  1. I've just had a steel stand made for my 630L tank, its made from 30mm box section and has eight legs. It is 70cm wide and 90cm high. It appears to have a very slight twist in it, on the level concrete floor in the room where its going one corner leg is about 5mm off the ground. I got two of my flatmates (who are only around 60kg) to stand on the diagonally opposite corners and it levels itself out easily with that much weight (probably less than 1/10th the weight of the full tank). Is this normal, or something to I should be concerned about? Will the weight of the tank and water sort out the slight unevenness or will it put enough pressure on the tank to stress and crack it? The tank is made from 12mm glass and is well braced.
  2. Not quite. They were fine one day, then gf came home from work to find one with another ones foot in its mouth! After that we separated them and never looked back. The middle three toes of the front right foot were stuck together and kinda dead looking, and after a few visits to Lynfield vets (can't remember the guys name unfortunately) we decided to operate to remove the three fingers. Once the vet had scraped off the dead skin he discovered there was still circulation so he didn't amputate, and just cleaned them up and separated them. A few warm salty baths later they were almost completely better, and he only ended up losing the tip of one of the fingers. That guy at Lynfield vets is great, I'd definitely recommend him to anyone with lizards.
  3. What are the other fish in the other fish in the first arapima pic? Looks kinda like a lungfish (african?) and wallago catfish and a big gar? Cool pics, its nearly enough to make me want to move....

  5. Haha! I'm getting sick of mine, aside from the AT the only indo thats stable is the smallest one that is at the bottom of the pecking order!!
  6. I've read they can be fussy but mine seems to eat anything and everything. Maybe its taking a while to settle in? I think they feel more confident when they have other active fish around.
  7. Just keep a very close eye on them. We started off with three and ended up with one, and were very lucky he isn't missing half of his front foot....
  8. Yeah you don't know them, I was actually referring to the neighbours next door to work. There's nothing like working hard on a hot friday while you listen to the neighbours get on the piss from about 10am, laughing and singing while you're sweating and longing for 5pm....
  9. Well what the GST is costing me is probably less than the cost of having to make a special trip to manukau to give him the deposit for the steel, so I'm not worried. I'll do my bit for the dole bludgers next door....
  10. I've got a steel stand coming for my 150x70x60 tank, I'm going to put a piece of ply on top between the stand and the polystyrene, what thickness should I go for? Obviously thicker is better, but when does it become excessive? Also, what thickness polystyrene do I need?
  11. Just spoke to him, and it was $450 cash, if I actually drove out there and gave him the cash, but because I did an internet transfer for the deposit he has to pay gst on it. Oh well, at least its ready tomorrow, not in three weeks + like the other place quoted!
  12. Last week I was given a quote to build a steel stand for my new 5' tank, he said
  13. Sounds cool!! Port Douglas is awesome, I'd love to go back there again. There was a good public aquarium in Cairns too.
  14. No idea sorry, but you might get a better/faster answer if you put something a little more descriptive than "hi" in the subject line.
  15. I've got a heap of similar shots from my trip there about 10 years ago, also taken with a disposable under water camera. The big fish in the first pic with the hump are cool. Its definitely better in real life, we saw a whale shark when we were there! It was just after we'd got out of the water, the guide on the boat said he's only seen them 3-4 times in the 15 years he's been going out there.
  16. I've got a couple of scars from our one. And today I was leaning into our beardys tank thru the front doors trying to get his tiles level and I singed my hair on it!! Burnt hair stinks too!

    Oscars

Could be alright with young oscars, but not long-term. I'd say any semi-aggressive cichlids could make good tank mates, larger catfish, dats, large barbs, silver dollars etc. Anything big enough to avoid being eaten, bold enough to compete for food, and not completely wimpy (or exceptionally aggressive).
  18. Damned if I'm feeding my fish trout!! My big carnivores get a mix of beef heart, shrimp and frozen discus tucker (which has greens, garlic, and other good stuff in it). I cut all the fat off it, and the membranes around the valves etc so really all they get is the inside meat. Its quite wasteful, but its so cheap it doesn't matter.
  19. Henward I don't think a gap is going to help unless its 50cm+. My 20" black aro could hit both ends of my 5' tank 5-6 times in a matter of seconds if it got spooked in the middle of the night, they are big, fast fish, and can jump over a metre out of the water easily.
  20. I'm aware that its important on a wooden floor, but what about on a concrete floor in a garage? I was reading a thread on MFK where a guy had four tanks (around 900gallons) on industrial pallet racks, with only four legs on a concrete floor. With that weight they were discussing if it would be enough to 'punch thru' the concrete, but decided it probably wasn't.
  21. My five clown loaches all come up and eat cichlid gold off the surface. When I got some new loaches they had obviously never seen this before and didn't know what was going on. With in a few day watching the others they learned how to do it, slowly and cautiously at first, but after a while they were up there fast, clicking away scoffing the pellets down like the rest of them. Definitely very intelligent, sometimes I wonder who's watching who...
  22. I guess thats why we're not allowed to discuss politics etc here.....
  23. Henward; so does the water flow straight from the main tank onto the bio media? Wouldn't that clog it up with crap really fast? I have to rinse my filter wool weekly and replace it fortnightly because of the amount of stuff it catches.

What fish do you have? I've fed cos lettuce to uaru and silver dollars, zucchini to plecos, and my sister feeds peas to her siamese fighters.
