  1. thanks for that i was searching everywhere
  2. Curious if you can get these in NZ if so where, or if not could they be imported as i think they're cute
  3. ive kept one theyre awesome but require a special diet as they dnt really take flake cant remember what but anyways your not interested in one now lol
  4. haha well my arguement was that small crayfish and im talking shrimp sized lol would pose no risk at all... i think crayfish would eat snails and borneo's though which means i couldnt have them because i need some sort of algae eater in there and i like snails anyways haha. so maybe i will trial and error it. see who works with who and report back.
  5. don't put big ones in a planted tank or with fish, they're quite grumpy when they get big and love gardening.
  6. Hey guys! A few quick questions I have to clear up a debate me and my friend are having... Do crayfish eat snails? Do borneo suckers/hillstream loaches eat snails? Do crayfish eat borneo suckers? Cheers! :bounce:
  7. cute lil tank well done :bounce:
  8. maybe if the minnows died the goldfish ate them. im pretty sure they only have annual life cycles? maybe 2 years?? so they dont last very long naturally.
  9. ohhh thats great news Stella! Your fish will be much happier now
  10. agreed. I think most people have known the truth for many years. Infact it would have been a more interesting story if someone had tried to PROVE that goldfish only had 3 second memories!
  11. The thing I find with books from the library and bookstores etc is a lot of them aren't written in New Zealand and a lot of the fish species in them you cannot even get here! The water is different here, the temperatures are different, Which can be confusing for newbies. I agree also that most books contradict themselves with others. Just like the forums. But you cannot 'probe' the book for more information or ask the book to detail something a little more if you don't understand. What works for one person - many not work with someone else. I'm particularly fond of native fish (which apart from a few members on here) there are absolutely NO resources out there for keeping them. Personally I think its great to have a wide range of opinions!!
  12. weeeeeeeee sounds like fun :bounce: abit busy atm though will def keep that in mind tho thanks Stella
  13. ....... cucumber smell?? did u read that? lol how bizzare
  14. Thats why you use those cheap plastic bait catchers and traps. I've caught them using a bread bag! They're not the sharpest fish in the lake
  15. They're also in north america but I don't think they're in the same family. The australian ones are from memory. We have two kinds here but I don't have the foggiest how to tell them apart I knew they sensitive to pollution etc but didn't know they stressed so easy! So thanks for that will keep that in mind when i capture some! I'm hoping you can find them in McLaren's Lake in Tauranga. I've only ever seen them in Lake Taupo when i was snorkling about.
  16. Smelt is a small silvery fish found in most lakes and waterways throughout NZ and Australia for those who don't know Now I'm just curious has anyone attempted to keep them in aquariums and how do they fair?? And what species are they compatable with as they are quite easy to catch :bounce:
  17. BN females are ohk... The males with all the bristles don't appeal to me i really like the borneo suckers but I wont have any current in my tank so they probably won't like it a great deal...
  18. thanks jn I watched a video of borneo suckers on youtube. kinda cute wee things that look like a vacuum cleaner :bounce: . i don't really like BN... they're kinda weird looking to me i was watching one in the doctor surgery's fish tank today. :-?
  19. Good question to ask Stella. I kept koura with my goldfish growing up, the smaller the koura the better though. Large ones like gardening and sometimes can be a danger to goldfish. All native fish i think could be kept with them without dramas.
  20. Just so we are clear.. This entire thred I have been talking about an indoor tank and not a pond! And yes I heat my house in winter
  21. What temperatures is your goldfish tank? The weather doesn't get super cold in Tauranga so they may work. Do they eat snails?
  22. I did some research and turns out they are the algae eaters he was talking about. And it says they're aggressive when they're larger towards fish of their same species or fish that resemble their own species. Anyway I really don't these with my goldfish.
  23. thats really funny how pet shops market things to try and make money when they're the same species just acclimatised to colder water as we all know you can't get coldwater BN in NZ. maybe not even anywhere in the world? think theyre all tropical.
  24. Hey guys. Just curious, A guy from WetPets in Palmy told me there was an algae eater that does fine in cold water with goldfish. its not BN... it was a small silvery looking one. He wasn't particularly fond of it though. But anyway was curious if anyone knows which one he was talking about because I can't seem to remember.... Thanks!
  25. lol eat them jokes. haha well you could I suppose but I'm allergic to them anyways just give them away would be a good idea. personally i wouldn't pay for them when almost every creek in NZ has them for free
