. I'm about to pick some fish up today and wonder if the tank will still be ok to add them to it considering it's been fishless for a while. I haven't made any water changes since I removed the fish before.
  11. I have a tank I might move the wood and BN to (about 40 to 60 litres) which is currently empty. I thought I might add a Siamese Fighter or two as well as I understand they like wood or at least those sorts of conditions? What other fish like or tolerate wood in tanks?
  12. What is this green stuff? I cleaned out the tank yesterday and already there's another layer of it (clearly visible in bottom of tank without sediment)
  13. I think it must be the wood - I bought it from a pet shop so hoped it would be tank-ready but guess it will still leak tannins? I can't boil it though as it has a plant and BN permanently attached to it The PH level is often low so guess the wood is the cause again, I always have to crank it up - I'm using baking soda now as I've run out of PH Up - but I'm sure baking soda does the job too. the tank water is yellow-green in colour, probably is hard to tell in the pic, but what could the dark green filament be at the bottom of the tank I have to siphon out every week? Anyway, I could remove the wood but then the BN needs it as part of her diet, which is why I bought it in the first place.
  14. My community tank water always looks green - I don't know what it is or how to get rid of it (see pic) - in the pic, I've actually just done a water change and cleaned the tank out! It's better but still very green. I have two smaller tanks that aren't filtered and have no problems with green water in them (and they have plants in them too). The community tank has 2x silver dollars, 2x angels, 6x khuli loaches, 6x cories and 1x BN. It's filtered and has one plant. I don't use the tank light much as the dollars freak out when I turn it on if the place is dark first - but the room gets plenty of light so the plant is growing happily (also have one of my smaller tanks in the same room). The fish seem fine - have had them in the tank for years and are not bothered by the green filament at the bottom of the tank or the colour. So, what can it be and how can I get rid of it? I notice there is a lot of greenish film sitting at the bottom of the tank which is regularly siphoned when I do a gravel clean, but a layer quickly builds up again - assume this is the culprit but no idea what it is. I also have wood in there for the BN - could this be the cause of the problem? I'd just like a clear tank for once.
  15. Can anyone please advise?
  16. I bought 4 baby platies a while ago, they're doing well but 1 has died. I think I have 1 female and 2 males. One of the males as paired off with the female and harrasses the other male - so the other male is all by himself - I'd like to buy more to even things up a bit. How many should I buy and do all colours/species get on ok? I'd like some which are a different colour to yellow. I thought I'd buy 3 more, total of 6 - for a 40 litre tank.
  17. He's rounded - a lot less going on for him than the girls. OK, so maybe he is doing his job and there's nothing visible to show that - maybe I should remove the eggs next time before they eat them. Problem is, they lay and eat - so if I remove them it has to be asap otherwise this fella doesn't get a chance to do his job. I read in another thread that it can take time for Angels to get it right and stop eating the eggs, didn't realise it would be so many times though so will just leave them and see how they go next time.
  18. Before he came along, my 2 goldens behaved like normal angels - get a bit aggressive every now and then and that was it, never once laid eggs - until he came. A week after I got him I find eggs in the tank, didn't see who'd done it but he was paired off with one of the goldens and they were behaving protective of the eggs together - I removed the eggs but they all died anyway so assume they were never fertilised. The same couple laid eggs together again, then I saw my other golden fill with eggs and he paired off with her - still the eggs all died. I finally saw the pair in action the other day - the golden laying them and he passing over them but nothing coming from him, if that makes sense - I would have thought if he was fertilising them, there'd be something visible - at least he's trying I suppose.
  19. So how are the eggs? My angels regularly lay eggs, but then eat them as I don't think the male knows how to do his part
  20. I never get bored of my fish - but then I buy them for enjoyment, not for breeding.
  21. No idea how old it is - I also have 2 golden angels in the tank - since I introduced this fella (I'm picking it's a he) they've both starting laying eggs constantly - the thing is, he's not doing his job so wondered if it's actually a confused male or another girl that's setting my first two off.
  22. I didn't know that - that's kinda neat that they change patterns and colours
  23. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions - just to ally all your fears, I have cleaned the tank out today, removed the Eheim and replaced it with an internal sponge filter - a little noisier but a lot easier to deal with (and visually looks a lot better without those hoses going everywhere).
  24. My girl has changed quite a bit in shading and pattern - some of the spots are now splotches and her colouring has faded in some areas - this is my first BN so not sure if this is quite common in the species
