  1. Did you soak them first, or boil them?
  2. On the subject of candid childrens programs, does anyone remember Rainbow? I actually remember the episode where they made the twangers!!
  3. Don't let a couple of hours drive and a broken car get in the way of a great concert like this!!
  4. Wait a few more weeks, or find someone with a well-established canister filter you can borrow.
  5. Apparently not. I thought you needed to be 13 or older to register for most forums...
  6. What about if they're the australian ones? We've got hundreds running around at work, the only difference AFAIK is the aussies lay eggs and the native ones have live young.
  7. Aussie lungfish, snake heads, barramundi, red tailed catfish... Solar would be pretty good, but I think you'd want some form of back up thats capible of keeping it warm on a long cold winters night.
  8. Yeah, realistically I'd never be able to afford to build a tank like that, let alone run it and feed all the massive fish! I'm planning on about 8-9'x4'x30" for the pond, partially because thats the size of the free glass, and partially because anything much bigger will be way too expensive! The good thing with having 3 solid sides is that it can be insulated well to save on heating costs.
  9. It nearly seems like a waste doing it here. I'd love a huge indoor pond with tiger shovelnose and red tailed catfish, arapimas, gars, pacus etc. Auckland zoo or kelly larltons should do a massive amazon display...
  10. Did it say 'found' or 'described'? I guess they were refering to the latter, obviously the natives have [probably] known about them for years, but I doubt they gave them a latin name.
  11. Don't forget the added cost of a viewing window, it would be a shame not to put one in if you're making an above-ground pond. (otherwise just use a swimming pool if you only want to see them from the top) I'm planning on making an above-ground portable pond with the 8'x2' panel of glass I'm getting, once we're settled in our own home (which could be years away!) either from steel or timber. Have a look on the DIY forum at monsterfishkeepers.com there's some pretty massive home-made tanks/ponds there.
  12. Move to florida. BTW we can't get arapima's here so whats the point...
  13. Walk in and hand over $50. Talked to them this morning and they said it could be whitespot in the gills that is causing the scratching, so I've decided to keep up the treatment and wait a bit before panicking about gill flukes.
  14. Someone on MFK has a hunchback bichir. Its perfectly healthy and happy (other than the bent spine). I wouldn't put it down unless its having trouble swimming or eating. pic.
  15. Water already looks clearer this morning! 8)
  16. Cool!! If its uaru fry then put my name on half a dozen of them.
  17. Add some driftwood and some peat in the filter will help stop it rising. As spider suggested you'll need to do daily water changes for a while to help bring it back down.
  18. You could use plain black or blue coloured paper, but water will damage it.
  19. I usually spray the back in satin black before setting it up. Once its set up its impossible, which is why my 4' has no background...
  20. Not really, Billy and Jimmy are the two most important members by far, I'd compare it to a GNR show with Axl and Slash. Jimmy is irreplaceable as a drumer, the other two not so, Billy plays most of the lead guitar in all the live videos I've seen. IIRC D'arcy couldn't even play the bass before joining the band... I'll be there, was even thinking about flying to wellington or christchurch to see them twice! One of my biggest regrets of my teenage years is missing their show in 1996. Besides, I thought the GnR show last year was pretty good!
  21. No, I completely drain the sump when doing a water change then fill that up first so the water can warm up while I'm doing the gravel syphon. Doesn't really matter as the water is fairly warm at this time of year, last week the heater didn't even come on after I did a 20% water change! I've turned them up to 28C to try to speed up the life cycle. I'm suspecting flukes more now as I've noticed some of the loaches and my big dat who seem unaffected by the whitespot are scratching. Might go back to HFF to get some prazi unless anyone can recommend somewhere cheaper to get it?
  22. Just went to HFF and got one rated to 300L tank (or 3000L pond), so I hope it helps!
  23. I've been having on-going problems with whitespot and my clown loaches, not so much a big out-break but just a few spots coming up here and there, and the fish are often scratching on the gravel (sidetrack; how do I tell if that is from the ich or if its gill flukes?). I've been thinking about adding one of these to help try to combat it Is it worth the money or should I just keep up with the water changes, salt and whitespot cure stuff?
  24. Tell your mum if she's going to buy you fish then she should also buy you the proper equipment to house them! Seriously tho, I hope told her how irresponsible it is impulse-buying fish, especially large ones like that.
  25. Unless you can provide a photo of the fish with a tape measure I call B.S. Oscars don't get to 60cm, in fact they don't get much over 30cm (generally). They grow really fast to around 25cm then slow down from there. A 300L tank would be fine for an oscar and a jd, I'd avoid getting twos of things unless you're prepared to deal with them if/when they start breeding.
