  1. Best person I know of to contact is Seahorsemad. She currently has around 9 seahorses and just recently baby seahorses. There is a post in the saltwater section with regards to getting started with seahorses.

    flounder

I know of an estuary on private property that has flounder in it. I have been spearing for flounder in it at Xmas time.
  3. good luck on the Seahorses. I have seen seahorsemad's tank and it looks great. she does have few babies as well and as far as I am aware tehy are doing well. She is good at any questions you may want answered
  4. As MGilchrist said the only way to cure this disease is to buy more tanks. It's like smoking. you just can't go on without it
  5. Agood shop in Palmerston north is Wet Pets I hear. They seem to have a very large selection of Tropical fish and the staff are helpful. As others have said there is a wealth of information here and it is important that you take things slowly at first. Guppies breed like rabbits. look for females that have big bellies and soon you will have babies. I only got my guppies a week ago and already i have small fry swimming around my tank.

    flounder

Well dones seahorsemad now you just need to fatten them up. they are bottom feeders so will eat just about anything. they should be ok with sinking pellets.
  7. the peppered catfish will do ok in cold water. I have a friend that has 4 of them in a cold water tank. I myself have 2 Hoplo catfish that are tropical but they are very happy in a cold water tank.
  8. Just been at Jansens this afternoon and saw that they had just received a delivery of a lot of corals and anenomes. Sorry can't tell you what they are as not into marine YET Lots and lots of bags of all kinds.
  9. In my experience I just dropped them in the pond and left them to it. If it has been fine and warm the pond temp should be similar to the temp in your tank. My fish adjust better from inside to outside than they do outside to inside.
  10. There are quite a selection to chose from: Bigger species Oranda Lion Head Fantails Celestials Bubble Eye Commets. Smaller Species Rosy Barbs Danios (Zebra etc) algae eaters (great to eat algae off the glass) Hoplo catfish (will survive in cold as well) Peppered catfish It really depends on what you like.
  11. Cold water goldfish Jansens Mt Eden seem to have a variety at the moment. Hollywoods do not have much in the way of Fancy Goldfish Tropical Jansens Mt Eden Hollywood fish farm Both of which have a nice selection.

  13. Stone & Water World 218A Marua Rd Ellerslie I bought some Glacier (white) pebbles from them this week and it cost me around $30 for 15 Litres Autumn Harvest is the same price. You should check them out.

    Lighting

Norwester I have only just set up my tropical tank 1200 x 450 x 450 and I am using 2 tubes. one white for plants and one red for colour. and using 4ft tubes x 40 watts each currently Hollywoods in Auckland is having a sale, so I got mine for $130 including tubes. The staff did recommend me getting power glo tubes at $35 each which they said are really good so I told them I will once the ones with the light go. So bright it lights up my living room so saving on power.
  15. Gila Fish thanks for the ideas and yes I have got the plants you have mentioned but unfortunately I need more. Blue Ram: Yes I did get some good ideas from the tank crawl Seahorsemad: yep nearly lost my culture of daphnia at the round about but they seem to be happy and breeding in the bath tub now. Checked out the tank last night and everything is within parameters (nitrites, ph, amonia etc) anchored the drift wood down and now in the process of getting a few more fishies and a lot more plants. Just need to reduce the cloudiness of the tank which I think will happen by itself at the end of the week.
  16. You lucky devil KribKrazy. Congrats on the new borns. now you can set up your own Angel shop and sell them.
  17. Hi All Thought I'd Let you know that I have just got my second tank and looking at using it for Tropicals. I have used an existing Fluval 303 that has been running on an existing 3ft tank to build up the bacteria in the canister for the past month and have got good aged (slightly green) water from a bath tub that was outside to fill the new tank up with. I have mixed new pebbles with half of the pebbles from my existing cold water tank so that there is bacteria that is transferred. and have transferred 6 Mountain minnows and 2 Hoplo catfish into the tank as well. Do you think I will still need to wait a while to cycle the tank? What plants are good in a tropical tank? All input greatfully accepted.
  18. from what i have seen from the other postings about brineshrimp you cannot use normal table salt. your lfs has salt that u use in your aquarium. you will need a constant bubbling to hatch the shrimp. the eggs arent supposed to settle down.
  19. I agree with the other 2 you should slope the gravel so that when you are sitting on the sofa you can see the fish Otherwise nice setup. I like what you did with the rocks. Got any bristlenose in there?
  20. go to your lfs and buy some eggs and raise them yourself. you can buy frozen brineshrimp as well from your lfs
  21. As others have said you have cleaned the tank too much. Amonia and Nitrates would be the culprits in killing the 2 fish. just relax now and let time work in your favour in building up the good bacteria. use stress zyme to help with the bacteria and use AquaPlus to remove chlorine when you do a 20% water change on a fortnightly cycle
  22. Dogmatix i can sense that you are getting into a good roll at the moment with your discus breeding so rampantly. What are you feeding them... Rabbits?
  23. I've had the same problem with algae when my tank was next to a window. I was told to use phoszorb which you place in your filter and it takes out the phosphates in the water. worked a little bit but because of the direct sunlight had problems getting algae under control. I eventually moved it away from the window. so not problem now. another idea is to chuck some daphnia in to the tank. They supposedly enjoy the green algae and the fish enjoy the daphnia.
