  1. I use the eftpos card method too, and it's great. That green dot algae; my BNs aren't eating it; it it because they're full of all the other algae in the tank, or is it too tough for them to eat?
  2. I don't think you should add any antibiotics until you know what you're treating. Maybe post a pic of the affected fish? W/Cs are good right now, regardless of whether your tank is low in oxygen, has white spot or fin rot. Make sure you're either leaving the water to sit out for 24hrs before putting it in the tank, or dechlorinating it before putting it in.
  3. Do a 50% water change. Lift your filter intake above the water to allow more gas exchange. Tomorrow, do another water change. They're probably struggling with low oxygen because of the heat. How big is your tank?
  4. When she says pretty fast, she means more like in 12hrs food can go off (especially frozen food or fresh meat/seafood) which can start bacteria multiplying, causing massive ammonia problems.
  5. I like http://www.nobodylikesonions.com/forums It's the forum to a podcast I listen to. It's a great show, pretty edgy comedy and definitely not for people who have a problem with bad taste jokes or questionable language.
  6. Thanks, I don't feed my fish freeze dried tubiflex because I noticed my guppies were a lot more prone to wasting disease when I was feeding it. I hope that this female is just a one off, but I have done a salt treatment (baths and in the tank) and, touch wood, they seem ok now.
  7. Personally, it's not my style; I tend to go for a more natural look, rather than shop bought shipwrecks and novelty things. However, I appreciate that you've got live plants in there, it's awesome to have a good variety and it's so satisfying to see them growing and getting tall and healthy! If it were my tank, I'd tend to choose a theme; in your case, maybe pirates. Designing a tank around a theme, although it sounds completely over the top, can actually turn out quite cool. I've seen a picture somewhere where the tank was decorated like a candy land, with the backdrop pictures as jellybeans, ridiculously outrageous decorations, complete with a fake chocolate waterfall. It wasn't something I'd do myself, but it looked so awesome, so maybe you'd be interested in doing something similar with a different theme? It could become a pretty awesome art piece.
  8. They can last a long time without eating, sometimes up to a month, or even more. It really depends on their size. It can stay in the salty water, because it's not much salt. Just make sure to do at least daily water changes, and replace the salt that you take out with the water change. The salt helps build up their slime coat to keep their outsides protected, and it can help heal wounds too.
  9. I'd be seriously looking at putting him in something bigger than a plastic bag, if whatever's wrong with him doesn't kill him, the stress of being in a bag will. Even a plastic tub on the floor wrapped in a blanket to keep it up to temp will do. Add a 1/2 a teaspoon of salt per litre of water, it will help heal his fins from the nips. If his fins are damaged, he might be having trouble swimming.
  10. Nah, it doesn't look like an injury because you'd expect the scales to be damaged too. Its a mystery. Everything else is fine, and I've been keeping up the water changes, so I'm confident that they'll all be ok.
  11. I'd go for more places for it to hide, rather than more fish first. Generally, if they've got lots of places to hang out they tend to feel safer and come out more.
  12. Thats a pretty good enclosure, you could modify it pretty easily. How do you plan on getting power to your enclosure? Running an outdoor lead? Maybe you want to look at building a removable lid on the indoor side instead of a hinge, it would be easier to clean and aerate.
  13. You could try going to the SPCA, sometimes they can help in cases of stolen animals. If it's purebreed, or from a breeder, the breeder would probably be able to make a proper ID on it. I guess you'd have to get the police involved or something. Good luck.
  14. 24 packs of export are on sale at woolworths for $10 off until Sunday. I think they're $24.00 now.
  15. Isn't that stuff expensive? What's actually in cat/dog biscuits? Are they good for the reptiles? Reckon I could feed mealworms biscuits?
  16. Get a nail gun. It's lots of fun. I think I'm going to build a rabbit hutch just to use it. I guess then I could get a rabbit, right?
  17. If you're looking at getting one, GMC is going out of business and all the GMC stuff at bunnings is ridiculously cheap. I got a $200 nail gun today for $50 for s**ts and giggles.
  18. All the other fish seem totally normal. That one had fry on Saturday, so I wonder if she was weakened by that?
  19. Animates has a 50% off sale on eheims. At least the one in Wellington does. Started today.
  20. I did a 30% water change last night, and 50% today when I found it dead, but the ammonia's been sitting on 0. The test kit works, because it picked up ammonia in my snail tank. My ammonia, nitrate and nitrite are all at 0, pH is 6.6 which is normal for the tank. I thought it looked like ammonia or pH burn too, but it's not around the gills, just on the sides, almost like it scraped on something. The scales aren't damaged at all though, so I'm not sure what's going on
  21. A guppy died of this today. Water quality, pH, temp all perfect. It was looking a little sad last night, so I added some salt. Today it looked like this: http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp88/laurenmariesmith/DSCF2017.jpg http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp88/laurenmariesmith/DSCF2018.jpg http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp88/laurenmariesmith/DSCF2019.jpg http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/pp88/laurenmariesmith/DSCF2020.jpg Everything else in the tank looks fine, so any ideas?
  22. Just remember, if you ask people at hardware stores, they won't be able to tell you a product that's animal safe (have to save their own behind) so don't be surprised if they can't actually recommend something at a store.
  23. Regardless of whether he's sick or just needs to be seperated, my advice is to get another tank. Even a small one or plastic container with a heater in it will do, you have to get it out of there. Is it eating or pooping?
  24. Shrimp/prawns are good for wearing down teeth
