  1. http://uwnews.org/article.asp?articleID=47496 This thing is amazing, it's a type of angler fish that has no lure.
  2. You mean as well as crickets? I'm trying to do all my research about everything well before I get them, and I want to get set up with feeders too, so any advice would be much appreciated. Can we get phoenix worms here? They seem to be well regarded overseas. Maybe I need Mincie for this? Ok, is there a way I can feed crickets without touching them?
  3. Nah, I try to avoid packet food as much as I can because it's so expensive and they're little piggies! I'd much rather feed them up on cheaper food, but I'll keep a lookout for it. What does the packet look like?
  4. Apparently roaches are better than crickets, and they don't jump (or as far as I can tell, fly). I'm not sure if you can get them in NZ though.
  5. Dave&Amy, what do you feed your baby? I can't stand the idea of anything that jumps or flies.
  6. Are you serious? How on earth do you deal with that? Do we have dubia roaches here? Is there any type of other non-jumping and non-flying food I can feed them?
  7. Thanks. How do all you people cope with feeding crickets? How do you pick them up when they jump everywhere?
  8. I like to give my fish a varied diet, and was wondering what sorts of interesting food you feed them? Is there any reason why I can't feed them dried fruit; raisins, apricots, dried banana?
  9. Who on here breeds beardies? I'm getting myself sorted for one in a few months and need to know who I can contact about one when I need one. I want to get a baby so I can bond with it when it's little, and have one who's happy about being handled. Also, I've read posts about people shipping them; out of interest, how do you do it?
  10. Yup, I agree, there's a boy and girl. Look at the little sticky out things under their tummies, the black one's is wider and has a more blunt bottom, thats what she uses to lay her eggs. She'll swim against a vertical surface and rub her belly against it. The eggs kinda roll out. Then the male will follow up behind and fertilize them. The males pointy bit is thinner, and more pointed on the bottom. The male tends to do most of the protecting of the eggs and babies, but the female will hang around too. To get them to lay, feed them up on good food (bloodworm, daphinia, etc), and do lots of small water changes to get their water in good condition (10 - 20% a day). The female will get nice and fat, then one day, you'll see her pointy bit sticking out. If not and she's looking fat, do a big waterchange (40 - 50%), they'll get in the mood. Often they eat their first few batches of eggs, so don't be discouraged. If you can, let them raise them, they're so cool to watch as parents. The eggs hatch in 4 - 6 days depending on temp (the hotter the tank, the quicker they hatch) and they turn into wigglers. You don't need to feed them, and if you do any water changes, do it through your sump, or add your water very slowly, as they tend to float away. After a few days of this (3 - 5) they'll start swimming. Feed them micro worms, BBS, decaps - anything really small. Don't be alarmed if the parents pick the babies up in their mouths and spit them out, that's what they do. They don't start looking like angelfish for a really long time, so don't thing they're mutant fish!
  11. Yup the rubber thing is still on it, and the ceramic shaft is fine too. Approx how much am I looking for one of these things?
  12. My cats eat cicadias too, and we've found my cat curled up sleeping in the fridge on more than one occasion. One of them also likes daphnia, she's always fishing them out of my breeding tub.
  13. If he's just doing it occasionally, he's probably just got an itch. If he's doing it often, he might have fluke worms. Do a search on how to treat them.
  14. I now have some droncit to worm my fish, but I'm just looking for confirmation of how exactly to do it. I figure I just dissolve some of the tablet in water, then soak frozen food in it. Any input, or proper methods?
  15. OK Caryl, if I write an article and email it to you, is there a deadline I have to have it in by?
  16. Ok, well I took it apart and everything looked fine, no blockages or anything. It was pumping a little bit of water, but making this horrible noise. I took it apart and dried off all the pump bits, and noticed that the shaft is loose in the impeller. It looks like it's worn down on one side, so I guess that's what the noise is. Thanks for all your help guys, now, can anyone tell me where I can get a new impeller before this noise drives me insane?
  17. Alright, so I collected about 200 of them, and popped about 5 in my puffer tank. I've never seen them move so fast, they gobbled them up, and I kept feeding until they got nice and fat (about 100 of them!). I fed the rest to my lionhead cichlids, who had a tougher time with the hard shells, but loved them too. So, there went my 200 slaters, I better go and get some more! I'm going to set up some breeding boxes (I breed them for a 7th form biology project a few years ago, so know how). I'd be happy to do a walkthrough for those of you who don't know, so just post in here if you want me to, and I'll post it for you.
  18. My Eheim 2215 is making horrible grinding noises like it's not primed properly. I've cleaned it, reprimed it, checked for air bubbles, checked the shaft and impeller, what else can I check before I switch it off and loose all my media?
  19. I've knocked myself out by opening car doors into my head about 4 times. It's so embarrassing, especially because I've done it multiple times!
  20. Hold the syphon above the sand, the crap tends to sit on the top because it can't fall between the grains. If you're worried about loosing lots of sand, top of and rinse what's in your bucket a few times, and just put the sand back in the tank.
  21. Sweet, PMed, thx so much
  22. How many mg are in each tab? I need to treat a 100 L tank and treat 2 fish orally, so I guess I need about 12 grams.
  23. I can't find any Droncit, my vet told me they don't supply it anymore. Can I use Drontal? I remember reading somewhere that I couldn't, but I don't know why. Or I could use Milbemax, that has prazi and milbemycin oxime in it.
  24. Sorry, Stella. Seems like you might be the resident expert on this one.
