I kinda wish I'd made my sump smaller. Then I could put some shelves under there and have some storage space. As it is I have like an inch on each side and if I want to change the sump, no way I'm getting it out. Everything for the tank is sitting on a shelf NEXT to the tank. Looks extremely messy.
If you boil it and check the PH, which almost definitely would be pretty low, then it should be perfectly fine for using. Only concern is if there's agricultural or industrial runoff into it, but if it's used for the town's water that's pretty unlikely. I'd say go for it. Even use more than just a single liter if you wanted.
I don't think dunking them straight into icewater would be more effective, probably about the same. But it would be more of a shock to them, they DO seem to notice the cold water. If it's a big fish I usually put them in a container of cool tapwater and then into the freezer. A small one I usually use a cup of tankwater. I kinda think the least I could do for them is to not shock them putting them into freezing water.
Might as well use some water from the old tank, though it doesn't really have any bacteria in it. Better off transferring a bunch of the substrate over if they're going to be the same, otherwise if they've got cannister filters or you can move some of or most of the media to the new tank then you'll be able to stock it fully almost straight away.
Looks like 1300lph 12V bilge pumps are around 2 amps. That would be WELL within the capacity of the cigarette lighter. A 4750lph is about 5 amps. I think my car's cigarette lighter is on a 10 amp fuse.
My tank's actually at 1.026. Yeah, I do dilute it a bit, Mostly by just not filling it quite as much as I took out during the water changes. But I don't worry too much if each water change it shifts a tiny bit.
When I've tested the water when I collect it it usually comes up as 1.028 and my refractometer is supposed to be ATC. Maybe I'm not giving it time to compensate, I dunno how the ATC mechanism works. But, mostly I just worry about keeping my tank's salinity stable.
I haven't fed mine dogroll, but my cichlids get fed practically everything else occasionally. Just as more of a treat. Chicken, mince, steak, carrots, peas, lettuce, brocolli, pasta, various bugs...
I was thinking that too, Caryl. The Y ones have a different body shape and different number and shape of stripes. May be something like a regional variation or individual variation, but I'm definitely suspicious that they're a different species.
Hmmm, We could get Cees to put something as a stick and then everyone just edits a post basically saying, "Here's what I have to frag" Then instead of posting another one if that changes just edit the previous one. Keep it more straightforward.
Wierd, that's backwards from how most do it. Most I've seen have the filter material on the outside of the pipe with the water being sucked through the sponge into the pipe then drawn upwards and out by the water. Does that actually flow much water? It looks like the air going through the filter material would just stop everything from working. Though...I guess it does kinda make it into a mini wet dry filter if the water is moving.
