  1. Jade/money trees will need bright light if indoors, would be good for an outdoor enclosure though. There are other cacti/succulents you could use, Lithops sp need about as little water as anything, Crassula sp are fairly tough but harmless, many Sulcorebutia sp have short flat spines that would be harmless to the lizard, but all will require good light. Haworthia sp should also work. check out http://cacti.co.nz/plant_list_full.asp for more info (and the best range of mail order succulents in NZ!).
  2. Contrary to popular belief, african cichlids will not drop dead if the pH goes below 8. There's many people keeping big healthy frontosa in with all sorts of other big fish on MFK, in "normal" water. I'd suggest running the pH around 7.2-7.5 and everyone should be happy, and the only real problem will be that nagging thought in the back of your head that the sev would look much better with some earth eaters than with mbuna....
  3. 10mm all round may be a little overkill but you could get away with smaller euro-style bracing on the top.
  4. First one is a piece of cake, if you can pronounce Sjoestedt that is! Ask someone Dutch/German/whatever how to pronounce that name, then add i to the end of it. I'll hazard a guess at the second one; a-fee-o-sem-e-on ??
  5. Latin is easy once you know a little bit about it, a lot of it is pronounced as it looks. Cyphotilapia - cy-fo-ti-lip-e-a Pseudotropheus - sue-doh-tro-fee-us Anything with a non-Latin name is prononced as it usually would be; Nyassachromis - Ny-ass-a-kro-miss Uaru fernandezyepezi looks like a mouthfull, but really its just Fernandez Yepez with an i on the end. The suffix ii can either be pronounced as ee-i or just as a single i. Polypterus weeksii could be said weeks-ee-i or weeks-i, depending on which is easier. And for the Sp. Ssp. Spp. Aff. etc; Q. What does sp mean? A. It is an abbreviation of the word species. Aloe sp. means an Aloe of as-yet-unknown identity. Note that species is singular, there is no such thing as a specie! Q. What does spp mean? A. It is an abbreviation to signify species plural. e.g. "There are several Aloe spp. to be found on this hillside". Note that species is the plural of species as well as the singular. Q. What does ssp mean? A. It is an abbreviation of the word subspecies. A subspecies is a lesser rank within a species. Q. What does cf. mean? A. It stands for 'compare with'. Aloe cf. ferox means an Aloe that is possibly within Aloe ferox or else is closely related. Q. What does aff. mean? A. It stands for 'has an affinity with'. e.g. Aloe aff. ferox means an Aloe that is closely related to Aloe ferox, but is of an as yet undetermined or undescribed identity. Q. What does 'English Words' mean? A. When we see appended to the genus or species name some English words (not Latin) with single quotes around them as in Genus species 'English Words' it tells us that the plant is a named hybrid or cultivar (cv.). For these names Latin is not allowable. Sometimes they are formally described by botanists in prestigious journals (e.g. Tavarorbea 'Red Leopard' by Dr. Colin Walker in New Zealand Cactus and Succulent Journal) and sometimes they are informally named by nurseries, breeders, or hobbyists (as in Gasteraloe 'Green Hysteria' named during NZ's great GM debate of 2003). stolen from here, free plug for Coromandel Cacti....
  6. And a big clock hanging around your neck!
  7. How big are the oscars? Space might not be an issue now but it will be soon. I'd suggest removing the aggressor for a couple of days and adding some dither fish, rainbows, giant danios, etc.
  8. I think thats a bit OTT given that he hasn't put out much since the late 90's. IMO not quite up there with the likes of the beatles, elvis, bob dylan (yeah I know he's not dead!), but certainly the king of pop...

    Angelfish tank?

My Peru Altums (not true altums) are in a 60cm deep tank, that should be a good size for life, but deeper wouldn't hurt. 50cm would be them minimum IMO.
  10. Paul Henry is a legend... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWtfbN5af4c&feature=fvw
  11. I love watching it, but am to old/fat/unfit/stuffed back to do it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVQNt64PxfE <- has to be one of the best videos I've seen, takes a little while to get into it, but there's some amazing stuff from about 2.00 onwards
  12. Bingo, CITES only takes wild populations into consideration, which is why asian arowanas are still CITES 1 despite being bred in their millions for the aquarium hobby.
  13. Its a sweet build, but JohnPTC's 10k gallon tank makes it look a little small... http://animal.discovery.com/videos/most ... arium.html
  14. Great looking tank Andrew! I wish I could get pics like that of my fish, I might have to commission you some day...
  15. What LFS do you go to? I think Hollywood have had some every time I've been in there over the past 10 years...
  16. Try PMing Hollywood fish farm, they have both in stock and AFAIK they can ship.
  17. heckeliis of "juripari" would be fine with the acaras, they can handle themselves with most medium sized cichlids, keholes, other geophagus (except for brasiliensis, which isn't really a Geophagus anyway), angels, uaru, severums, etc should all be fine, although depending on the size of your tank you should probably stay away from some of the larger growing ones.
  18. Can someone tell those of us who still use glass tanks how big is an "Aqua One UFO 880" is?
  19. Ah, you're Haydens mum, Paul had better watch out if he comes to that track day, he's an animal on that Taupo track!
  20. I don't get it, no matter how much you spend on a bike you won't be able to thrash it at the track on sunday, pick up the groceries on the way home, and then drive it to work on a rainy monday morning with out getting wet.
  21. I'd suggest testing the water, that should give you an indication of if its a mini cycle or just murky water. Either way I'd suggest increasing the filtration to around 8-10 times turn over if you need to do such large frequent water changes.
  22. Nice one, no wonder the general public hate anyone driving a modified japanese car.  Hans you got any lap times for the day?
  23. 5 times per hour isn't very much unless the tank is lightly stocked, how many fish are in the tank and how big are they? The water change regime seems overkill to me, but I'm sure some discus nuts would disagree, perhaps you caused a mini-cycle?
