    Mystery critters

That's funny, I threw one that was maybe 2 inches long into a tank with about 2 dozen tetras and a puffer and he was eaten in about 10 seconds.

    fire coral

Donations to buy Chimera a stick to play in his tank with?
  3. How to screw the bulkhead on is easy, you just have the box open at the top and running all the way to the surface. Drill the hole, reach down and screw the bulkhead in.
  4. I suppose you could try and make something, just a perspex box or something with some rubber seals to get a better seal, clamp it tight or something. I've read about someone doing that on RC, the problem he had was it worked great until the box floated up to the surface where it obviously wasn't blocking the hole anymore.

    PJ2000 vs PJ5000/UP6

The durso as it is handles the flow fine, it's just an inch or so higher water level. And anyway with the normal water level an inch lower, the pump will definitely suck the pump chamber dry before overflowing. I think even with it higher it still won't overflow before running out of water, it'll just be close. I will double check though.
  6. Having most of the piping be 1" and squeezed down to 3/4" at one point is going to be better than 3/4" all the way, but it's not going to be much of a difference. Like you'd be losing 35% flow instead of losing 40%. I say if you're getting better flow for less power and less complexity, go for it, even if you're not getting its max capacity.

    PJ2000 vs PJ5000/UP6

Realized yesterday that when if I plug the air holes on durso standpipe just right the water level in the overflow drops because it has a partial siphon increasing the flow. So THAT's what everyone meant about adjusting the airflow on them. So I put some tape completely over one hole and partially over another. Had to leave for work before I had a chance to turn off the bypass and see if it will handle the whole pump's capacity. So, if it can handle the whole flow of the pump then the tank should have about 30X turnover. Just need a sea swirl I think to distribute the return from the sump and...Auugh, Stupid expensive demanding tank, quit making me spend money on you!
  8. Chimera, you suck at math! Just kidding. A 40% decrease from 227LPM would be 136LPM(60% of 227)

    Miracle Mud

Which then gets washed right back into the water at the next high tide or next time it rains.

    PJ2000 vs PJ5000/UP6

It's a water pump, made by Laguna. 6000ish liters per hour.
  11. I bought a PJ5000 today, was going to grab the UP6 off Dogmatix but since it's the same as a PJ5000 I can get one from a garden center for the same price(I got conexions!) Anyway, swapped it with the PJ2000 and plugged it in. First thing one of the jets from my DIY spraybar shot a stream of water from the middle of the tank about 2 feet out of the tank. Unplugged it, fixed that. Plugged it back in and nervously watch the water level keep going up...And up...And empty the pump section of the sump. Add more water keep adding water and more water and more water and it all finally stabilizes about 5mm from the top of the overflow and touching the braces. Luckily it has a bypass valve thing that came with the pump, throw that in, a little adjusting so part of the flow is being bypassed back into the pump suction(Probably plumb that up for flow in the refugium eventually) and it's all perfect, About an inch from the top of the overflow. I'd guess that's another 6-7X turnover in the tank, another 2000LPH or so.

    Feeding Fish

About every other day. I say about because half the time I can't remember if I'd fed them the day before.
  13. That'd be awesome if it was the corals spawning.

    hiding places

Most cichlids don't hide all the time, unless they're really unhappy. And having good hiding places tends to make them happy. I wish I had more hiding places in my tank, but it's not easy to make a cave to fit a fish that's 9" long and 4" tall. Maybe I just need more rocks...
  16. Hey, Dogmatix, what are the dimensions and any other info of that UP6 pump?
  17. One advantage of leaving it in the tank noone ever mentions, at least mine has become a mini refugium full of pods in the bristles.
  18. Yup, the stars are our post rating.

    Small bubbles ?

I kinda like the look of a few small bubbles drifting around the tank.
  20. Just bring a chilly bin and throw the bags in the chilly bin, they'll be fine.
  21. New World here, well, the one in wellington anyway, has some nori. None of my fish do more than nibble on it though.
  22. Ooh, that looks like fun..."Here kitty kitty kitty....";)
  23. They're bad for both fish and birds. Maybe if you had the sprayer in a room that's shut off from the fish and brids it'd be ok. You're better off getting something like a bug zapper or a dozen venus flytraps. Oh, and keep the birds safely locked away if you're cooking with teflon coated stuff. What kind of birds do you have?

    Ghost Shrimp

I don't think they're a legal import. But, you can catch some in streams yourself if you want. I've never been able to find any, but I've probably been looking in the wrong place. Now, if you're thinking about the dozen varieties of uber algae eater shrimp you can get in the US...Not gonna happen.
