  1. No skimmer yet; I'm waiting for it to arrive. I should have it set up by the end of the week, and the fish will be in a bigger tank too. From the little bit of research I've down on RO units, they seem mega expensive. How much would an average one be? Also, I kind of remember hearing somewhere that an RO unit gets the same things out of the water as a UV thing in the filter; is this true?
  2. Yup. I'm going to be making the leap to marine in a month or so. Maybe no RO water is why my glass gets covered in algae in all of 2 days?
  3. Do I really need an RO unit? What exactly does it do? My tank is SG 1.018 right now and I'm not using an RO unit atm.
  4. How do you split it? How do you attach it? I have so many questions.
  5. So we're ruling out the bristlenose for a salty tank then? Is there some other cleaner something I can put in? Maybe I need to start my own thread. Just out of interest, was your new coral expensive? That's my biggest concern with extending my tank to full marine
  6. In a salty tank? It's about 1.018sg
  7. What's your trick to keeping the glass clean? Do the tube/bristleworms do it? My almost full marine tank gets disgustingly dirty in about 2 days and I'm sick to death of cleaning the glass every 5 minutes.
  8. I completly agree, and I think most importantly you can't take it out on the first person you see; I always make an effort to be polite to whoever I speak to, because it may or may not be their fault. If you're polite, you're much more likely to get the results you're looking for.
  9. If you don't like the discussions, don't participate. These discussions extend to so much more than just fish shops. The discussions are about the service industry in it's entirety; an issue that in New Zealand (with the majority of our sectors involved in services) is a major concern. If you can't see that, or don't care, don't participate.
  10. billaney, could you please post some pics?
  11. Yup. Totally astounding and shocking. The best thing ever is when a fish has died and the others are eating the dead one. They say 'oh, that's just what they do'. Yeah, when you LEAVE THE DEAD FISH IN THE TANK!!! They make no effort to take the fish out. Agh, it annoys me so much!

Guess you missed this post was made in 2005 too, then?
  13. Good on you for being brave enough to go through it. I held both my cats when they got put down a few years ago, and it was incredibly hard to do. However, looking back at their pain and suffering, I'm really glad I let them both go. I'm sure they weren't in pain as they died, and it made me better to know that they were no longer suffering.
  14. I've been trying to breed my BN for nearly 2 years now with no success. I reluctantly gave up, thinking my 2 females were sterile or just not interested. I made them so many caves, redesigned my tank, used pure rain water, planted, unplanted, changed lighting time; everything. About a month ago, I gave up and just started to enjoy them. Well, what do you know, 3 weeks ago, I looked into the tank, and realized that there was daddy fish with a big bunch of eggs. They've all grown into busy little things rushing around the tank. Then, I looked in the tank again on saturday, and saw that daddyfish has MORE eggs!! I've also been ignoring my lionhead cichlids, and went down yesterday and there are 2 lots of babies in their tank! So, maybe the moral of the story is just chill out, sit back and let them do their thing. You never know what might happen!
  15. I can't do it that way, the few times I've tried, I made a massive mess. I don't really have a problem with it, and I don't really see the difference between a few drops of water on the outside of the bag and the water on the net or on the fish.
  16. I agree, if I'm going to get a dog with a questionable background, I'd go for SPCA ones. Otherwise, I'd go directly to a breeder.
  17. I'm not entirely sure if I should be congratulating you or sending my condolences. Another kid = less money on fish, and you're absolutely going to go crazy!! But I guess in a few years you'll have someone to clean the dishes and mow the lawn, so let's call him an investment, huh? Congrats to you all (especially mum, but I bet you did an awesome job getting ice chips or whatever!)
  18. I keep a container outside, and add some of my w/c water, and leaves off the plants in my tank, left over food etc. You'll know if it goes off if it goes from green to red and smells like a small animal crawled in it and died.
  19. The tank is 200L, and I have a sump but am looking at upgrading it from 50L to 100L ish. I think I have a skimmer now thanks to someone from here, so if someone can give me the lowdown on where an in sump skimmer goes and any other important bits I need to know that would be muchly appreciated.

    Thermostats

What are you using it for?
  21. Where did you find the ants and eggs, and how did you catch them?
  22. They usually breed all at once, so if you have more than 1 female in there, it's likely that the eggs are from more than 1 cory. That's about the number my 2 females lay.
  23. My cat's on antibiotics right now and she hates having pills, so I've been giving her some fish flakes with her tab, and she'll happily gobble it down. Makes for a stress free way to give medication!
  24. Man that sucks so much. That reminds me though, a few weeks ago I was going to a flat viewing, and as I drove up the road, I saw 11 cars with smashed windows that were parked on the street. Needless to say, I declined the flat. Luckily, I've never been broken into, but I can sympathize; it sucks that the damages aren't covered. I know that if my car was broken into, I simply wouldn't have the money to repair the window more than once.
  25. Yep, but be careful boiling stones, they can scrape the bottom of your pots. It's much easier to scrub them then leave them out in the sun to dry. The sun and scraping will kill anything left on them.
