I think the 500ml (and 2L) bottles of prime may be better value? Although comparing product prices from a retail store that stocks fish and livestock to a TradeMe garage trader is hardly a fair comparison..
-
Agreed, but I also don't see why you would......
-
I don't even use it at that strength, I put 5ml in my 220L barrel and then add another 50-200L of tap water depending on which tank it is (250-400L total WC)...

Maybe give fishkeeping a break and join a golf club or take up skiing, might not seem so expensive after that! How big is your house? How many people live there? What other power-sucking appliances do you have? How long do you spend in the shower? It doesn't sound at all bad (mine is considerably more, with two people and ~2600L of tanks), and I think if you work out how many Watts per day its using (with the lights on 10 hours and the heaters working about 14 hours) and multiply that by the "kilowatt hour" rate on your power bill you'll find its not all that much.

:Ira: nope not working yet...

hmm 40cm+ fish in a 30cm high tank...........
-
Yeah I missed the part about the other dimensions too. 80cm wide is great for an aro, 30cm high not so much.... Ally I cut a hole in my wall so i could put the sump on the other side of it to keep the noise in the fishroom down. Something tells me the OP might need to wait til he owns his own house before doing that, I know my parents would have drawn the line and me bashing holes in walls despite being very tolerant of my hobbies!! :sml1:

   Always wanted an indoor pond big enough to have a huge group of large central american cichlids living, breeding and raising fry naturally. Five metres would be pretty close to that depending on the width!! Let me know when its getting close to finished and I'll put aside a batch of festae fry to help populate it

Did you do any research on the links I posted (or ryanjurys one)? There are countless ways to do a "sump" and so many variables that you need to work out for your application if you want it to work well. Its one of those things that you really need to learn for yourself rather than asking people to spoon-feed you the information and hoping you get it right. Why do you want a sump? Mechanical filtration? Bilolgical or other filtration? Increased capacity? Sole method of filtration or working in conjunction with something else? How heavily stocked is your tank going to be? How much media does it need to hold? What other equipment needs to go in there? How big a return pump will you be using? How much flow/turn over? Will the size hole you have in your overflow be sufficient for that? How big is the skim from your overflow? How much spare capacity will the sump need to hold this when the power is switched off? Do you want to drill the sump for an auto water changer or continuous drip system? How much room do you have under your tank/stand? How much noise can you handle the sump making? I could post plans and dimensions for all sorts of different sumps (or you could find the many times I've already posted them with a quick search) but unless you have run through all those questions then chances are they might not be suitable for your application. That is why I'm saying do the research yourself rather than just asking what to do.... :sage:

You're right Geoff, although they haven't been spawned without hormones in captivity people have reported increased predation and aggression towards tankmates coupled with what is likely to be courtship. A guppy would eat a shark if its mouth was big enough....

Here's a great example of a ~3000L (2.7x1.2x1.0M) ply/fibreglass tank with big CA's; http://youtu.be/WSBGNn_Odbk Doesn't look like many fish but bear in mind that jag is 40cm!! More pics here. Could do something similar (obviously without the pearsei and bocourti), maybe even have a few breeding pairs of the smaller species to liven it up a bit. If you weren't concerned about keeping it strictly CA you could add some big synos and/or an aro at the top... and if anyone is keen to make one, here's how; http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forum ... p?t=319933

Probably much easier to export yourself to the US...
-
Central american cichlid community? Jag, festae, red devil/midas, JD, convict, salvini, vieja etc, big rock pile for fry to hide in, would be interesting to see pairs defending territories and breeding in a tank that size...

Length is only part of the equation, the extra 2' doesn't mean jack if its still only 60cm wide!
-
that REALLY doesn't change the fact that even the smallest arowana is going to get to over 60cm if housed properly. My green was looking big in my 180x75x60 tank after only two years, even though Scleropages are often thought of as "smaller" than their south american cousins they still need a really large tank. Maybe you need to go visit henward to get a feel for how big a 50cm+ arowana really is, a 6x2x2 may seem like a huge tank to you but it really isn't adequate for keeping active fish that have the potential to get to 3'. There are plenty of cool "monster" fish you could keep in that tank; dats, bichirs, bgk, large cichlids (jag, festae), fire/tyre track eel, etc etc, just not an arowana. Be realistic. As for the sump, get reading.... http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forum ... y.php?f=29 http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forum ... .php?f=337

I've been there a couple of years ago, don't recall the frogs though. They're golden bells, I'll have a go at setting up the tank tomorrow [maybe] and post some pics!

red tail shark (Epalzeorhynchos bicolor), in a group?
David R replied to snookie's topic in Freshwater
There used to be four in the big tank at Northland Pet and Aquarium [the old shop] before Richard owned it. I reckon half a dozen in a 6'+ tank would be worth a shot. -
Mum has gone on holiday for a couple of months, she has two frogs that she had as tadpoles in her classroom [school teacher] and got attached to and couldn't get rid of. She had told dad to let them go after she'd left, but I said thats not such a good idea and have therefore inherited them!! We've got an empty 4x2x2 enclosure from our beardy which I'll set up for them, but I've got no idea what I'm doing! Do they need UV? Are flies a suitable staple diet? How much water should they have? What should I use for substrate and what kind of terrestrial plants are suitable? Anyone got a link to an idiots guide to keeping frogs?????
-
Chances are thats all he's going to tolerate; nothing. How soon are you planning on upgrading the tank? 60cm fish in a 60cm wide tank = maxed out IMO....
-
Aww she is quite spotty! ps. my last post was sarcasm, in case anyone was thinking of calling the SPCA...

Did you just buy one? It will be ok once added to the group of smaller ones but will probably sulk for a while during its solitary confinement. They do rest on their sides, its a normal part of their behavior. If I had a dollar for every time someone had said "you've got a dead fish" only to see the clown 'wake up' and scoot off... Having come from a larger group and being transferred to a new tank it will also be less active, more shy and less likely to eat. The bigger they are the longer they take to settle in. I'd suggest you add some coral or shell to the filter of the quarantine tank to help slowly bring the water closer to that of your main tank so its less of a shock when you transfer it over.
-
Feed a mixture of prepared, meaty and vege foods and you should be fine, the L140 will go for zucchini as P44 said, and the L270 should go more for shrimp and bloodworms. Both will eat a mix of prepared foods. ps. might want to rearrange your signature, it doesn't seem to be being enforced at the moment but the guidelines do state they're only supposed to be three lines long. It would be pretty awkward if everyone listed their fish vertically ion their sigs!!

I would beat her with a pipe if she poo'd inside and when she was naughty we would put her in a half full 44 gallon drum of water and put a lid on and make her tread water for an hour or two.

Looking good!!
