  1. It doesn't. It just eliminates the reliance on the volume of evaporated water for kalk dosage. You wouldn't totally get rid of the topoff, that would be stupid. You'd just run the kalk as a seperate system.

Ok then, here are the ones I can't find an exact species, or as exact as can be expected, so if anyone can give me a species on these... flat roundish leather Some kinda finger leather Some kinda finger leather Some kinda finger leather Sold to me as a "Euphyllia coral" has some nice hints of purple in it, btw. Sold to me as "Octopus coral" Some kinda zooanthid. oops, fixed them.

None of what I have is on Reef's list. Can't take a picture of something I don't have.
  4. I've been wondering, if you have a kalk stirrer, why not instead of filling the stirrer with fresh water why not fill it from the tank? Then evaporation would be irrelevant.

Unfortunate side effect of having...what? 5% of the people with marine/reef tanks even knowing about it? Even if every single person that knew about it took pics and submitted every single thing they could the majority of what's allowed would be missed out. Either way we're screwed, imo. I admit, I haven't done any of my marine livestock because I don't think I have anything that's uncommon. I have done my cichlids that I could get pics of though.
  6. I have a 25L container for the topoff, gizzygirl topping off the tank run by a float valve in the pump section of the sump. When the topoff runs out I have maybe 6 hours before the water level in the pump section(the only part where the water level varies) drops enough to start putting bubbles into the tank. So, every 3-4 days isn't going to work. Actually, 3-4 days the pump would run dry. I think I'd have about...Hmmm, 1 and a half days before the pump runs dry. I based the sizing of the pump section on the evaporation of my previous tank which didn't have metal halides or an open top, sized it so I should hopefully have about 5 days before it runs dry...
  7. OK, I'll offer a 6 pack. A whole bottle of bourbon if you provide the idea, parts and labor.
  8. Ooh, free frag? I'm in! Heh...Except I'm not sure I want any of that SPS rubbish infesting my lovely LPS and softy tank. 8)

    Silly idea?

Probably better off DIYing a kalk stirrer instead.

Or you could also do away with the timer. 6 of them are only going to be about a quarter watt. An extra 12 hours a day will make it .003 kw/hrs per day at about $.18 per kw/hr means it's going to cost you an extra 0.00054 cents per day or $.20 per year. So, if you get a really cheap timer, about $10, that'll take 50 years for the savings in electricity to pay for the timer. Of course, you'll burn through the LED's life twice as fast doing that but most of them have a life span of 100,000 hours or so before the brightness drops to half. So you'll use that up in 11.5 years instead of 23 years. Conclusion? Don't bother with a timer. Obviously more leds=shorter time to pay for itself but still well within the "Not worth the trouble" range.
  11. Nope, no room under the tank, it's completely taken up by the sump. That's a window outside those curtains. I've thought about putting a barrel out there, but then I don't have a good way of getting a hose back into the tank. What I'm thinking of doing is I'll replace that shelf with a big cabinet and I can put a couple water containers in there.
  12. If you can figure out how I can fit a 200L barrel right here AND make it wifey friendly, I'll buy you a beer.
  13. Good job, Pies, you just took away his closure.
  14. Except it means I have to refill my topoff every second-third day when the lids are off and all the windows in my house get covered in condensation.
  15. *Crosses boxfish off fish wish list*
  16. That's about the only thing peas are good for. Bleah. :-?
  17. I don't know how much feeling they have in that tumor, so don't know how much it would hurt them. But, it's for their own good and I'm not sure they're really advanced enough to feel much pain anyway so...I'd say it all evens out. Is it crueler to have the fish be blind because of the deformities that have been bred into it or to have it hurt a little bit every once in a while?

Hmmm, I don't have any chickens...How about $5+ NOT sending you a birman that likes to bite toes?

These are the ones I have If more people want some I'll try prying off some more. I only managed to get a small clump of a couple polyps off last time, but I'll try again if others want some.
  21. Yeah, just plonk it onto the bottom. Who cares if it scratches the glass? you don't look through the bottom of the tank!
  22. Putting a patch on it may work ok. But, given the size and obvious difficulty of dismantling the tank if it doesn't work with a tank that size I'm going to say just save for a week or two if you need to and get the glass place to replace the whole bottom.

Ok, now who is going to organize the Wellington frag swap? I volunteer Suphew to have it at his place because I haven't seen his tank. Actually, I was just fragging a couple of my leathers and some zooanthids, was thinking of sending them up to Misnoma if anyone from Wellington is headed up that way anytime soon?
  24. If it's that big I doubt a single oscar will even make a dent in their populations. Maybe dozen full grown ones would, but I think still they'd breed too fast to be wiped out.
  25. There's also the option of removing everything you want and draining/poisoning the pond. I think that'll probably be a lot more effective than an oscar.
