  1. mmmmmmmmmm algae I just put some platys and mollies out for the summer as an experiment and they are going nuts eating daphnia. Found a website http://www.goodeiden.de/html/temperatures.html listing that some livebearers can handle a danish winter outside so I think my feeder fish are worth trying. They appear to be enjoying it for the moment anyway
  2. coolies. Can you chuck them in the pond in summer (if you have a pump for lots of O2?) Never really appreciated them until this thread!
  3. reckon they would get on with my leopardfishies (P.caudimaculatus)? I was thinking of how they like the slightly cooler than most tropical temps, and the strong current
  4. button fern african violet (the mini ones) - not tooo close to the water as splashing will mess them up but they love the humidity ficus pumila and a HUGE +1 to babys tears its ideal if you have room syngonium asplenium
  5. I make super-nice bird bells and treats - very different from the normal commercial product - and currently sell most of them locally and on "that place". Would love to expand and sell through pet shops throughout the country, especially pet shops that really like birds Other than the Bird Barn (obviously), who do you think I should be hitting up? (since I can't afford to go on a road trip checking out all the pet shops in NZ, fun as that would be!)
  6. Hi all and especially Alanmin I have 5 baby chinese fbn larvae, they are only about 3cms long, and I have noticed one is a different colour from the others. Perfectly healthy and all as far as I can tell, but 4 are black and one is a mottled brown (kind of like a "black" axolotl, if not lighter). I doubt I can get a pic. Is it usual for chinese fbns to vary in colour?
  7. is it me or do insurance companies have a way of weaselling out of most claims that they can't recover from another party?
  8. I fink #1 is some kind of goby or "blennoid" as this website calls them http://www.sbs.auckland.ac.nz/uoa/science/about/departments/sbs/research/ecolevol/clements-kendall/nz-triplefin-fishes/nz-triplefin-fishes_home.cfm of the triplefin family. They are uber-common in NZ waters, that's a particularly cute one! have a look on http://www.fishbase.org/search.php too, you can narrow things down by making it NZ waters only and by making it reef-associated
  9. sometimes they lay an egg with no yolk in it, that is really small. also, young pullets often lay wee little eggs when they are starting out
  10. very pretty livingart, don't let the cats near those ones
  11. has anyone seen any whistler taddies in the Wellington/Hutt area? my lfs were sold some that they were told were whistler but they are clearly bells
  12. since that's quite a small tank we need to know how many of each type of fish are in there already so you don't overstock it
  13. orpingtons are the best I have some more hatching right now
  14. can you post a pic or describe it better? like, how big is the lump, what shape is it, is it fuzzy, are there any other lumps? there are lots of white clump bugs out there, it's difficult to guess what yours is at this level of detail
  15. condolences, she was so pretty thoughts are with you

also would like to know the source, hard to get in this part of the country in my experience
  17. maybe you could put something around the eggs to keep the parents off them? Some netting or something?
  18. I think the frogs will kill them. Each time a trap is set off, that part of the plant dies and is digested (sort of) by the plant. If you do too many at once the plant dies. I used to work at a garden centre and for that reason we had to keep the kids from poking them. I would think frogs crashing into them would finish them off quite fast
  19. you could always get cheap guppies or platys or mollies off someone on trademe, or go to the lfs and buy the biggest pregnantest females you can find and feed their bubbas if you're serious then breed a tank of not-too-fancy livebearers as feeders
  20. Arithmetic by Brooke Fraser - last verse is perfect for a wedding imho "Arithmetic" I've been staring at the sky tonight Marvelling and passing time Wondering what to do with daylight Until I can make you mine You are the one I want, you are the one I want I've been thinking of changing my mind It never stays the same for long But of all the things I know for sure You're the only certain one You are the one I want, you are the one I want I've been counting up all my wrongs One sorry for each star See I'd apologise my way to you If the heavens stretched that far You are the one I want, you are the one I want [Chorus] I won't find what I am looking for If I only "see" by keeping score 'Cos I know now you are so much more than arithmetic 'Cos if I add, if I subtract If I give it all, try to take some back I've forgotten the freedom that comes from the fact That you are the sum So you are the one I want When the years are showing on my face And my strongest days are gone When my heart and flesh depart this place From a life that sung your song You'll still be the one I want You'll still be the one I want You'll still be the one I want You'll still be the one I want
  21. in the Wellington region the pick is Animalz in Petone
