  1. 2400x600x600 in 10mm glass will be about half that, maybe less. The cost with glass increases if you go much wider than 2' as its harder to get offcuts that big and often required new glass. I'd be interested to see what they charge for 2400x900x600 (LxWxH).
  2. I wasn't buying it, I was just buying a few offcuts and asked about a price for a whole sheet out of curiosity and she said around $900 (IIRC).
  3. When I bought some small pieces of acrylic for building the drip tray in my sump I'm sure Mulfords quotes me about that for the same sized sheet in 25mm!! Maybe it was the prong price...
  4. No thats the one I got quoted $14k or something crazy for. I'm wondering about something smaller around the 1000-1500L mark, they said its not worth it compared to glass so I'm guessing it would also be quite pricey...
  5. Here's the crowd that quoted me $14k for the massive tank. Would be interested to see what sort of price they'd charge for something smaller... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pets-animals/Fish/Fish-tanks-aquariums/auction-377465094.htm
  6. Put them on a 45* angle? IIRC they actually recommend not using them in a vertical position.
  7. Yeah, must have been in Auckland too long!
  8. See if HFF can chuck one on a same-day courier? Only other place in Hamilton would be Goldfish Pagoda.
  9. Yeah $14k seems crazy, look at some of the sizes/prices in the link I posted, $4692US ($6k NZ) for 120x48x30", but I imagine shipping would cost a bomb. Glass would almost certainly be cheaper, I'll have to ask Greg next time I see him, but the problem with glass is that it would need to be made on site or moved with a hiab or forklift. Biggest downside with acrylic is that it scratches easier than glass, but on the up side you can repair the scratches, unlike glass.
  10. I got a quote from a place on trademe that was advertising a big 1/4 round acrylic tank and they seemed ridiculously expensive. I asked for a price for one the same as my biggest tank (240x98x62cm) and they asked why bother with such a small tank, so I asked for a price for one 10'x4'x30" (had just been looking at this US site selling acrylic tanks and that was about the largest size they did) and they quoted something like $14k saying it needed 40mm thick acylic. I'd be interested to find someone in NZ who makes large acrylic tanks as it seems like a good option for massive tanks, where as glass would have to be manufactured on site and would pretty much be immovable. But at the price they quoted it would be cheaper to ship one from the states with a couple of Ultima filters stuffed inside it for good measure!
  11. Awesome! I'd convert my big tank to a SWFO if I could get a big P. volitans! I know people who have seen them at the peak of summer while diving off the coast of Northland, doubt they'd last a winter though. They may be pests in warmer parts of the world where people have released them, but when they're spread naturally like this its not right to consider them an invasive pest, its just part of the natural ever changing world...
  12. Any big pieces of wood in there? I get a strong sulphur smell from my driftwood soaking barrell when there's lots of fresh wood in there and it sits in the sun too long without a water change.
  13. Maybe Serenity wasn't such a bad name given the red lipstick!!
  14. Soak and/or boil it first if you're concerned. I'm not sure about how much sap would be left in small branches shed by the three, but I think boiling would help.
  15. pound for pound not quite as nasty, in a decent sized tank (500L+) I'd say not too different to an oscar, maybe a little more territorial. Individuals do vary though, the LFS in Whangarei used to have one (mistakenly identified as a Jack Dempsey and therefore called Jack) in a 4' tank that was a serious glass banger, wouldn't tolerate anything else in the tank and tried to attack anything that walked past. Smidey or Snookie or Mcculloch might remember it, that fish was one of the reasons I fell in love with big cichlids...
  16. Fairly standard CA cichlid fare, aggression depends on tank size really. Wouldn't bother trying to keep anything more than a single male or pair in an average 4' tank, but in bigger tanks they can be successfully combined with other robust fish of similar size. Certainly wouldn't advice keeping a m/f pair as part of a community though! Great looking fish when they get a bit bigger, hopefully Duncan7 will post some pics of the big male he used to keep.
  17. General consensus on MFK and other international forums is that unless it comes from a quality supplier who can ensure its origins (Jeff Rapps, for example) then its a flowerhorn. There are obvious signs (like the pearling) that indicate low-grade FH and not trimac, but there are some very trimac-looking FH's out there, which is why its safer to assume they aren't the real thing unless you know for sure. Shame really, IMO trimacs are gorgeous fish and I'd love to keep a big stocky male as part of a big CA community some time. Apparently they were here a long time ago (before FH's were around) but I'd say your chances of finding a true one here now are slim to none... Interesting thread on the subject: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=384294
  18. Can't imagine that would have gone down too well with all its pointy fins and sharp bits!
  19. I said HIPPY, not happy!!! :sml1: :sml1: :sml1:
  20. Supermarkets will have it in sometimes, its luck of the draw really as they don't usually get much in.
